Lots of great games this weekend that are meaningless when you step back and realize that the playoff and championship will come down to the same teams.

Only the NBA outdoes college football when it comes to predictability.

Alabama
Georgia
Ohio State
Clemson

Right??

Oklahoma and Michigan might have a shot as well as USC; impressed with Sooners so far, their coach bolted to La La land and they haven't skipped a beat (so far).

If by some long shot Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan and USC get in, those are my four favorite programs, a dream scenario for me.

USC has a top five caliber offense with maybe the best QB and WR combo in the country and reasonable schedule with the soft PAC teams, but their defense stinks. They can't tackle or stop the run. Clay "Shazam" Helton left that cupboard bare. Another year or two, though. What a difference the transfer portal and a competent coach can make in one year.

If college football had brains they would have a playoff with six teams, a champion from the power five conference and one at large bid from the rest (FBS schools) with a conference championship game victory required to be in the playoff:

I guess that is too easy and more importantly, not as lucrative as their current garbage system.

It could be:

USC/Oregon/Utah
Alabama/Georgia/Arkansas
Michigan/Ohio State/Penn State
Oklahoma/Baylor/Oklahoma State
Clemson/North Carolina State/Wake Forest
App State/Boise State/Louisiana

The playoff series is going to 12 teams in 2026 but that date could be moved up to as early as 2024. So they've doubled your wish.:smile2:

Of all the misconceptions that I've ever had about college football, the biggest was that coaching didn't really matter. The best teams could just recruit a bunch of ringers and run over whomever they played on game play even if Minnie Pearl coached the team. But the evolution of USC in one year from the maybe their worst team in one hundred years under Clay "Gomer" Helton to Lincoln Riley has been astounding. The transfer portal played a big role in that but SC has yet to turn over the ball. They have few penalties and none of the dumb ones that plagued Clay Helton. Night and day. The coaching has made all the difference.

I like the expansion, as long as it gets rid of rankings to decide the playoff teams and ultimately the championship.

I was able to visit with Coach Dooley at the Samford game the other day. I haven't seen him in several years. He just recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Although we didn't really play our best against Samford, we sure did look good this past Saturday at South Carolina. I think we've got a shot at another NC this year.

ESPN is hyping the Florida vs. Tennessee game this weekend.

They should also hype the Nats and Marlins game in MLB, considering just like Florida and Tennessee, nether team has a shot at the playoffs.

I need to pay closer attention. When did the Nats get eliminated?:rolleyes2: -- Al

Outside of the juggernauts of Bama and Georgia, the SEC has been really average. Some teams like TN and Florida have been downright awful for years. ESPN has been a SEC pumper for as long as I can remember. So it doesn't surprise me that they are hyping a middling game. Both teams look improved but only because they have been so awful.

Funny thing about SEC football:

Vanderbilt is consistently the worst team in the SEC.

Vanderbilt is the only SEC school in the top 15 academic rankings.

Like several top teams, USC narrowly escaped the Beavs last night. Coming in they were averaging 51 points per game. They had 3 at halftime. Not pretty but winning ugly is still winning. Onward.

My favorite play of the day has to be a fake punt by Ohio St. while up 39 points in the 4th quarter. Trying to run up the score. In poetic justice, their punter got destroyed on the sideline with a late hit.

Caleb Williams reminds me a lot of Patrick Mahomes. I've never seen any QB sidestep pressure in the pocket like him. He made some plays last night against ASU that were unreal. And he made them look effortless. It's too bad that USC has such a lousy defense.

Tough weekend for the Top 25, which went 14-10. Several upsets and 5 games involved 2 ranked teams, so someone had to lose. Georgia and Bama both woke up late, winning in the 4th. -- Al

Georgia and Bama are machines. Almost no weaknesses. Bama is on the greatest run in college football history. I hate to say it, but Nick Satan is the greatest college coach in history. I don't like the guy, but like my vote for politicians, I'll take results over likeability. Nice guys finish last in college football. Only the meanest and most corrupt SOB can field a consistent winner. Even so, I like Nick more than Dabo at Clemson with his weird Elvis-like entrance before the game off the team bus.

Startling news: Big state schools tend to have better football teams, and lower academic standards, than smaller private universities.

That sure is some funny funny stuff about the SEC....

PS: Next thing we'll "learn" that Harvard and Yale are better known for their academics than athletics.

Seriously? SEC schools Alabama, GA and LSU have won five of the last 7 national championships.
In fact the SEC has won 12 of the last 16 national championships (since 2006). While Alabama has dominated, that does lessen the opportunities for other SEC schools doesnt it?

Of the other 4 National Championships since 2006, Clemson and Florida State won three. As these schools compete for recruits in the same region as the rest of the SEC, one could reasonably say that 15 of the last 16 National Championships have been won by southern schools. Ohio State won in 2014.

FLA won national championships in 2008 and 2006. Auburn won in 2009. LSU won in 2019, 2007, and 2003 (shared w/SO Cal). Ga is the reigning National Champ and is 5-0 in 2022.
And TN won a Natl Championship as recently as 1998.

If thats "really average" then........

Alabama really is something else, with the Patriots in the toilet, time to go full tilt on Alabama, have always liked that team and yes Saban is a great, great coach, they lose their QB, this kid comes in off the bench and they don't skip a beat.

Their second string kids could probably go 9-2 and blitzkrieg their way through college football.

Oklahoma, Alabama, Michigan, USC are my top 4 favorite programs, been that way since I was a little kid.
