Spot on. As you say can you imagine even trying to bring him to trial, would be a nightmare. And while I'm on my soapbox, why all this umming and ahhing about releasing his picture because it's too gruesome, just do it and let us put the whole thing to bed, or Seabed in this case.

Rob

Completely agree, Rob. Also cannot understand the element asking why he wasn't taken alive. Can you imagine the long winded process of putting him on trial, the endless appeals against the sentence, and the convuluted arguments of the lawyers hell bent on dragging the process on as long as possible for the sake of profit. All this plus an instant increase in terorist activity taking hostages and threatening death unless he is released? Armed or unarmed he had to die, and I doubt the man who pulled the trigger has lost any sleep over it. The whole team who undertook the mission should be given the reward ($50million?) equally divided.Trooper

With apologies to the SEALS but I liked the tweet about Chuck Norris returning from a trip to Pakistan.

OBL had to die when the encounter took place. Taking him captive would simply create too many problems that could have lasted for years.

I think from the day George Bush (the little one) stated his now infamous dead or alive speech there was never any intention of taking him alive and, after the debacle of watching Saddams trial and execution nobody wanted to see another episode.

Best thing was a quick shot and thats what allegedly happened. The figure head is gone but, we need to forget him ASAP. we are placing too much importance on him and get the number two who, is a real threat. Bin Lid was a ideological figure head and has been for some time. Take out all of the known terror cells we are watching waiting for them to do something and weaken them further.

With the exception of a few small demonstrations in Pakistan, I've seen no news footage of any mass protests over bin Laden's death anywhere!

There will no doubt be more al-Qaeda terrorist acts but these will be done by a few "believers". I don't think they represent the muslim world and I suspect most muslims (certainly those I know) are glad to see the end of him.

Thank goodness he died resisting. It is irrelevant whether he had a weapon or not. To put him on trial would have been a far more dangerous outcome.

Congratulations to US Navy SEAL Team 6. SEALS rule! Go Navy! {bravo}} -- Al

Gimme a break- lucky shot if I ever heard of one!! {sm4}{sm4}{sm4}

I'm ducking and weaving from all my navy friends these days, sort of feel like UBL myself- fleeing from the navy!! {sm4} They aren't letting me live this one down.

Well, hangover is subsiding, euphoria is releasing. EASILY ONE OF THE BEST DAYS OF MY LIFE!!

Ironic thing is my parents got me a book on UBL for Christmas which I have been reading for the past several weeks- guess I know how the story ends!! {sm4}

@Combat and Trooper- great posts fellas- I agree 100%.

UBL was for all intents and purposes a very very real threat and absolutely had to go. His reach or influence may have decreased (which I personally doubt), but him being alive was a huge middle finger at the US.

In short, God Bless America and the Military- even the Seals!! ^&grin

its just been announced by the CIA director who stated the president and colleagues watched the whole event that now, they only watched the troops arriving and enteering the compound and not the actual shooting!!!!

How to build the conspiracy theorists bread and butter you did not get him he died in dec 2001 in Tora Bora claim.

Show the pics dead easy it was done with Saddams sons why not here quell the disbelievers in one fell swoop

Are they really trying to tell us Hilary Clinton sat there with her hand over her face just because they were 'entering the compound', she looked pretty shocked to me.

Rob

she was upset because they interrupted The Apprentice (which I was watching at the time)^&grin

I will be really really interested to read about who made the decision to give the nod to the SEALs- again, nothing personal against them, I just know at JSOC that there is a lot of turf wars involved. Would be interesting to see if their professionalism in dealing with the Somali pirate engagements gave them the nod. I'm assuming those engagements proved to the world the effectiveness of their snipers and that might have played a role?????? I dunno......

If that blackhawk crash doesn't make knock some common sense into some high level decision makers about the adequacy of the crashhawks in high risk missions, then nothing will. Those things are impressive pieces of equipment but seem to conk out at really really inopportune times.

I agree about the detail that OBL was unarmed, or that it should have been handled as a law-and-order issue. This wasn't some guy who had 1000 overdue parking tickets, or even robbed a bank. He wasn't a US citizen, so he had no claim on the protections we can claim. He declared war on us-on the West-and on those Muslims who don't believe as he did. And he proved his ruthlessness, his willingness to kill anyone who fell into those categories. Sure, you want to be civilized, but when it comes down to life or death, to paraphrase George C Scott from "Patton", we wanted to make him die for his country. He got more mercy than he deserved. He didn't face a death in the flames, or by plummeting hundreds of feet to the street below. Two shots in the head was more mercy than he deserved.

Prost!
Brad

this snippet of information must have created a lot of different variables for the team to deal with:

Nine children ages 2 to 12 and three women, one of whom was Arab, were taken from the compound by the Pakistani military after the raid to the military hospital in town

nine children to deal with at those young ages- tough indeed!!

I'll say. Sadam's trial and hanging became a circus.

reference is always important, notice the day and time this thread was started, even before the pres. spoke...

Fox News has posted pictures of several of those killed on the compound. I assume they may have gotten those pictures from the Pakistanis. Fairly gruesome stuff. Interesting speculation about the helicopters that were used in the raid having some type of stealth capability. Whatever they used to destroy it really did the job:

those photos were released by us. not pakistan. they were posted to reuters first, i believe.

my guess is that the obl photos will be released during the election cycle. taking "the moral high ground" doesn't apply when someone is running for office.

i know this is an extremely cynical remark but that's where i'm at with this and a host of other national issues.

modern birds really have always had some sort of "stealth" capability. The chunk of bird hanging from that one wall looks like it is some kind of sloped armor maybe?? has some kind of reflective composite material like the B2 Stealth Bomber???

Those kids running around with chunks of debris could probably hock that stuff on ebay and make more than their parents do in a decade!! {sm4}

with all the money that could be at stake for glimpses of those shots, I'll be stunned if we don't see them in the next month or so.

i honestly dont know about that. our can be extremely effective at suppressing images when it wants to, not so much when it needs to.

remember how long it took for photos of caskets in mass numbers took to be released when it was inconvenient for the last president?

i'm assuming there was tight control on those images and how many people came into contact with them. i could be wrong but, hey, those are political gold. the money is chump change compared to an election and i'm sure the leak would be prosecuted to the fullest extent.

Wrong.
"The photos, taken by a Pakistani security official who entered the compound after the early morning raid on Monday, show two men dressed in traditional Pakistani garb and one in a t-shirt, with blood streaming from their ears, noses and mouths.
The official, who wished to remain anonymous, sold the pictures to Reuters".
