Congratulations to the Baylor Lady Bears on winning the Championship and finishing an unprecedented 40-0. ND gave them a run for their money, for a while. It is an impressive accomplishment. Four other women's programs have finished 39-0 but Baylor is the first team to reach 40-0. -- Al

Just glad it's not Tenn or UConn..........or DUKE! Chris

UK scores the #1 recruiting class four yrs in a row. :smile2: U of Louisville has one recruit and returns most of their team. They're picked as a title contender for next yr and look pretty solid. UK is #4 in a lot of pre season polls but I don't see it. May be losing thier top 6 players. May not be a top 10 team without any nucleous to build around.

Any news about Stoglin AL? Chris

Hi Chris. Latest news is that Stoglin is definetly staying at UMd. Turgeon is putting together a top-notch recruit class. He has gotten Shaquille Cleare of Houston, a 6-9 center; Jake Layman of Wrentham, Mass., a 6-8 forward; Seth Allen, a 6-1 shooting guard out of Fredricksburg, Va.; and just announced Charles Mitchell, a 6-8 power forward from Marietta, Ga. Sounds like Turgeon is headed in the right direction. -- Al

Thanks for the update Al. Had heard of some of the recruits and how can you not like a center with the name Shaquille? :smile2: Glad to hear about Stoglin. Think Howard has a lot of improvment to make. Was not impressed with him at point. Also think Turgeon will take the Terps in the right direction. Chris

this is kind of big news...at least for me...as I graduated from SMU...

ESPN has reported that Larry Brown of both college and NBA fame has been named as the new head coach of the SMU Mustang program...

last year...after finishing at 13-19...SMU is headed to the Big East after next season...

with over 1,600 career wins...10 NBA Division Championships...3 NCAA Final Fours...1 NBA Championship and 1 NCAA Championship...Brown is definitely a welcome addition...

with June Jones turning around the football program to a respectable 8-5 last year...then winning the Compass Bowl against Pittsburg (28-6)...I can finally show my face after the 1987 Death Penalty for their "slush fund" to players incident...

Brown is icing on the cake...

Hi Chris. Scratch the news about Stoglin staying at UMd. Story out of College Park this AM is that Stoglin has been suspended for violating the UMd student-athlete code of conduct (unspecified in this case) and that Stoglin promptly filed his name for the NBA draft. Another player, Mycal Parker was also suspended, and has promptly filed for transfer. Whatever the violations were, they were serious enough that Stoglin and Parker were both suspended for the whole upcoming season, thus their decisions to bail. Another off-season disaster for the UMd. Nothing but bad news this week as Pe'Shon Howard was nailed with disorderly conduct and arrested on Sunday. UMd discipline hasn't been decided, yet. A promising next season is suddenly in disorder. Jeesh. -- Al

Hi Al, a friend emailed me the story this morning. I was going to post here when I saw your update. Losing Stoglin will hurt and Parker was also a promising player. Still, I'm glad the coach is enforcing the rules. Have a pretty good idea what the violations were. Guess it will be up to the freshmen, who are supposed to be pretty good. Heck, UK will have 4 freshman and one sophomore as starters and have seen them ranked #4 in preseason polls. Maybe a tad hi but we'll see. Chris

Get ready Al, MD vs Ohio State tomorrow night. Part of the ACC /Big 10 Challenge. Oddly enough, MD will continue the series next yr as part of the Big 10. :rolleyes2: This is not exactly a very active thread. ^&cool Chris

Hi Chris. Haven't exactly gotten into Terp B-ball mode yet but I have caught a few of the games. They haven't looked too bad. Got some decent shooters. Will try and watch the game tomorrow. -- Al

Well Chris, that was ugly. Didn't care too much for the ball handling, or lack thereof. Thought Mitchell and Smotrycz looked good, Layman not so much. Still a work in progress.:redface2: -- Al

I had to turn it off when down by 25 :rolleyes2: UM has some quality players, don't know what is wrong, certainly ball handling as you mention, has been atrocious for the last couple of yrs. Layman had an off night, he's normally pretty good. Not going to be a good season without Len. Chris

MD down by 6 to Pitt at the half. As usual, way too many turnovers. On ESPNU. GO TERPS! Chris

Terps looked good against GT the other night. Not so much tonight. This season is up and down so far. No real groove. -- Al

Dean Smith, former North Carolina Head B-ball coach, has passed away. As a UMd grad, I am well acquainted with what Coach Smith accomplished with the Tar Heels. He was the man we Terps loved to hate. His teams were that good. Year after year, the NC games were the highlight of the season. I still remember the game at Cole Field House in Jan., 1973, when Jim O'Brien threw in 38 points for the Terps to beat Smith's Tar Heels. Best game I ever attended. Coach Smith was a worthy opponent and a class act. RIP. -- Al

Al:

He was the definition of class when it comes to NCAA sports. He coached for decades without a single NCAA violation while having a 95% graduation rate.

The Terps pulled out a solid win over Indiana last nite and I believe that victory gives the terps 20 wins for the season, it will be nice to get back into the NCAA tourney this year after missing the last few, need to play better for sure but I'm happy to be back in the big dance!!:smile2:...Sammy

That win does indeed give UMd 20 wins. It was a much closer victory than the 2 point spread indicates. Indiana had the last two shots to win or tie and couldn't get the shots to fall. Terps have been playing below par the last several games (3 close wins at home, 3 blowout losses on the road) so they have to get their act together or the dance will be a short one. Terps are 17-1 at home and 3-4 on the road, a big difference. -- Al

We'll take 'em anyway we can get 'em. :smile2: Go TERPS! Chris

Terps almost let this one get away. Another close win against Penn State. Penn State!!! :rolleyes2: Don't understand why they are the "kings of turnovers" yr after yr. As I said, we'll take 'em anyway we can get 'em. Go Terps!! Chris
