Snow (2 Viewers)

Funny thing about memory. The stats for the 1st half of February and it's been the coldest ever and by a whopping 3C. We have had a few really cold days, but nowhere near the number of really cold Artic vortex days last year. A case where a low daily average and no warm days sets a record??? Last winter had a few warm days but lots of really cold ones and was much tougher. Sometimes stats do lie.

The one stat that bothers me is the "feels like" temperature. The temperature is a number, it either is or it isn't those particular degrees.

When the temperature on a sheltered thermometer is -30C, skin can freeze in 25 minutes. When the wind chill takes an unsheltered thermometer down to -40C, skin can freeze in less than 10 minutes. So even if you tell your skin that the "real" temperature is only -30C, your skin will still freeze in less than 10 minutes. Wind chill takes away body heat faster than calm air. From experience I can guarantee you that a wind chill of -40C feels a lot colder than a temperature of -30C.

Terry:

Thanks for the explanation but I still do not fully understand it. The numbers invloved get in the way of me grasping the "feeling" side of it.

Having a chilly day here in the Mid-Atlantic state of Maryland. Temps in negative territory because of wind chills during daytime and negative actual temps after dark. Supposed to stay negative for a least another day. Odd, but I could have sworn that Maryland was not part of the Ross Ice Shelf.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Here on the mid-coast we are getting --ANOTHER-- {sm2} snow storm at this moment.

Prediction was for 8"-10" but it looks as if we might .. (ha, ha) only get 6".
So that makes the total around 80" - 85" outside my door. Thankfully it has all be pretty light and fluffy.

Saves one from getting a heart attack or pulled muscles. Still, everyone needs to take care of their health even with fluffy stuff.

STAY SAFE Shoveling guys....

* Use a small shovel, light loads
* Drink plenty of water
* Only shovel for short durations and rest
* DON'T shovel after a big meal.
* DON'T shovel first thing in the morning. The body needs to get warmed up.
* Stretch before any shoveling.

..... or hire an 18 year old to do it for you.

...LARRY!

Suffice to say I loathe cold weather...a couple of camping trips to Korea cured me of cold weather festivities. I feel for you guys up north and yeah be safe. I just don't know how you guys work up there in that miserable weather.

Anywho, mornings in San Antonio have been around 36 degrees and and highs in the 60's. We will be in the 70's in the next couple of days and I am NOT trying to rub it in! But, brother you got to get out of there!

Gee Kirk, that looks so familiar ... oh wait ... that could be almost anywhere in NE. I just got done with the latest 6" of snow; then the sun actually appeared ... no, really. But it is snowing again ... looks like we are going to get another 4"-6" of snow tonight.

THEN this week end looks like a big one!

When I got in my car today, the car thermometer read -1; I'd never seen that before. By the time I got to work (about a ten minute drive), it read 2. Although it's 2, it feels like -20.

You wonder how animals can survive in this weather but I believe that most of them prepare for this weather. Even our cat, who is a neighborhood murderer, has very little desire to go out.

You may want to consider getting rid of the snow on top of the roof over your door way, prevent stress on the structure and columns !

Take Care !

Nicholas Cameron...in Salem New Hampshire...told me the other day that he shoveled all the snow off his roof...

it took him 5-6 hours with a helper...

he said the pitch of his roof is pretty flat and he had well over 4 feet resting on it...

he became concerned when he said he heard the roof "groaning"... and more snow was expected...

having nowhere to put the snow except along the side of his house...he said he can't even see out of his windows now...

We're having a heat wave. Temp has climbed to 8 degrees actual, but wind chill still at -7. Overnight lows set records, breaking marks that were over a century old. Wind chill supposed to get above 0 by 1pm or so. We shall see. More snow and ice due tomorrow to the tune of 4-8 inches. On the plus side, pitchers and catchers have reported to Spring Training.:wink2: -- Al

More risk to the roof and me by going up there !

Good catch on the snoblower. 10HP , 28" cut
Looks like someone has a 10hp self-propelled snowblower :)

And yes Mike - that is a lot of snow. More than I could ever shovel.

Terry

it is starting to drive us crazy. no place to put it

that is crazy!!!

Wow, you fellas can't catch a break, I was talking to my brother who lives in the Outer Banks in Carolina and the Sound side of the Ocean has begun to freeze over!!! sounds crazy, and my only problem is whether to do bar-b-q pork chops or burgers on the grill tonite:rolleyes2:...Sammy

One of my greatest revelations was learning that you can lean out the upper windows with a leaf blower and clean the gutters out in about 1/1000th the time and aggravation it takes to do it by hand. You also feel like a bad arse with all the noise and chaos created in your house by a leaf blower running at max power while you waive it out an open window. It might work for the roof snow. At the very least it will give your neighbors something to ponder.

Gotta love the weather forecasters. First they said 4-8 inches, then 3-5, so we ended up with 12 inches. Another week of sub-normal temps coming up. I am ready for spring. -- Al
