The Glory of Rome (2 Viewers)

..... I'm really wondering what the other two lines will be that are still to come this year ^&confuse . It's getting to the point of and I hate to say it too much of a good thing . I'm hoping with the expansion into more ranges the pace of releases will slow a bit leaving me able to keep up .
The Glory of Rome has certainly got me fired up ^&grin .. its cool that the quality of First Legion's products has been able to get you interested in learning about another period . Like most life long History nuts i find my interest in different periods goes in cycles with some new things coming in from time to time .. I can't wait to see this line develop .. Regards Gebhard
Welcome aboard another line Sammy.

I have already reached the too much point in even my favorite line. It is not that there aren't many more things I want but rather I can't even afford the things they currently have that I want. Funny it hasn't been that long ago that you could buy everything they produced with not much difficultly. FL, YOU have come a long way baby.{sm4}

I have always been attracted to Rome so this line will add to the joy and challenge but no doubt it will be a strong number 2 for me.

Seeing this will be my first time collecting FL I was wondering what the norm for releases are? The website said towards the end of April the Romans would be available for pre-order. Obviously the Romans have not been released yet so I was wondering if this was common practice for the pre-orders to run a little late from time to time?

As a rule of thumb for me I always add ten days or so and that way I don't get to worked up and it always seems to be about right ( don't tell Matt ):wink2:. So I figure the last day of April plus ten days .... I'd be surprised if there is no new word by say May the 10th or thereabouts .. Regards Gebhard

I suppose I can hold out a little longer :rolleyes2: I have a lot of great diorama ideas in my head that I have been thinking about for a little over a month now. Time to stop thinking about them and start putting them together.

Was really looking forward to these, but having recently purchased the Stalingrad A sFH 150mm Howitzer detailed plastic gun and five figures inc postage for $500, now realize the 54mm/1/30 scale clearly stated on the site, for whatever reason, is noticeably smaller when placed next to my TG, CS & K&C 1/30 scale and do not blend in. What a pity because the gun and figures are fine for their scale, but do not fit with my collection. I will sell the figures and retain the gun and hope it will not look to 'outer' place with the upcoming CS prime mover. I am sure this post will not deter dedicated FL fans, nothing wrong with the product, just my error in thinking 1/30 was basically the same across all makers. I was hoping to combine these exciting looking Romans with my existing K&C Ancient Egypt & Romans, now realize in advance, it will not work. This is purely my experience and is not meant to cause any resentment, no one is at fault, just one of those things that did not work out for me. Thought it might be helpful for those that maybe intending to mix and match with other brands, I guess these are truly 54mm 1/30 as correctly stated and my collection must be 60mm 1/30. Cheers, Robin.

The WW2 figures I have don't mix at all well with K&C, TGM (unless maybe for some perspective photos), but the Crusaders are bigger and do mix well. I don't know which category the Romans will fall into.

If the Romans should turn out to be the same in size as my existing figures, as a army builder, lookout, I want them. Will have to wait to see if someone will be good enough to display against other brands when they are released, before I can dive in. Cheers, Robin.

Hi Robin ,
Sorry to hear of your dilemma , there is a whole section on scale at First legions web site to prevent such problems . Here is a picture from the site to that shows the differences .

I think the difference is pretty clear in regards to size , sculpting detail , painting detail and finish . Its interesting for me to see how different people react to seeing these differences in the flesh.... Cheers Gebhard

First Legion figures are true 1:30 scale....And yes They don't mix well with other manufactuers who are producing probably 1:28 and painted un-naturally (toy like style)...(see prior post#148)....For me I collect First Legion because they are the best sculpted/painted figures out there today with "ultimate realism"....I don't want to miss out on FL's excellent products because they "don't match".....Therefore I have shifted my collecting habits....It all depends on which direction you want to take your collection.....My personal philosophy is don't miss a "great thing" by being handcuffed to a "lesser style".

Hello Robin-

well, not sure if you own any CS sets but they are somewhat large even compared to KC so I regret to say, unless they scale back the size of the Prime Mover, you are going to have an oversized MG34 sitting next to an 18 wheeler. :redface2::redface2:

Take heart my friend, all is not lost, sounds like FL has had some sizing issues (ie- Crusaders) too so perhaps these will work better for you- the Romans. I am guessing that they will be smaller though as there really isn't anyone actively producing Romans at the larger KC size.

That being said, I do believe you could pose FL Romans (is smaller sized) with East of India ones just fine. My KC Romans are a complete head taller than EoI's figures. Of course, the earlier KC figures were smaller so maybe you want to hit ebay and get them???

I will be happy to post my figures when I get them if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Thanks Gebhard, that's exactly the size of my problem. Thank you for posting, no need to get into a debate about scales further, they are what they are, each to their own. Cheers, Robin.

I could imagine the delay of the pre-order might be caused by the shields. When the announcement of this range was made, Matt was still experimenting with how to do the shields. Apparently, the cost for having each shield to be hand painted was prohibitive. I wonder what the final technical solution and the artistic result is going to be.

I can imagine, make one single shield is not big deal, but reproduce the same pattern many times with the same precision is a huge task....{eek3}

I believe East of India used some kind of transfer or sticker to affix to their shields. Not sure so don't quote me on that. I seem to recall being told that there is some kind of solution out there which allows uniformity of shield emblems.

I talked to Matt recently and it appears the shield dilemma has been resolved so I don't believe the shields are the tie up.

I think the information you are getting is not quite correct Chris. I have seen the FL Crusaders and they look like the other FL figures to me. None of these are the larger K&C size and rather match the size of the Britains matt figures I have. They would also match the old Conte Romans, which according to Mike are just a tad larger than the new Conte Romans. The EoI Romans are much too small for the current FL figure size (or for just about anything I am afraid to say).

I have 37 FL AWI figures and one FL ACW figure (CSA NCO) and they all match extremely well with my WB ACW figures . . . .
:smile2: Mike

I hope shields are going to be hand painted. Decals look often too perfect and are a quick fix in my book. I do much prefer something more unique... And romans shields were painted by hand and not by a machine...

Alex, you have a good memory. ;). :D

Love the mounted Legate and wounded Roman set. Two more must get pieces by FL. This has the potential of being a great line! Keep up the good work!
