My first FL Romans (1 Viewer)

Thanks also to Gebhard for the photos and info on the "Kalkriese" area and the museum.
I was born in Bramsche, which is a town only a few miles from the battlefield, but we moved on when I was only 1 year old. Although we returned several times to the area for visits I was never aware of the historical events that took place there.
Next time I go back to Germany I will sure pay a visit to the place and the museum.

I got my first FL Roman the other day and would like to add some closeups of this great figure, the mounted Legate.

Konrad

Hallo Konrad,
My pleasure .. I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures the visit to the site was one I will never forget . I had been to the Hermannsdenkmal in Detmold many years ago so when i read about the new site I just had to go . When you get back there you will love it , I'm sure of that . Hard to believe you were born so close what a coincidence , also a great figure you have bought . I don't have that one but plan on adding it hopefully this year . Regards Gebhard

Well, my order came in last night- picked up ROM 02, 05 and 08 along with the Wounded roman vignette.

<<<<Cue sappy background piano music.....now {sm4}{sm4}>>>>>>>

And suffice to say that the FL Wounded Roman Rescue vignette is easily my most favorite piece in my collection. Why? Well, my dad bought it for me from George and it got me to thinking. The more I look at this piece it really reminds me of when I was a soldier- my dad was as well. In fact, he was my recruiter (still haven't paid him back for that mishap!! {sm4}). Whenever I look at this set, it reminds me of so many times in my life when dad was there to yank me out of some kind of trouble, scrap, etc I had gotten myself into. I felt it was really fitting for him to get me that set.

And, it really is historically accurate to look at it from the angle that this could very well be a seasoned veteran of the legion who has seen his son go down and runs to his aid. Very powerful piece when any collector looks at it and appreciates the desperation and comeraderie of the scene it attempts to portray.

STANDS ALONE!!

Congrats on the pick-up Chris. I am hoping that my Roman wounded vignette set will arrive today . . . . if it doesn't I'll have to wait till Monday's UPS delivery :(

My Roman reinforcements arrived this afternoon . . . . All 7 figures/sets are very very nice . . . . its really hard for me to decide which one I like the best . . . . I think its a toss up between ROM12 "Optio" and ROM018 "Wounded 2-figure Vignette". The Optio is fantastic looking and I really like the uniqueness of his shield and his chain mail . . . . makes him stand apart from the regular legionnaires as an Optio should. The 2-figure vignette of the wounded legionnaire being protected by a comrad is also a unique set that certainly adds a dynamic action pose to any scenarion it is used in. The Aquilifer (Eagle Standard) is also a great sculpt and very well done. All in all, I think the Optio is my favorite . . . .

Fantastic Chris! Congrats! Love your description of the feelings this wonderful vignette evokes. I would like to pick up this one as well, but I'm trying to stay disciplined and not tap into funds I have saved up for the Westcoaster. Maybe I'll see this set there.

A few close-ups . . . .

Incredible pics Mike! Congrats on the stellar acquisitions! I can see your Legion is hunting for Germans....they heard that some Germanic tribesman might be residing in that very neck of the woods...

The Germans can't get here soon enough. Once they are released Ill get them all but unfortunately for them they will be gravely out numbered since Ill be ordering some doubles of the Romans ^&grin Im sure joesgis will take the opposite point of view^&grin

Hey, that's not a fair fight Joe! Just kiddin'

I'm itchin' to pre-order the Germanic warriors as well....I've got my sites set on three or four (or five ) straight away, and then I will chip away.

Best, Joe

Another great batch of photos Mike sharing your Romans with us.

Great pickups Mike. The Optio is indeed one of the best figures in this range. Its such a unique piece that it is simply a must have for anyone collecting FL Romans. That diorama is simply amazing. I love the misty woodline. Can you imagine holding your ranks and knowing that there is a enemy awaiting you beyond the mist. That had to be a very nerve racking experience to hear the enemy coming but not being able to see them.

Mike,
Just an outstanding shot.It is now my background on my computer.

Great shot of the Romans Mike ......I'll have 5 shortly with more to come in March .....we should all get together and have a whole Roman army ........^&grin^&grin

Thank you one and all; Joe (joesgis), Joe (The LT), Joe (Sahara), Dan, Mark, and 10th LA.

Can't wait to be able to add some Barbarians into the fray . . . that will certainly add interesting highlights to the photos . . . . Anxiously awaiting their release and hoping it will be in the April-May time frame . . . .

Coupled with their superstitous beliefs and in the gloom of the forest, I would imagine that their angst was at max. I would imagine it took all the skills an Optio had to maintain discipline in the ranks.

I'm all for that . . . between all of us we might be able to create at least a full Centuria.

I would be as well though I think we might be plagued with the same type of problem with most armies- too many chiefs (legates, tribunes, centurions, optios) and not enough indians!! {sm4}{sm4}

As much as I love both CS and FL's Roman offerings, both companies have yet to really wow me with how well they rank up with the legionaires. CS nearly had it with their first offerings they had a 2 man running set (which is why I believe that set sold out so quickly). It seems like both companies legionaires have gaps in their formations/ shield walls when you try to rank them up- that would never do. I do look forward to both companies working to improve on this.

For me the poses of the Legionnaires work in a "melee" type scenario where they are heavily engaged with germania or celtic warriors. This is one of the reasons why I want to create an Orb (Orbus) defensive scenario which I have mentioned in previous posts . . . . The current poses would work well for that. I would agree that it would be nice to be able to create a cohesive "shield wall" that would display the military discipline that the Romans excelled at. As an example, Conte has a new Roman 3-figure set that creates a nice looking shield wall and has each Legionnaire advanicing with gladius in hand. I would readily collect figures such as these if offered by FL. In any regard, I think the currently offered FL Romans are incredibly done and I am very glad I decided to collect them. Wouldn't a "Turtle" formation be cool ^&cool . . . .

Your intial grouping of Romans is looking good Mike. Of course, I have a feeling you might well end up with a full century on your own....^&grin
