The Big 10 is to college basketball what the SEC is to college football. Last night there was the aforementioned UMD v. Nebraska game which went down to the wire and there was also the Illinois v. Rutgers game that went into triple OT. I have no loyalty to any team in the conference, I just like to watch competitive college basketball and right now the Big 10 is serving up those types of games on a regular basis.
The Big 10 does have some very competitive teams and great games. They are making inroads to the ACC's claim as the best b-ball conference. -- Al

A nice double digit win for the Terps over #18 Purdue. Ice cold shooting from Trimble and Layman, but it didn't matter. Nice to see the Terps didn't let the game get away from them when they were down in second half. THey always looked confident. 12% three point shooting by the Boilermakers helped. We were hot from the FT line. GO TERPS!! Chris

Yeah, every Terp not named Carter was 0-12 from 3-point range, but defense and FT shooting saves the day. Purdue actually led 51-47 deep in the second half before the Terps took over, outscoring them 25-10 the rest of the way. Good win even if the FG shooting was cold. -- Al

Well, an interesting night as #1 and #2 both lose, leaving the door open for Nova and UMd to move up. Also Indiana lost, moving UMd 2nd place in the Big 10. Good day for the Terps.:wink2: -- Al

That game was a prime example as to what UMD can do when they work as a team, select good shots and play intense defense.

What a great weekend! Both MD and Kentucky win. :smile2: AND, I fixed two leaking faucets and painted a primer coat on the bathroom I'm remodeling. :salute:: THat after I stripped the wallpaper. Chris

Terps #2 in the latest AP poll. Still a long way to go, but I'm enjoying the moment. ^&grin GO TERPS!! Chris

A heady ranking, to be sure. I'm not used to the altitude. Excuse me, I think I'm getting the vapors...:wink2: -- Al

It is well deserved. That Purdue win was timely and convincing, two factors that always give a boost in the rankings.

For some unfathomable reason, the Terps are playing D-II Bowie State University tonight. They lead 47-29 at the half, but who scheduled this game at this point in the season? Best case scenario is the Terps win big and don't hurt their ranking. Worst case is a close win or loss that kills them in the rankings. No way this game is a plus. It does give the starters a chance to rest some, but I would have preferred to keep the momentum of the last weeks going. Just as an example of how this game is being approached by UMd, the leading scorer at the half is little used Terp forward Michel Cekovsky, with 11 points (a career high). BSU is in the Maryland university system, located a few miles from College Park in PG County and is Maryland's oldest historically black university. -- Al

Al, agree, don't know how this one wound up in the schedule. Don't remember these out of conference games this late in the season. We didn't lose anything, added to the win column. But didn't help the RPI any. Chris

I seriously thought it was a typo or a mistake when I checked the schedule yesterday. Shouldn't they have played them earlier in the season? Everyone else is in the thick of conference play.

Chris, Jason, it was apparently a scheduling flub that was supposed to be 2 exhibition games, initially. Don't know what happened but the last time UMd had a non-conference game this late in the season was in 1989. A real screw-up. -- Al

Al:

Thanks for the info, it seems even more odd when you consider UMD's current lofty ranking.

Terps looking like poop in the 1st half against the Badgers. UMd led 14-7 before being outscored 29-7 to close the half. The usual suspects, turnovers aplenty, poor shooting, and being beaten on the boards at both ends. Will end in an ugly loss if they don't get their act together in the 2nd half. -- Al

I can't understand how this team, with it's size and quickness, keeps getting beaten off the boards, seemingly every game. The lack of offensive rebounding has plagued them all year, and it's killing them in this game (plus the lack of defense to Wisconsin's 3-point shooting). Another observation; Trimble has lost complete confidence in his shooting. What a crap effort in every aspect of this game. Sheesh. -- Al

Al:

It is best to learn the lessons of rebounding now as opposed to in the tournament when loses like the one to Wisconsin equal finality.

Maryland is still one of the best 5 teams in the country. Learn and live to fight another day. The Big 10 is tough but at the very least it prepares you for a great end run and a chance at a Final Four.

On another note, Kansas v.Oklahoma was incredible, must see NCAA basketball.

And finally, Duke got lucky on that final shot versus UVA, in video and stills that was clearly a travel by Allen.

Continued poor execution finally caught up to MD. They have not played well since the first OSU game. There were 8-9 turnovers in the first half alone. Nikens should be benched. He's been in a shooting slump for a month, as mentioned a game or two ago by the commentators. Layman hit a three yesterday, first in a long time and repeatedly missed at the basket. Carter had 4 points late in the game. This was the worst I've ever seen Trimble play, and he's had some clunkers in the last couple of weeks.
I watched three forced TOs in a row by Wisc. And the Terps scored no points off of those at a time when they were down by 10-12 pts. Opportunities were there.
It's an early exit from both tournaments playing like this. Chris

Chris, Trimble's game has all but fallen off a cliff over the past several games. I wonder if he is starting to wilt from the pressure or if he is just plain tired. His shooting is actually hurting the team and even his ball handling has been suspect at times with some sloppy passing or just not protecting the ball properly. Nikens has been useless and every game it seems 1 or 2 of the starters disappears for large portions of the game. Carter, in particular, needs to be involved on every possession. He is too good to have only 4 shots and 4 points late in a game like yesterday. Turgeon needs to figure it out or it's going to be a year of wasted talent and lost possibilities. -- Al

OU vs Kansas; down two, OU gets fouled and the kid was a 90% free throw shooter...........steps to the line, hits the first one, then the stooge announcer says "Kansas has to get ready for a last shot here, he'll make this free throw, he's a 90% shooter, he never misses............................."

Second free throw, he bricks it........................ Good job you stooge announcer, OU goes on to lose, they're heading the wrong way down the stretch here, have gone from #1 to #3 to now probably #6.................@#$%ing Kansas, I still have Danny Manning Kansas nightmares from the National Championship game........................

And good for Duke; that program never catches any breaks...................................:rolleyes2:
