IN the AFL over here they are very strict on tackles below the knee diving in and taking out the legs after a series of broken legs and serious knee injuries.
I watch alot of NFL and AFL (My 2 favourite sports) but they are both getting to the point where tackling has become the #1 skill only so you don't give away penalties etc.
IMHO AFL is getting to sterile and the umpires/Refs have way to much control over the game, they have the POWER to win or loose a game and i reckon its wrong.

In NFL you see more of the REF,s than the players on TV deciding this, doing there fancy little moves etc,and in the AFL they are the same my pet hate is calling a player by his first name like there mates, should be refered to by there by number i reckon.
My point is both sports are going down the same track the more safer they try and make it the more dangerous it becomes, there are more serious injuries in AFL now than there where 15 years ago.
If THEY so called official of the sport the powers to be (Who most have nevered played a serious game in there lives) are left in control and making it all about the dollar we ALL are in trouble, let the players play
and the rest will look after itself.

Well, offense is what the NFL wants, so offense is what the rules are designed to assist, and it works. Of the 32 teams in the NFL, only 8 are giving up 20 or fewer points per game, with Carolina leading the way by allowing a miserly 14.4 points per game. Playing defense is rapidly becoming a lost art. As I mentioned a few posts ago, Denver is shooting it's way through the NFL by scoring 40 points per game, but doing little on defense, giving up 26.5 points per. Not much to fall back on if SuperManning has a bad day. I guess we'll see if defense can still win the big one. All the NFL has to do is find someone who can still play it under today's rules. :rolleyes2: -- Al
Chargers found the Broncos weak point, defense, and kept SuperManning off the field with an effective running game. Denver gave up it's usual 27 points but Manning wasn't on the field enough to score his usual 40 points, so Denver losses. Sounds like a plan to emulate. -- Al

I thought it was a pretty gutty performance by the Chargers to go in there and win and put themselves up there for the 6th playoff spot. I'm sure it helped that the Chargers Coach was the Broncos Offensive Coordinator last year. I thought Rivers looked pretty weak last year and earlier this year but he seems to have bounced back.

If the NFL was serious about player safety, they would not be considering an 18-game schedule and playing on artifical turf. Two things that ensure a large number of injuries. They would go back to a 14 game schedule. It's all about the money. Most fans don't want to see a 7-0 defensive struggle. They want high scoring games. So they created a lot of silly penalties that open up the game. Maybe they unintentionally also make the game safer, but that is not the driving force of the owners.

I don't believe they can unless they reduce the pre-season by two games because in the last labor negotiations the Union refused to even discuss extending the season by two games.

The players are as greedy as the owners. If the money is on the table, they will accept it. So I wouldn't be shocked to see them go to 18 games. They might also reduce the number of preseason games - which are ridiculous anyway - but most of the starters don't see much time in preseason. As a result, it doesn't have a corresponding reduction in the beatings they take in a regular season game.

It's been awhile but I think they were worried about the safety issue, which is why it was a complete non-starter for them.

The pre-season is a joke. Even if they do not expand the regular season they should get rid of it.

Well after the Chargers knocked off the Broncos last night, the Patriots now have their own destiny in their hands; if they win out, they are the #1 seed in the AFC.

Unbelievable they are in this position considering they've lost their two starting defensive tackles to season ending injuries and have plugged in late round/undrafted free agents to fill the holes, their captain on defense and best linebacker for the season in Mayo, Talib and Dennard, their two starting cornerbacks for extended periods to injury, their starting running back Vereen and best pass catcher out of the backfield for ten weeks to injury, Gronkowski for six weeks to injury, now he's out for the rest of the year and two starting offensive linemen to season ending injuries.

Sorry, but BB is the best coach in the NFL, hands down, end of story.

This team is 10-3 and had they been able to score a TD on a first and goal at the two vs the Bengals and not gotten jobbed on one horrible call vs the Jets and one horrible non call vs the Panthers, they could easily be 13-0.

Incredible.

Well we can flush that thought down the ****ter thanks to the Doofins led Blood and Guts Philbin knocking off the Patriots today; #3 seed is more like it now, maybe #4 if they loose to Flacco and the Ravens next week.

Too bad, Gronk being out limits their options in the red zone.

Whatever, just make the tournament and go from there.

The Cowboys had a major choke job yesterday. It's interesting how fortune swings to and fro for some teams over the years. There was a time when the Cowboys, Raiders and Redskins could do no wrong. Every player and coach turned out to be a success. Year after year they had great teams. Now no matter how much money they spend or who they hire it implodes. Dan Snyder is cursed in DC. Everything he touches turns to shinola. The Cowboys got what they deserved, though, in hiring Monte Kiffin to coach their D. He's the guy USC fired even though his son was the head coach because his D got torched at the college level. The game passed him by years ago.

Great post (as usual).

The Cowboys are cursed, that abomination of a stadium must be built on an indian burial ground or something, they blew a 26-3 lead vs a mediocre Packers team.

And so are the Redskins, they finally show a glimmer of hope with RGIII, then than turns to shinola as you put it, would love to know the story behind the story there.

And the Raiders have stunk on ice since 2003, that franchise is a mess, those fans murder me with their tough guy halloween costumes, they look like a bunch of escaped mental patients in the stands at that dump of a stadium.

As you said, three once great franchises that have bottomed out.

As far as the rest of the league; it looks like in the AFC there will be one playoff team with a 9-7 record, while in the NFC, either the Cardinals, Panthers or 49ers are going to get screwed out of a playoff spot as not one but two mediocre division winners will get in, the winner of the NFC East between the Eagles and Cowboys and the NFC Central as the Lions, Bears and Packers are all fighting for the division will both get in.

There will be two division winners with 9-7 records (or worse) while a much more worthy team at 11-5 or 10-6 goes home.

What a farce.

Look at this way, George, at least you won't have to worry about the Giants if the Pats go to the Meadowlands for the Super Bowl.

Great imitation they did of a doormat vs the Seachickens yesterday.

You know what's funny Brad; if the Ravens win tonight, next week vs the Patriots and the last week of the season vs the Bungles (which they will do, because, well because they're the Ravens and pulling wins out of their behinds has become an art form for that team) and the Doofins beat the Bills and the Jets and the Patriots lose to the Ravens and the Bills, the Patriots are out, as in they don't make the playoffs.

A real possibility with the loss of Gronk, they had to settle for two field goals yesterday and couldn't score with four shots at the end zone at the end of the game; guaranteed they score at least one TD with Gronk in there and win that game yesterday.

They've had a lot of injuries this year and have soldiered on, but the loss of Gronk is going to kill the 2013 version of the Patriots.

What a shame as the AFC is so weak this year, it's bad, bad, bad................

I'm afraid it might get ugly for my ravens tonight George if the Lions are scoring a lot of points, esp. The way the Ravens have played on the road, not seeing much chance of a raven win tonite which means a good chance they will not make the playoffs, hoping I'm wrong but at 7-6 its been a looooong season...Sammy

I think tonight will be competitive. The Lions are a very odd team. Lot of talent but the results aren't there. Moreover, I want the Ravens to win so the Bears can take the lead.

Have faith, the Lions have a way of coming up small in moments like this, the NFC East and Central have turned into "I don't want it, you take it"...........................On second thought; a guy on the pregame here just said the Ravens are not good on the road to the tune of 1-5 so far this year.

Wow, that is really bad.

I guess you're right afterall.

Gutty win for the Ravens. Another enigmatic loss for the Lions, a team that's hard to decipher. I would imagine ownership is running out of patience.

Yep, a real gutty win for the Ravens. They have a very good offensive coordinator, my favorite play he calls is "
Ok Joe, it's third down and half a mile, heave it up there off your back foot into double coverage and we'll get the sure PI call and a first down", they seem to go to it whenever needed.

The montage they showed with about a minute left in the 3rd quarter of the Super Bowl, Pittsburg and Minnesota wins all courtesy of non PI's called on their defense was infuriating to watch. And not to pile on, but that non call for arm barring in the end zone was an absolute joke, the ref was what, FIVE feet away, the receiver would have caught that for an easy TD if his left arm wasn't being held.

No offense there Sammy as I know you're a big Ravens fan, they are a talented team, play very good defense, have a QB who is very good when he wants to be, all of the PI's they get and the non PI's their defense gets is a joke.

Their rookie DB ran his mouth this week, calling Johnson old and he'll handle him; so Johnson goes out and drops about four passes, including the two point conversion and a WIDE OPEN crossing route in the first quarter that he might have scored on.

The Lions have so much talent on both sides of the ball, their coach is clueless, he should have been calling time outs down the stretch to give his offense time after the Ravens took the lead with that field goal that was kicked from Cleveland and was good.

Imagine if the Ravens win out, get the #4 seed and if things fall right, in the second round they go to Denver again; I'm sure the Broncos are thrilled at that prospect.

The Ravens are driving me nutso. They have played 9 games decided by 3 or fewer points and have gone 5-4 in those games. My BP is getting worse and what little hair I have is falling out. Team motto must be "Why do things the easy way?".:rolleyes2: -- Al
