NFL Season 2016-17 (1 Viewer)

Mike,

I totally agree, there was some bad officiating today. Atlanta lost on that bad call, the Giants were able to hold on and win despite a phantom pass interference call where the Giants defender had position and looked to make an interception when the receiver tackled him before the ball arrived, which clearly should have been offensive pass interference. We talk about this every season. The part-time referees just don't do a very good job, and seem to blow one or two critical calls in each game. Real full time referees who are younger, in better shape, and more accountable would help a lot, as would making the rules more concrete and leaving less to interpretation. Why, for example does "incidental contact" excuse contact with a receiver more than 5 yards from the line of scrimmage? I don't care if the referee thinks the defender "accidentally" bumped or tripped a receiver, if the receiver gets knocked down, it should be a penalty, period. The same holds true for holding. They say you can call it on every play. Then call it. If an offensive lineman's hands are grabbing a defensive lineman trying to rush the passer or tackle a runner it should be called. Let it be called on 3 or 4 straight plays and offensive linemen will remember the proper way to block. But that would interfere with the leagues precious offensive statistics and screw up fantasy football. We couldn't possibly make calls fair to the defense in this day and age. Having video review be done by independent referees in a central location who are not vested in the original call (like both MLB and the NHL handle replay), and allowing them to call and/or disallow penalty calls would be the final correction. But none of this will ever happen, because it might mess with the only thing the NFL really cares about: the bottom line.

You never know what you are going to get with the Steelers this year. One game they are the 1972 Dolphins, the next game they are the 2008 Lions.

No kidding, all eyes are awaiting the news out of Pittsburgh to see how long Ben is out. When he got hurt, they panicked and got off rhythm, by the time he came back, too late. The Dolphins no offense to Miami fans are not that good, but they were yesterday. The Steelers have a legit shot at being a legit team in the end, but they have to figure out consistency and get through these injuries.

Sammy - not sure if you heard, but Suggs tore a bicep and the radio this morning indicated it was worse than reported yesterday, he may be done. Also, the local radios are really beating up Harbaugh here. I do agree with you the North is open, it shouldn't be as I think there is one team that is better than the others, but again, you are correct, injuries are changing the game right now.

George,
I thought we were going to have an epic game this upcoming week, but as usual, a seemingly meaningless game in Miami has changed the Steeler's course (last year was the Rams game). I would say the Pats will dispose of Pittsburgh fairly easily without Ben. Landry cannot keep the offense on the field long enough to give the D a rest.

If I learned anything from the 2008 Super Bowl, there is no such thing as a sure thing in the NFL, so we'll see. Any road game is difficult, one in Pittsburg even more so.............

Louis...

on Beckham's second TD...
he ran off the field...
outside the endzone...
even outside the endzone painted border...
he took off his helmet...
completely off the field of play...
he then ran straight to his sideline..
not taunting anyone...
except the kicking net...^&grin

and yet...he still got a 15 yard penalty for it...

I thought if you were off the field of play...
you could remove your helmet...

did I miss something?

I didn't see the Giants game because my son and I were watching the abysmal 49ers game. However, I did hear about Beckham's antics and today Mike Francesa, the afternoon host on WFAN in New York, is railing about those antics. Several fans, long time Giants fans, have called in complaining that they're done with watching the Giants.

This me, me attitude is prevalent throughout the league and there appears to be no end in sight. The only remedy is to hand down fines that are above and beyond the norm but I doubt the union agreement would permit this. Moreover, the league seems more interested in marketing than actual football.

the superstar phenomena..."me...me...me"...is prevalent on a lot of teams...

Dez Bryant...so talented...but such a jerk...and I have had worse...

Terrell Owens a few years ago...he was the worst of all...

Keyshawn Johnson was a pain too...I can still see him arguing with Parcells on the sideline...

I still could name others in between...very talented players with selfish agendas...

their sideline antics disrupt the whole flow of the game...they actually bother me more than showboating...

and I DESPISE SHOWBOATING...

on the field...the taunting, the trash talk...the poor sportsmanlike conduct penalties...the stupid dead ball fouls...
I can't stand them...they cost the team too much in field position...

I get mad at false starts, holding, hands to the face and other dumb penalties...but I can always chalk them up to lack of preparation, eagerness or at least console myself that the player made an unintentional mistake...I can excuse them to human error...

the excessive choreographed celebration is my absolute least favorite...

owners should have a clause in the player's contract for a $25,000.00 fine for some of these dead ball penalties...they hurt the team...

was watching a pre game show Sunday before kickoff...Tony Gonzalez was on the panel...who I greatly admired...they asked him about dunking the ball over the goal post after a TD and getting the unsportsmanlike 15 yard penalty...

to paraphrase his reply...

"That's the cost of my doing business."

what a jerk...purposely penalize the whole team for yourself...

Here in Texas the big debate regarding Dallas is letting Romo play again. I say NO !!! Let him be the back up QB for Dak.
This Rookie has brought some much needed new life and results to the Cowboys. Dallas has some serious momentum at
this point. Yeah, Romo got paid a TON of $$$ but if their winning streak continues he can continue to watch from the
sidelines.

Mike,
The Patriots are 7.5 favorites at Pittsburg this week; would you lay those points on the road?

LMK what you think; with my luck, I'll lay them, then the QB will shoot up his knee, limp onto the field and have the game of his life.

Without him starting, I'm tempted..................

A few years back the NCAA toyed with the idea of penalizing a player for excessive celebration/taunting with a 15 yard penalty and a replay of the down. Yup, if you taunted or had an excessive celebration on a touchdown you were not only penalized in yardage but you lost the points too. They abandoned the idea as too Draconian.

Maybe it isn't such a bad idea?

I'm no fan of showboating, but a 15 yard penalty for celebrating is ridiculous. Let's take the stupid authority to penalize a team for celebrating out of the hands of 60+ year old part time referees. Let the players police themselves. On the next running play the receiver has to block on, knock him on his butt.

Good to see the 49ers going up in smoke. Chip Kelly needs to get back to college ball real fast where his gimmick offense worked. And that QB whose name shall not be mentioned should start learning to ask if you want fries with that.

George...I have made more money with Tom Brady blowing teams out the last 5 years than any team I have picked...I took them -8 1/2 against Cincy last week...NE started slow...but covered easily...without Big Ben...yea...take the chalk...I don't think a needle is gonna set him straight...I thought he was having surgery...3 weeks out...is that wrong?

probably come back early from a stem cell transplant in Switzerland and crush the Cowboys...

Wayne...I'm so tired of logging on to ESPN and Fox to read this story line...it's getting to be a joke...the press needs some new news...they live for controversy...so...like Jones...I'm waffleing on this...I feel a loyalty to Romo and wonder if he could be 5-1 if he was the QB...

after beating Dalton and then GB at Lambeau...(with an uncharacteristic Rodgers)...it's kind of hard to remain loyal to Romo...Dakota is doing everything right...and most of my Cowboy friends are saying the same thing you are...

I know he can't scramble as well as Prescott...but he's extremely accurate...is more willing to open the game up with long passes...can read a defense better...and he has the third highest career passing rating of any quarterback ever and the fourth highest career completion rate ever...he's just never had a defense to hold the lead...no matter what his record and stats are...no QB can win without a defense to stop the other team...

Prescott has enjoyed a very easy schedule so far...the five teams Dak has beaten so far have a combined record of 11-18...three of those teams — the Redskins, Bears and 49ers — were a combined 1-8 before their Dallas game.

when Romo had Demarco Murray...he went 12-4...if he had Zeke Elliot...I think he would have done as well as Prescott to this point...

they were lucky...they caught Dalton and Rodgers on off days...cause they have no defense...unfortunately...a good QB is gonna eat them alive...

don't get me wrong...I love what Prescott has done so far...in my wildest dreams I didn't expect to be 5-1 with 2 weeks off to heal up at this point...I'll support whoever they put in...

but I'll take Romo at this point...he's just soooooooooooooo fragile it seems...

I read an article about Farve...never missing hardly any games...he said he played through the pain so he would not be in a position to be replaced by a hot handed back up...

I guess every team has their share of injuries but it seems my Ravens excel in this catagory :(:( just this past Sunday...Yanda (all Pro guard) Stanley (6th pick in rookie class having a decent year) Starters Dumerville, Steve Smith, Devin Hester, C.J. Mosley all OUT of Sundays Giants game, top it off for a little salt in the wound, Jimmy Smith held OBJ to 2 catches for 11 yards and a fumble in 1st half, Smith sustains a concussion leaves the game and Bammmmm!!!!! OBJ goes nuts on Smith's back up :mad: thennnnnnnn Suggs tears his bicep {eek3} unreal, this team has talent and somehow, some way think they will be there come late December but if the injury bug doesn't heal over the next few weeks, might start planning another draft party early this year...Sammy

I am in the DAK Prescott camp. I think the team is clicking and you stick with him.

I'm no Dallas fan, but you don't fix what ain't broke. Cowboys should ride the hot hand. If and when he cools off, then go back to Romo. You will then have a full blown Qb controversy, just like the Redskins did with Sonny vs Billy. But what the heck, what's a little controversy among friends?:wink2: -- Al

Another awful Monday night game. I don't think there have been any decent Monday or Thursday night games. After halftime I switched it to the Cleveland Toronto game (and I'm a Jets fan; my son was enjoying my misery). It was basically an unwatchable game.

The NFL has a problem on it's hands and it's called Monday and Thursday night football. They have to guess and hope that the match-ups, scheduled so far in advance, actually turn out to be entertaining contests. There have been far more misses than hits for many years now. I haven't watched a Monday or Thursday night game in years unless the Redskins or Ravens are playing, with the possible exception of the rare marquee contest, which as mentioned, don't occur very often. The NFL should dump Thursday night altogether and put more effort into Monday night, or maybe just dump that as well. -- Al

They make too much in Ad revenue to dump any night.
