The Olympics (2 Viewers)

I just watched the women’s gold metal match in badminton, which I didn’t even know was an Olympic sport, between China and Taiwan, which China won in a great match. It has a lot of features of tennis, great volleying, overhead smashes and quick net play. It was pretty exciting, with a lot of passion. I’d probably watch it again but the likelihood of finding it, except at the Olympics, is remote.

I remember watching kids play Shuttlecock when I was young, it seemed to float over the net even when we hit it hard. Obviously we played with 'lightweight versions' as the professional players smash the heck out of that Shuttlecock, travels around 200 mph apparently.

Passion mate we do OK for a country of 25+ mill.

They showed a story of him and that swimmer, they had some footage of one of her training sessions where he was berating her pretty good, pushing, pushing, pushing.

I've had a lot of coaches in my life with various sports and I found those sort of coaches to be off putting; you get more with honey than vinegar, you don't have to berate me to get your point across, some people react in a negative way from that sort of "coaching" and they get turned off to the sport.

I'm happy for the swimmer, she won two golds.

Him; not so much.

How about the Belarus approach to coaching ?

You criticise the country or your coach you get escorted back home to a gulag.

Biles is returning to competition........................Who cares let us talk about the competitors that didn't quit and blame mental health it's an excuse for too much nowadays, how about lack of ticker!!!

She beat the greatest female swimmer of all time and most medals at an Olympics so not bad for the Aussie swimmer.

Gotta agree with you there

Major yawn about Biles

It is the Olympic games not the local high school fund raiser.

US women's soccer team lost to...................................Canada?

Didn't know the Canadians had a womens soccer team.

Gee, what do you know.

No gold for the US Women.

Gee, what a shame.

Ok then.

Saw the video yesterday of the gold medal ceremony of men’s double badminton where Taiwan took the gold and China the silver. It was a real tension convention. On Chinese social media people were complaining as they don’t want to lose to Taiwan or Hong Kong in anything.

They couldn’t have been happy today as Indonesia took the gold medal in women’s doubles. From what I read badminton is the favorite sport in Indonesia.

Canada has a good team. They hosted the World Cup in 2015.

The US team got old. I think half their players are in their 30s. You knew something was off when they lost to Sweden 3-0. This was not the same team that dominated the WC in 2019. Then it was a question of how much they would win by, not whether they would win.

Today are the men’s soccer semis.

watching track and field, US men and women doing well.

I love how there are Americans representing other countries; easier path than trying to get on a stacked American team.

I watched a little bit today of the women’s double match. There was some lightning quick volleys at the net. Pretty impressive.

George,
Canada's WNT has been a solid competitor for many years, captained by the seemingly ageless Christine Sinclair. Little by little they have become more well rounded, deeper and dangerous with quality at all levels. Players like Buchanan, Scott, Schmidt (DNP), Huitema(DNP), and Chapman are fierce competitors who exemplify the spirit if the club. When they're on, they are a formidable unit. I'm not surprised by today's result.

At least China allows their athletes to compete against Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Contrast that with what I have read about Iran (and other countries) and it’s cowardly forfeits against Israeli athletes and I can’t help but at least acknowledge China’s competitiveness.

Hong Kong is part of China so they do not compete in the Olympics and China does not permit Taiwan to compete as Taiwan. Instead it is called Chinese Taipei and the Taiwan national anthem cannot be played because China views Taiwan as part of China. It’s a fraught relationship.

It is an odd one, the Chinese relationship. I do agree about Iran, what a stain on the World that place is. Good Lord. I still truly believe their leaders and lots of those in charge there are pure evil.TD

Incorrect. Hong Kong does have its own team and are currently 36th on the medals table with 1 gold and 2 silver.

Obviously cut a deal with the Olympics organisation as part of the original one country two systems agreement.

Thanks for the correction. That will probably last as long as they have to maintain HK as a separate entity.

2047, 50 years after 1997 agreement. I think they will keep to that for Olympics but no comment on other aspects of the agreement{sm2}
