My Leuthen collection - it's starting to come together......... (1 Viewer)

Received My two turrets and two of the four walls I ordered yesterday. ( Thank you James and Adam! ) They certainly are wonderful pieces. After looking at the various images available of the Church, I think I will probably go with the Gate side of the walls as : Corner turret - Gateway - wall - wall - wall - wall - Corner turret. Only an appx. estimation but close enough for me in this scale.

I would really love to do the whole Churchyard, but don't have the space! I would guess you would be looking at around 5ft x 3ft ( ish ) and that's without the ground around it in which to place the attacking Prussians!

Hoping the two Grenadiers attacking the door will be in the May releases.............Cheers, Roy.

That is a impressive set up! I want it now :)

I have not had a chance to see these in person, are those crates next to the wall removable?

Love your set up. I think it looks great now, and really looking forward to seeing it evolve as the releases come.

Hi Matthew, no the crates aren't removable. It would have been good to have them seperate but I guess this would have added to the production cost.

I will be doing ( or trying! ) to do a proper base for my dio plus a backdrop. Now I have most of the pieces to hand I can plan everything out.

Cheers, Roy.

Had a bit of time this afternoon................ decided this is the way my dio will go:

Table is 2ft 6ins wide x 5ft long. The Gateway walls are : 3ft 8ins long x 7 1/2 ins deep. ( I have added card to represent the awaited wall sections. )

I'll attempt later on to create a scenic base and backdrop of the Church / trees.

Nice to see that the Prussian troops have secured their objective. :)

I think it is going to look really nice when complete. The fun is that it might take a few years for all of the figures to come out, but it will be a set up to talk about.

Say, I like the hangar display you have. That turned out well. I like the white shelves. I think they help to brighten up the displays a bit.

I have a problem with this initially very nice set......John Jenkins could have come with a better solution for were the Granadiers were stand and fire over the walls.....The crates used are 20 century stuff.....nothing close to them existed in the 1700s how wrong can they be......means neither of us can dislpay or take pictures of the ways and its defenders from the inside under the risk of exposing this historical blunder......
Very up set.....will not have then under poor historical research......

Well, this should start a good discussion - everyone welcome! Here's my take on it ;-)

I've read a few books on the Leuthen battle and dug around on the web, looked at pics etc. I 've come to the conclusion that the artists that have portrayed the Churchyard fight have used an awful lot of "Artistic Licence".

The actual walls and gate were built as an architectural "Folly" - not an actual fortification. There is mention of loopholes being made in the walls by the defenders and I have seen a recent ( ish ) pic of the inside of one of the turrets.
This seems to show it was just a curved part of the wall - no floor at a higher level. The pics of mass ranks of soldiers standing behind one another at the walls......... I can't see it happened like that!

Obviously we'll never quite know exactly what was done etc. But for me, that's why I'm setting my dio up to feature the outside of the walls. I don't have a problem at all with the Cases ( I 'm not so sure there were not any
around then.... ) I think John just needed a way of giving the defenders access to the walls and that was his take on it.

Any other thoughts anyone?

Cheers! Roy.

Hi Matthew, Thanks! Well three of The Prussians got there....;-) It's going to take me quite some time to get it as I want it but at least I have a plan now.

I sourced the White units ( with help from my wife! ) from IKEA. They are a little deeper than the usual size ( Especially fine for the WW1 Hangers ) They seem to make
subjects stand out a little more. I hope to get around to doing mini dio on the shelves eventually. Not had my stuff in here long, it's a new garden room. ( says my wife.....
it's a man cave really.......) It's the first time I've been able to lay my stuff out as I want it.

Cheers, Roy.

Roy, garden room or man cave, it is a nice room for showing off your collection.

I did white selves myself when I got my room. I do a lot of historical war gaming so my room has a large table in the middle. I needed a lot of shelves but did not want to take up floor space. When the room was being built, I had them make the shelves between the wall studs.

We are actually having a game this weekend with my Jenkins FIW sets. I'll take a few photos and post them.

That sounds a mighty fine room - and table Matthew. I look forward to seeing your photos.

These are the "reverse" views from inside the church walls and turrets ... It's not going to matter if the defenders have "snow white" bases or not. Some may choose to paint the top of the cases and turret floors white.

Something to think about ...

PS .. Sorry, pls refer to pics as per Bill's post # 66 below.

Possibly a less permanent alternative to painting the case tops and turret floors would be a layer of Woodland Scenics Soft Flake Snow SN140. Looks very effective.
It will be interesting to see what colour bases for the defenders John will actually go for production wise. ( Possibly he may decide not to use the " Flock " base? ) I'm happy either way. The main view of them will be from waist up after all.

Hi again, just back from Holiday and thought I'd post a little update.

Picked up my awaited final piece of wall from the London Show - ( many thanks yet again James and Adam! ) I bought a Mitre box and saw to cut the required pieces. Well worth the money!

Once measured and locked into the mitre box they cut perfectly true. In fact I can put the three pieces together to make the wall section whole again.

I used one piece to finish off the side of a turret, 1 piece I added in between the Gateway and the left hand turret ( looking at available contemporary photos it did look like the wall between the
left hand turret and the gatehouse was actually a little longer). This left a small piece over, so I decided to add it into the long length of wall.

I have also put the first polystyrene layer of the base onto my table.

I'm working on two more figure conversions and have taken a few pics to give a better idea of what I do with them. ( will post the work in progress pics on them sometime tomorrow. )

Some pics:

The only problem I have with these walls, is that the boxes that are being added by the manufacturer as a base for the soldiers, is totally historically wrong!!! These are 20th century type of crates.....with all the funds dedicated to these sets they could have added some stone type stepping walls or firing platforms....well.....what to do!!!!!
