I think the question is whether he had possession. It was a bang-bang play on the drop but he did have the ball in the end zone for a moment. I'm not saying it was a catch, but I just wonder what the rule is on a TD catch:

Jeez, it was close, but I think that back foot did him in. Bang bang is certainly the description. I believe and someone else can contradict me, but the way the rule was explained for a receiver is as follows:

1. Both feet must come down in the field of play and the receiver must have full control of the ball. The end zone does'nt cover the "go to ground", but we have all seen it used on those "fade" routes= Receiver catches ball in air falling backwards, and drops the ball upon impact of another player or ground. 9 out of 10 times, they rule it incomplete.

2. For a running back, since both feet are on the ground, all they have to do is break the plain. (Same with a receiver who catches the ball prior to being in the end zone.

The Ravens lost the AFC championship game, but I think Flacco proved he is a top tier quarterback. I know that for the year, the Patriots pass defense was ranked last or second to last, but they got healthy down the stretch, and have played very well in the post season (albeit in the first game against Tebow's flawed offense). Flacco, in my opinion, outplayed Brady in this one game (I emphasize in this one game - Brady is one of the top 5 ever, he had an off day), threw for 300+ yards in an AFC Championship, drove down the field late in the 4th quarter for what should have been at least the equalizer, and hit a receiver in the hands for what should have been the winning touchdown. I don't know whether it was poor judgment on the receiver not to pull the ball into his body rather than try to turn away from coverage, or a great play by the defender (probably a combination of the two) but the ball ended up on the turf. It was clearly an incomplete pass, but just as clearly should have been caught for the TD.

The missed kick could be blamed, at least in part, on John Harbaugh. As his kicker and holder were running onto the field late, and rushed to get set up as the play clock ticked down under towards 1, I turned to my friend Mark, and said "Harbaugh has two time outs, why doesn't he use one and let his kicker get set up properly?" With only 1 second left on the playclock, they snapped the ball, and Cundiff totally shanked the kick. A miss like that was either the result of the kicker choking completely under the pressure, or of the kicker being out of his routine and having his timing all messed up. If it was the latter, then two questions need to be answered: 1. Why were the kicker and the holder running onto the field late (they left the sideline with only 13 seconds left on the playclock) and 2. why didn't Harbaugh call time out?

What ever the answer is to these questions, I feel very bad for Ravens fans, as their team beat itself. I was both right and wrong about this game. I was right that the Patriots would win, but I was wrong about my harsh judgment of the Ravens after the Texans game. The Texans must be better than I thought they were, as the Ravens certainly played well enough to win against a tremendous Patriots team.

Louis,

To answer your questions, Harbaugh had a timeout, not sure why not used especially after what came out on the radio this morning. Apparently, on the sideline, there is a board kept for the kickers so that they know down, distance and field location. Kickers have their routines for each down. Apparently in the hustle, the board was not updated and Cundiff was still on the routine for ending 2nd down, going into third down, so they lost 10 secs "finding" him. Then he rushed on the field and the rest is history.

As for Flacco, I think he is a good QB, no one can take away wins, but not sure one game puts you in top tier. He has never yet won the "big" game. IMO, til he does that, he is simply a very good QB. He also IMO doesn't help himself with the press, he never seems to say the right thing. IMO, I think the press opinion of him really affects him and he needs to shake that. The guy has skills, but he needs to become a winner, as I said earlier, "winners make their own luck" and Tom Brady is clearly that. Regardless of anything, it is extremely lucky they won, both teams played well enough to win, but in the end, the lucky one did!

I have a feeling the Ravens will be back in the mix again...........!

A few notes on the Giants-49ers Game:

The Giants won time of possession 39 minutes to 28 minutes.

The Giants ran 90 plays on offense, the 49ers 57.

The Giants passed for 316 yards, the 49ers 196, but with all the sacks (a total of 9 in the game), the net yards passing was 268 to 174.

Eli Manning was sacked 6 times and knocked down 20 times.

The Giants running backs rushed for 87 yards, the 49ers running backs rushed for 105 yards, but, adding 45 yards of scrambling by Alex Smith, the 49ers total 150 yards rushing.

The Giants were 7/21 in third down conversions, with a total of 20 first downs in the game, the 49ers were 1/13 in third down conversions, with a total of 15 first downs in the game.

Williams had a punt return of 24 yards to the 45 yard line and kick return of 40 yards to the 45 yard line, but also muffed a punt off his knee and fumbled a punt, which turned out to be the difference in an otherwise very close game.

After the game, Eli Manning was alone with 5 road playoff victories. Tom Coughlin was tied with Tom Landry with 7 road playoff victories.

Eli Manning has a total of 15 regular season and 2 post season 4th Quarter touchdown passes this season, passing Johnny Unitas for the most in one season, combining regular and post season.

Eli Manning is 7-3 in his first 10 playoff games, with 16 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, much better stats than his brother in the post season.

Well, poor George has to suffer through two weeks of replays from Superbowl 42 before his team gets to take the field and try to get revenge........

Yeah, really looking forward to being bombarded with this stuff for two weeks, the NFL network is doing their best to get my blood pressure off the charts by being kind enough to show the game in it's entirety tonight at 8:30....................just awesome, not to metion today on local radio they've mentioned the Tyree play about three or four times and were also nice enough to air the Patriots color guys call of the play........."Manning back to pass......and HE'S SACKED!!!...................no wait, he SOMEHOW escapes and heaves the ball downfield and..............it's.....................incomple.......no wait, IT'S CAUGHT. Good lord, can you believe it, how in the name of God did he escape and complete that pass."

The latest dispatches from the frontlines at the Daily Giant.

This is only the fifth time in my life that the Giants are playing for the Championship (the other 14 Championship games they played in [of which they only won 4] were before I was born) so I am going to enjoy it as much as I can.:wink2: Expect daily dispatches on the topic until Superbowl Sunday.^&grin

Oh, I'm sure the readers of this thread will be waiting with bated breath zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :rolleyes2:

Only the fifth?:rolleyes2: Oh, my dear boy you have been deprived.

Brady and the boys ALL THE WAY

Have to give you credit Bernie, you've been with the Patriots all the way this year through their ups and downs, you predicted they'd get to the Super Bowl and you were right.

Here's hoping they go to Indy and remove all doubt as to who the best team is.

I guess some of the shock has worn off from Sundays game, what can I say?? there were so many plays from both teams that could have made a BIG difference beside the dropped pass and missed field goal, but as Ray said "you win as a team, you lose as a team"...no better words can be said, lots of hurt and pain to go around for the next few weeks or so, but the Ravens are a solid team, a great core of talent that will be around for awhile, so I'm already looking forward to next year, maybe the 5th time in a row will get us over the playoff hill and into the Superbowl, as far as the Superbowl....I really could care less, sorry Lou/George...but after this heartbreak it's gonna be tough to even watch that game for me, but I 'll give my edge to the Giants, playing better defense at the right time, so my score goes Giants 34 Pats 27...come on next season:smile2:...Sammy

With the Colts' hiring of a new coach, their probable intention of not making the 28 million dollar payment due in March to Peyton Manning and the drafting of Andrew Luck on the horizon, the last time we may see a Manning play in Indy may be in two Sundays and it won't be Peyton.

Even if he is healthy there is some thought he may retire if he can't play for the Colts. Strong suitors if he can and does want to play are supposed to be Arizona and Seattle.

The name of Dandy Dan Snyder (aka, I have no clue) and the Redskins should not be left off this list. There have been local rumors...:rolleyes2: -- Al

Al,

Here's an article from the NFL web site about likely landings for Peyton, http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000...will-peyton-end-up?module=HP11_headline_stack

Here's what it said about the Skins:

"Washington's offensive line is every bit as bad as Indy's and the roster is deprived of skill players. The Redskins also have a history of turmoil and instability. And don't forget, in the NFC East, he'd be facing little brother Eli twice a year. I don't see it, and execs I talk to expect Washington to make a move for St. Louis' No. 2 overall slot in the draft, and select whichever quarterback doesn't go first overall (at this point, it looks like Griffin)."

If the Skins can get Griffin, they should grab him. He's someone they can build around and he seems like an upstanding young man.

Brad, that seems the likely scenario. Even if Snyder was seriously considering Manning, there is nothing in DC that would tempt Manning to even think about coming here. No line, receivers, or hope of winning. As for getting the #2 overall pick, the Skins don't have much to barter with beyond giving away badly needed future draft picks, which is exactly what they will do. They have a long history of trading away their future picks. If Griffin gets picked by the Skins, good for us, but I suspect that Griffin might pull a John Elway and refuse to play for the team that chose him.:rolleyes2: I have become very pessimistic about the Skins chances to win games as long as that buffoon, (ok, rich buffoon), Dandy Dan Snyder is calling the shots. -- Al

Al,

From what I've heard, if the Colts refuse or decline the option to make Manning the $28 million payment that he would be otherwise due, he would become a free agent and could go wherever he chooses.

Besides Snyder, the Jets owner has some crazy notion that he would like Manning. Leaving aside the fact that the harmony in the Jets locker room is not too good right now or that Rex would be your coach, it's not a move that makes sense for the Jets. They just hired Tony Sparano as the OC to emphasize a ground based offense. Manning would not fit in with that strategy. Secondly, Sanchez' confidence is a little shaken right now. If you bring Manning in you'll lose him completely. Lastly, they would take a big salary cap hit. The idea of having the two Mannings in NY is inviting but not logical.

Peyton seems to be the topic of the day here in NY sports radio. Apparently, Woody Johnson (he of the J & J family fortune and owner of the Jets) is enamored of Peyton and wants him, although Rex doesn't. However, apparently, the Skins owner will do anything to sign him.

For the Jets to sign him would be an awful idea on so many levels. No wonder this team is so screwed up. They had a good plan going and this would just destroy it.

If the 49ers want him as the last piece to make their team pretty much a lock for the Superbowl, I think Peyton will go there, even if it involves taking less money.

If not, the only places I see him signing are Arizona (where he would have Larry Fitzgerald to throw too, a very good young running back and a top 10 defense playing in a perinneally weak division) or Miami. He is a dome QB, and will want to either play in a dome, or in a really good weather market. That being said, I doubt he would sign in Miami because that would involve playing in the AFC East against a bunch of outdoor cold weather teams, including facing Brady and Bellichik twice a year.

I can't imagine he would sign with the Red Skins, no matter how much money they throw at him, because of the mess their owner has made with free agent signings, the dirth of skill position players and the "my way or the highway" coach.

I can't see him signing with the Jets because (1) their offensive line has real problems, and he doesn't want another neck injury, (2) Tony Sparano is the offensive coordinator, and I can't see Peyton playing in a run first system, (3) the receivers are a mess, and (4) he won't want to share the spotlight in NY with his brother.

If I were the 49ers, and had any doubt that Aex Smith was the man, if my doctors cleared him, I would grab Peyton Manning, offering him a frontloaded 2-3 year deal in the hopes that he could get that excellent defense and running game over the hump in one of the next 3 seasons. Otherwise, my money would be on the Cardinals. Miami would be a distant third, and no one else would be in the running.
