N.f.l. 2010 season (1 Viewer)

Several teams have looked rusty coming off the bye week. The Jets need to avoid the turnovers and make the Pats beat them in the second half.

Congrats to the Jets, they played great defense, got the turnovers they needed, ran the ball when they had to and Sanchez managed the game well.

Not sure what the Patriots were doing with the fake punt down 7-3, what a boneheaded call that was. Also on that last drive, they acted like THEY were the ones up by two scores, running the ball there made no sense.

14-2, best record in football and the #1 seed gone in the blink of an eye, what a punch in the gut.

Had a bad feeling about this game all week and sadly, my fears came true.

That BB/Brady mojo is gone, 0-2 in their last two home playoff games, 0-3 in their last three playoff games overall..................

Wow...Cromartie talking trash and calling names...Ryan promising to be the better coach today...New England with home field advantage...New York coming off as 45-3 thrashing barely a month ago...Brady scrambling around the pocket all day and sacked 5 times with one of his worst passing ratings of the year......who'd a thunk it...

Something of a surprise (at least it is to me) here at the half with the Jets ahead. Pats haven't looked good. Still 30 minutes to turn it around (witness the Ravens game:eek:) for NE. Jets have looked good except for the missed FG. -- Al
Well, this is a shocker to me. Never expected the Jets to hold on but the Pats never really made a charge. That 7:45 minute drive in the 4th quarter, without scoring, killed the Pats ( and that disaster of an on-side kick didn't help). Now I am left with the real possibility of a Packers vs Jets SB. I guess I will watch, out of habit, but I will have no interest. Least of two evils, if such a SB occurs, root for the Jets. I have hated the Packers a lot longer than the Jets. Chicago vs Pittsburgh will take some thought.:D -- Al

All right, its official. I don't know squat about football. The next time I am 100% sure a team will lose, I am finding a bookie and laying $1000 on that team. First the 7-9 Seahawks beat the defending champion 13-3 Saints, then the Jets, who lost on this field 45-3 only 6 weeks ago, win 28-21, and frankly, it wasn't that close. Where did the Jets find that pass rush? And they did it without blitzing? How did they cover those inside receivers?

You know what, I am going to reserve decision until the season is over, but if the Jets go out and win a Superbowl for Rex Ryan, I am going to admit that I was flat out wrong about Ryan. I thought he was just a windbag, but anybody who finds a way to scheme defense to beat Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in back to back weeks, holding them both down (16 and 21 points) is a lot more than a big mouth. I hate to say it, because I detest trash talk, but if he wins it all this season, he jumps right to the front of the line as the best head coach of a New York NFL team in my lifetime. Parcells, who was my number one, had Bill Belicheck, Lawrence Taylor, Harry Carson, Pepper Johnson, Carl Banks, Joe Morris, Otis Anderson and Phil Simms. With the excpetion of Revis (I don't count Tomlinson, who is at the very end of his career), I don't think the Jets have a single player of this caliber.

Good luck to the Jets. After making good on the enormous check that Rex Ryan wrote for them this week, the Jets players deserve it. I still can't respect Cromartie's big mouth, though. How do you call Tom Brady an @sshole? The man in one of the top 2-3 quarterbacks of all time, and as he is still in his prime, if he wins another couple of superbowls, he may well be the best ever. He is also, by every account I have heard, a good guy. I heard that when a Patriots groundkeeper's dad passed away, Brady went to the funeral. That is not an @sshole. Period.

Good news, bad news for the Jets. They beat the Pats and Colts, but now get the Steelers. No way they run that table on the road. They played a mistake free game. That doesn't happen often. Law of averages says they lay an egg next week.

Doug,
I hope you are right, we owe the Jets one like I said before. I hope we can put a stop to them, Revis and Cromartie are scary, they played pretty good today. Hopefully, we shock them next week at home!

Two #6 seeds against two #2 seeds. Interesting. OK pundits, who is going to win these title games? Inquiring minds want to know. :D -- Al

I hate to disagree Louis but I think you probably know a fair amount. It is to some extent what I meant about the misleading nature of the season records. If the Patriots and Jets played 4 times I have little doubt the Patriots would win 3 and the 4th could go either way. If they play once, it could also go either way. They are the better team but the better team can always lose. That is why they play the games and don't just award the trophies based on the statistics and odds. No doubt, the Jets played the better game today and deserved the win. Let's see what happens next.;):D

I'm with Louis, I totally give up trying to figure out the NFL.

The Patriots are 16-0 at home the last two regular seasons, yet 0-2 in the playoffs. Last year was not a shocker, they were also 2-6 on the road and IMO, just not a very good team.

This year was different; 14-2, they didn't just beat teams, they demolished them. They beat the Jets, Colts, Steelers, Ravens, Packers and Bears, all playoff teams and beat most of them handily.

Today, they laid a gigantic egg. Give the Jets credit, they came up with all sorts of schemes to confuse Brady and put all kinds of pressure on him.

Like I said in this thread earlier, if the Jets got turnovers and ran the ball with success, they'd have a shot, they did both and they won the game.

And Louis is also right; as much of an overstuffed gasbag as Ryan is, he can coach, they were the better team today and he outcoached a guy who is a guaranteed HOF coach. That is the least prepared Patriots playoff team I can ever remember under Belichick, they were plain awful today.

I guess the Jets are the new model to follow; have a coach and players who talk trash, use profanity towards their opponents, threaten the careers of players and go out and back it up. What a wonderful concept.

Two years in a row they are in the AFCCG, I wouldn't bet against them, if they pressure Big Ben next week like they did Brady today, they'll demolish the Steelers too, plus the Steelers track record in home AFCCG's recently is pathetic, try 2-4.

This loss easily is the fourth worst in Patriots history, behind the Super Bowl loss to the Giants, the 2006 AFCCG loss to the Colts and the 1976 Ben Dreath roughing the passer call that gave the Raiders a last second win in the 1976 playoffs.

At this point, I could give two s@#$s about football, could care less what happens next week or in the Super Bowl.

Pitchers and catchers report in about a month.

You knew this was coming so get ready :D

Jets vs. Patriots not so much. I don't expect another 45 to 3 blowout, but the Patriots should win handily.

Hmm

Brad,

I understand that you are a Jets fan, but you would seriously rather have Rex Ryan as your head coach than Bill Bellicheck?

Yup!

My bad Brad- your argument has convined me- I changed my mind

NE 45, Jets 7

Say again. I can't hear you

Short of a miracle, the Patriots are going to blow the Jets out. I hate to say it, but same old Jets . . .

As Rex said, same old Jets. In the title game two years in a row. Yup, same old Jets.

Be careful what you wish for. Wonder who will be on Reavis Island this week.

As I leave you on this fine Monday morning, J - E - T - S!!!

Congrats to the Jets and you, Brad. You stood by your team as a fan should. Being a Baltimore Col...er...Ravens fan, I can't root for the Steelers, so I will root for the Jets, sort of (still not over SBIII:eek::D), go team! -- Al

Brad,

I admitted I was wrong long before your post. Ryan did an absolutely amazing job.

First of all, having all the linemen and linebackers chip every single receiver coming off the line of scrimage or out of the backfield to disrupt their timing was brilliant. Brady has such excellent timing with his receivers, and in the past the only way to effectively disrupt it was to hit Brady. Ryan figured out that you could also do it by jamming the receivers. That, plus refusing to blitz, rushing only 3-4, and dropping 7-8 back in coverage was the key. By rule, you have to keep at least 5 linemen plus the quarterback in, that means you can't send out more than 5. 8 to cover 5 is pretty good odds, especially when you have two top cornerbacks who can play man. That's double coverage on the slot, tightend and running back out of the backfield. With the outside rushers also chipping the slot, tight end and running backs at the line before rushing, those receivers don't know which way is up. Also, by having all those defenders playing in short zones, they were also effective against the run. To top it off, the one time they did blitz, it was Cromartie on a blind side blitz on a key third down play, he got a brutal sack to kill the drive, and they didn't go to the well again, when Brady would have been ready for it. It was one of the best defensive game plans I have every seen, down right Belicheck-esque.

I wish your Jets the best of luck next week, and hopefully in the Superbowl. But until they have won those two games, Ryan hasn't backed up his talk.

Who is going to be on Revis island next week, Brad?

Either Hines Ward, or the Steelers speedy young receiver (whose name escapes me). In my opinion (which isn't worth much in these playoffs) the Jets match up far better against the Steelers personnel wise. The Steelers lack an effective running game, and rely heavily on Roethlisberger to his two wideouts, with much of the success coming where Big Ben can break a tackle and extend a play, letting Ward break open late.

With the Jets new max-cover mentality, they should be able to contain Big Ben, keep him in the pocket (where he is least effective), cover his receivers, and make him try to force the ball in to double coverage. Big Ben gets frustrated when teams do that, and tends to make mistakes. Defensively, I expect Ryan and Jets to come to play with an effective game plan.

Offensively is another story. Nobody runs the ball effectively on the Steelers when Troy Polumalou is in the game (he was out injured when the Jets beat them in week 15). Troy is also one of the best ball hawking safeties in the league, as well as a killer on the blitz. Offensively, the Jets have to know where Polumalou is at all times, and Sanchez has to look him off and never throw to his side of the field. When he Blitzes, Sanchez has to roll the other way and throw the ball quickly, even if it means just getting outside the tackle box and throwing the ball away. For me, the whole game is in Sanchez's hands. If he plays smart, like he did yesterday, and doesn't turn the ball over, the Jets should win.

Great post Brad, good for you, the Jets move on to the AFCCG, they came out of nowhere this year, nobody and I mean nobody picked them to do anything this year, what a band of overachievers they are.

Oh and Bart Scott is just about the most classy guy wearing cleats, what an orator he is, has to be a mensa member for sure; that rant after the game will go down in history right alongside the Knute Rockne speach.

LT was sobbing after the game too, he finally got the Patriots monkey off his back, good for him, he's another class act, a true sportsman, you never, ever hear LT whining after a loss, he always takes his losses like the man he is.

Just think, if the Jets go on and win the Super Bowl, imagine how many baby boys will be named after your brilliant coach; "Fatso"..............

Ok, now I know the Steelers are guaranteed with this post....................!!!!

Seriously, it will be a good matchup. I like our chances though, we are home, we have the sting of the close loss late to the Jets (although I argued earlier I think that woke us up). And we have..............BIG BEN............winner.

Anything can happen, that is why we play the game. I don't care who Reavis covers, we have 6 legitimate receivers (Brown, Wallace, Ward, Manuel, Miller, Randle El), 3 of which are burners (go after Cromartie, if the Colts did that more........). So, I give us an even chance.

Keys to game - if our defense mimics the 3rd/4th qtr we had against the Ravens regarding pressuring the QB, that would be good. IF Troy shows up for 5 more minutes than he did against the Ravens, that will help. Need McFadden healthy on the corner.

Both teams have a shot and hopefully the Jets will revert to the true....Same Old Jets...........!!

Personally, this is the match up we want. Brady caused way too many issues for the Steelers. Take away an opening kickoff and now Troy in the game, this time around, the game should be quite different!

The key to beating the Jets is to get up early on them and avoid the turnovers, if they get up early and get a score or two off of turnovers, you are toast, just ask the Patriots.

Yesterday the Jets opened the game with a three and out, the Patriots moved the ball right down the field and then Brady threw a boneheaded INT, but the Jets did not score. The Patriots take over, march right down the field again, Crumpler drops a sure TD, they settle for a field goal and the game started to play into the Jets hands.

Couple that with the miscomunication on the fake punt that was not called, but the center thought it was, turnover, TD for the Jets, 14-3 at halftime and that was pretty much all she wrote.

The Steelers turned the ball over last week vs the Ravens, got behind and then came back because the Ravens also turned the ball over.

Then need to pressure Broadway Mark Sanchez, rattle him, get in his grill and force him into stupid throws.

Let me know how the game turns out, I'll be out antique shopping, then shoe shopping, then furniture shopping, then handbag shopping, then going to a wine tasting with my girlfriend next Sunday, then it's off to the dentist for a root canal followed by a trip to the doctors for a colonoscopy.............

Hi George. Just some advice, you might want to save the wine "tasting" until after the root canal and colonoscopy. Oh what the heck, a little before fortification can't hurt, either. Good luck. -- Al

Al, being the sports fan that you are, you'd love it up here in Boston today, sports talk radio has been off the charts today, some of the callers need to get a grip.

They don't play for the Patriots, so why all the hostility, everything from Belichick has lost it to Brady is past his prime, they need to blow up the team, blah, blah, blah.

Two comical things have come out of this; there is this dead from the neck up cementhead who calls the stations named "Joey from the North End", he's a mafia wise guy wannabe and a real snapper breaker, a Yankees/Jets fan who called today and started off his call with "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!, how about them............." at which point the host cut him off.........;)

The second thing is two sources have reported someone at the game yesterday punched the lights out of "Fireman Ed" who was at the game.........:p
