UMd escaped the upset bug, just barely. Got past Valpo 65-62. Close but it is a win and gets them to the round of 32 against WVa on Sunday. Didn't defend the 3-ball very well all day until the very last play when 5'9" senior Varun Ram, in his only appearance of the game, swatted the ball loose on the Valpo 3-point shot attempt with the Terps recovering the ball as the clock ran out. Way to save the day Mr. Ram. :salute:: -- Al

Al:

Some great games and near upsets so far. Louisville almost lost to UC irvine? That would have been a real shock.

Valpo was no push over, UMd got a solid win against a team that probably deserved a higher seed.

Terps got a win without much from Layman. He's one that has to produce to go far in the tournament. Go Terps!! Chris

Layman had a rough day but Nickens provided the missing points. The player who drove me crazy was Smotrycz, who got a lot of playing time because of Layman's foul trouble, and played well for the most part, but kept shooting and missing from outside. Like all Terp teams, this one doesn't do things the easy way. It's always got to be close. Fortunately for this team, they are adept at winning close games. :rolleyes2: -- Al

I'm 28-4 in my pool, not bad; issue is I had Iowa State and Baylor going to the sweet 16, both of whom are out.

Things are going to get interesting today and tomorrow.

I've got Kentucky, Wisconsin, Gonzaga and Oklahoma going to the final four, we'll see how that shakes out.

That's when you have to make hay: in the first round. I'm only 24-8 and I'm in 30th place {eek3}

Thanks to an epic fail by Villanova, my East bracket is now up in flames; someone needs to explain to me how the #2 ranked team in the country with a 32-2 record loses to a team with 13 losses and isn't even in the top 40?

Yeah, yeah, I know all about survive and advance and that miracle title NC State won two hundred years ago, but what a gag job.

Bad night for the Big East as 'Nova goes down and the Hoyas bite the big one. Sorry to see 'Nova go but overjoyed to see the Hoyas lose. Barring any upsets, the ACC could put 6 teams in the Sweet 16. In fact, the potential (if not the reality) exists for an all ACC Final 4. -- Al

Just like Brad said, you have to make hay with the opening round; 28-4 in the first 32 games.

So far in the second round, I'm 6-4.

Now I'm 6-5, plus Oklahoma is down 9 to the Philadelphia Flyers and I've got the Sooners in the final four.

I'm toast.

Sad ending for the Terps season as they lose to WVa 69-59. Too bad but you can't lose your leading scorer and ball handler and expect to stay in the game, especially when you turn the ball over 23 times and get slaughtered on the offensive boards. WVa had numerous 2nd/3rd chance points. They fought to the end, even with the injured Trimble on the bench, but all that killed the Terps. But, in all honesty, even if they had won, the party was going to end in the Sweet 16. No one is beating Kentucky, short of a miracle. Congrats to the Terps for a great season, exceeding all expectations, and congrats to WVa for the win. Now they get the Wildcats.:rolleyes2: -Al

Exactly Al, no team is going to win with that many turnovers. That's been a plague for the Terps for yrs, as we previously mentioned.

I had picked WV over MD to win in my bracket selections. So no surprise there, unfortunately. :rolleyes2:

Go Wildcats!!! Chris

Chris, the Terps predisposition for turnovers has driven me crazy since the days of Lefty. We've had good ball-handlers but there has always been the turnover bug. I've come to expect 12-15 turnovers as a matter of course. I've seen teams in this tourney that have had 2-3 turnovers in a whole game and I wonder what UMd might be capable of if they were more careful with the ball. The sloppiness just drives me up a wall. How many times has it cost the Terps a win? A lot more than I care to remember. -- Al

28-4 in round 1, 10-6 in round two.

All four of my final four picks are still alive, two of my elite eights are already out.

Next weekend should be interesting.

Oh for the days of the "Big H", Howard White. :wink2: Chris

Loved Howard and Jim "Bozo" O'Brien. Some of my best memories involve that team. I was sitting behind the Tarheel bench in Cole the night O'Brien threw in 38 points to beat them. In fact, I was seated right behind Mitch Kupchak who had to listen to my mouth the whole game.:wink2: It was a great time to be at UMd and watch the rise of Lefty and the program. -- Al

George, you're having better luck than I am. All my teams are now out and I am forced to root for secondary teams. Hoping for a Duke-Kentucky final to replay the outstanding rivalry of the early 90's. -- Al

Lord amighty, is WVa ever outclassed by Canetuck. UK outscored WVa 18-2 in the first 8 minutes of the game and have outscored WVa 10-1 in the first 8 minutes of the second half. Currently lead 54-19 with 11:58 to go. WVa is 5-37 from the field (1-10 from 3 pt. range). Can anyone stop the Wildcats? Doesn't look like it so far. -- Al
