It was tough to watch college basketball this week. Kansas and Kansas State ended in a brawl and in the Illinois/Purdue game Illinois guard Alan Griffin was given a flagrant-2 foul and ejected from Wednesday's game against Purdue after intentionally stepping on Sasha Stefanovic.

Scott Van Pelt of ESPN argued that these were teachable moments and that the maximum penalties should not be imposed.

I disagree, the fact that we don't impose maximum penalties is the reason why incidents like this keep happening,

Terps are driving me nuts with their slow starts. Once again, they put themselves behind the 8-ball by falling behind Northwestern 40-26 at the half. Northwestern was 6-11 coming into the game and the Terps 14-4 but the Terps played like they didn't have a clue. They got their heads straight at halftime and outscored NW 51-26 in the second half to win 77-66 for their first Big 10 road win of 2020. They really need to solve this slow start-itis they have. It is very frustrating to watch. :rolleyes2: -- Al[/QUOT

Yup and the Terps losing to Big Ten winless Minnesota a couple of yrs ago was when I gave up watching the Terps after 40+ yrs. Chris

And Kevin McCarty Head Coach, from the 1996 UK championship team fired from Youngstown for Title IX violations, read "sexual with student."

The Kansas suspensions came out this week; 2 - 12 games for various players.

Of course brawls in hockey and baseball happen all the time without large penalties. What's the difference in bball?

This current team is driving me close to that edge, but if I didn't quit during the Bob Wade era, I'll probably weather this situation. I'll just keep tabs on the score instead of watching the whole game. Somehow less painful just checking the score every so often. How's that for self delusion?:wink2:^&grin -- Al

I thought Turgeon would make a difference at UM. But he's turning out to be another Lefty, recruits well but can't coach. Chris

This is one of those years where the field is wide open.

For example a month ago Ohio State was projected as a #1 seed in the tournament, as of today many prognosticators have them on the bubble to even make the tournament.

Add to that the number of really good teams that are not even ranked (Indiana for example) and you could have many high seeds getting knocked out early.

With all of that there is still quite a bit of basketball to be played before the tournament, and I for one kind of enjoy the "parity".

Terps showed some guts today. In a big game at Indiana, the Terps came out very sharp, started fast and built a 14 point lead before settling for a 9 point halftime lead. Then the Terps do what they always seem to do, they went to sleep and not only let Indiana back into the game, but fell behind Indiana by as many as 9 points. The Terps trailed by 6, 76-70, with 1:05 to go and looked DOA. Somehow they managed to fight back with good defense, a full court press, and ran off 7 straight points to lead 77-76 with 14 seconds to go and Indiana with the ball. In years past, I have seen UMd lose these games far too often, but this time their defense kept Indiana from getting a clean shot and the Terps survived 77-76. A gutsy comeback and win against a very good Indiana team on Indiana's home court. Congrats to the Terps on a signature win. -- Al

Indiana is a great team, especially at home. That was a huge win for Maryland and only makes their resume stronger as the tournament approaches.

Anthony Cowan can flat out shoot. He pretty much carried UMD at times during their win last night against Iowa.

It was another good win for the Terps, especially after the thrashing Iowa gave them in their first meeting. Terps need to be playing well as they are in the stretch run, with 6 of their next 11 games against ranked teams. Sure wish they could be a little more consistent. -- Al

UK loses at Auburn by 9. :redface2: Wildcats, like most teams this season, are up and down. Officiating was terrible, many "ghost" fouls, but not the cause for the loss. While most commentators are bemoaning the officiating, Jay Bilas was complaining there were not enough fouls called. :rolleyes2: I think 25 - 33% of the fouls in most games should not be called. Chris

I watched that game and what stood out most was Bilas. That guy is an idiot and about as anti-Kentucky as you can get. Never gave credit to them on a single play, no matter how great, it was always an Auburn let down that “ allowed” Kentucky to score.

If you really want some fun watch him broadcast a Duke game.

After a good week with 2 big wins, the Terps moved up 6 spots in both polls to the #9 spot. Now, how long will they stay in the Top 10? -- Al

Fun with numbers: Today's traditional rivalry game between Duke and NC has an unusual stat tied to it...over the last 100 games of this rivalry, each team has won 50 games, with the number of points scored being dead even over the 100 games. Remarkable. Tonight's game ended with Duke winning in OT, by 2 points. You can't get any more even than that. -- Al

And San Diego State moved to 24-0 last night by beating the Air Force Academy . . . Won't last go on forever, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts. 'Nough said!

Duke fans had to be in shock at how close the game was considering how bad UNC gas been this season. Chris

The real tragedy was that NC was in position to win the game in regulation and OT but let it get away both times. Deja Vu all over again as Duke tied the game at the end of regulation with a shot that was in the air as the buzzer sounded. Pulled another rabbit out of their tucus. :rolleyes2: -- Al

UK wins over Vanderbilt, who has not won a conference game since March 2018. UK down by 7 at the half. {eek3} Is that's what's meant by "playing down to the competition?" UofL looks very good this yr. Chris

Spoke too soon, UofL lost to unranked GA Tech. :rolleyes2: Chris

I am in shock to see how badly UNC is playing this season. I don't recall this kind of poor play in all the years I've followed ACC play, some 50+ years. UNC is currently 10-14, having lost 14 of their last 19 games. Ol' Dean Smith is spinning at a high rate, I fear. -- Al
