Nfl season 2017-2018 (4 Viewers)

I don't think it's a laughing matter but getting back to Joe's question, I think only a doctor could answer that question. My limited understanding is that repeated blows to the head, which can result in concussions, will cause damage to the brain. How much damage you may suffer in gang fights, I couldn't answer. I saw an article the other day where doctors are saying that kids shouldn't play football before the age of 12 as their brains are still developing. Based on studies, 12 seems to be the cutoff date. If you suffer injury before 12 you're more likely to develop brain damage, after 12, less likely to do so.

My understanding is CTE appears like early Alzheimer’s. I don’t think drug use and the random gang fight would show this. I am by no means a doctor or expert in brain anatomy. Just my thoughts.

I am hearing the family is suing the Pats and nfl about this. Will be interesting to watch.

Right; the family is suing the Patriots because it's their fault he developed CTE.

That makes a lot or sense................:rolleyes2:

It wasn't CTE that caused Hernandez to shoot those two people at a traffic light, then shoot Lloyd because he was talking to someone about it.

He did it because that's how he's wired, CTE or not.

And it's not one major concussion here or there that causes it, it's the small everyday, repeated blows to the head during practice or a game that causes it, specifically to offensive and defensive linemen and running backs.

Just ask the family of Mike Webster among others.

I don't know how anyone would be able to separate out where the true damaging blows to the head originated from, but I think it's safe to say if you play football you're going to get hit hard in the head a lot, especially at certain positions. But then I see guys like Chris Spielman, the intense OSU MLB who played pro too for many years, and he is sharp as a tack today. But I know other guys aren't so lucky. Maybe Spielman just knew how to tackle and shed blocks correctly.
It's gotta be a tough call for parents whose kids love football and everything about it. I think it has always been a tough call to some degree. I know my parents preferred that I played other sports. I'm lucky I didn't have to make the call with my own son who is a soccer player. Soccer is a wonderful sport for boys and girls of any age (I encourage all to try it!), yet surprisingly it has a lot of physical contact as well. In any case, concussions surely are nasty, particularly grade 3, and if you're constantly re-injuring part of the body, no matter what part it is, it will potentially have a cumulative affect resulting in a form of physiological change and/or impairment.

I was going to boycott the games today but I haven't been watching anyway. So maybe I'm just extending my disinterest rather boycotting. The NFL has really put itself in a bind sticking its head in the sand on the National Anthem. It just highlights how crazy the world has become when you can't celebrate a TD without a penalty flag but can stage political protest at the game.

Watching Jacksonville v the Ravens and it looks as though the Ravens must have flown a local Pee-Wee league team to London to play the game. Jags lead 23-0 at the half. Ravens have been hideous on offense in the 1st half. Flacco is 4-12 with 8 yards passing as the team has managed 15 yards total offense and 1 first down. Absolutely pitiful and one of the worst offensive performances that I can remember. Hope the Ravens send the real team out for the 2nd half. -- Al

Never got any better. Ravens turned the ball over on their first 2 second half drives, resulting in Jag Td's and that was all she wrote. Ravens finally scored with 3 1/2 minutes left to avoid the shutout. Final was 44-7 and one of the worst beatings I can remember a Baltimore team taking. {sm2} -- Al

Went back and checked, this ties for the worst loss in Raven history. They also lost by 37 to Pittsburgh in 1997, 37-0, so I guess you could say today's travesty is the second-worst loss in Ravens history. :rolleyes2: -- Al

What's wild is that the public's attention is more focused on these nationalist controversies than they are on the country's external threats. Great object lesson in how Western democracies were overrun in 1940.:rolleyes2:

The President has made it a bigger issue than it needed to be.

Looks like the Giants are in trouble with the Eagles. At 0-3 their season could be over. On the other hand the Jets are surprisingly beating the Dolphins 20-0 so far. They could be costing themselves the number 1 pick.

It wouldn't have been an issue at all if the owners had enforced a consistent policy. They have workplace policies for this type of thing that, for example, prohibited the Dallas Cowboys from putting a decal on their helmets to support police officers who were slain in Dallas. They are simply fearful of offending anyone in this instance or being criticized and have let it go until its become an issue. I won't watch another game until it is resolved. Let the players who don't want to stand sit in the locker room until the NA is over. Anyone that kneels should be suspended for that game.

Giants lost a tough one, right at the buzzer. Saw it in the airport with many Giant fans as we were boarding. Lot of unhappy faces.

Another shocker tonight as the Redskins manhandled the Raiders 27-10. Never saw it coming. Either the Redskins are better than I think they are, or the Raiders aren't as good as they think they are. Raiders were never in the game as Cousins shot them to pieces. If it weren't for 2 Redskin turnovers deep in their own territory, the Raiders would have been shutout. Redskins were as dominant as the Ravens were dominated. Strange day. -- Al

Was chatting with Tom D. At the show and he mentioned every time the Steelers play the weekend of the Chicago show they lose!!!! Iauhed and told him that Pitt would kill the bears, Tom must know his boys!! But at least they showed up to play, unlike my Ravens who wasted gas by even flying to London:mad:...an absolute embarrassment in all faucets of the game, don't worry Tom even the Ravens play even a third of the way this Sunday you'll win by 30 going away.

Real great game tonight. Shows how bad the Bears are. I don't want to sound like a racist but how does a player whose last name is Cohen have Tarik as his first name. Since he's not even Jewish maybe the better question is why is his last name Cohen?

The NFL is showcasing another outstanding match-up in London this AM, between powerhouses from Miami and New Orleans. It is almost halftime and it is an breathtaking 0-0 tie. It is the definition of a 'flag-fest'. No wonder ratings are so down and fans are finding other things to do. The product on the field is just plain bad. The Brits must be really impressed.:rolleyes2: Thank goodness there is a full slate of Baseball games today.:wink2: -- Al
Update: The rout is on. The Saints have scored at the halftime gun to take a insurmountable 3-0 lead.

The Brits are used to football matches being tied 0-0 at the half......................

I was thinking the same thing. Shows you what aristocracy and bad food can do to people.:wink2:
