You both are right (Doug and you), that said, I also have the ridiculous gun control laws that are just idiotic also. End of day, we will naturally over time vacate the State, I will incur air conditioning costs, but oh well, if my wife has her way Florida it is and you have the ocean. If I have mine about 25 acres, German Shepherd (malinois) and a good old Colt. Either way I can live with it!

I would have thought Maryland had less crime than Florida, I suspect my uniformed opinion has been influenced by historic viewings of Miami Vice, Narcos etc.

I would have thought Maryland had less crime than Florida, I suspect my uniformed opinion has been influenced by historic viewings of Miami Vice, Narcos etc.

I understand Florida is popular with retirees, same with Queensland, most Aussies prefer South Queensland to North Queensland which experiences too much rainfall/humidity, Tropical cyclones (Hurricanes), plus angry Crocodiles etc. Significant differences partly due to Queensland being a large state, 12 times larger than Florida.

Couldn't take the yr long heat and humidity in Florida, and missed a change of seasons, so we moved out as soon as I retired. Retirees living there from the northern states think they've died and gone to heaven.

must respectfully disagree. Texas Government is a large part of my job, they are one of the friendliest governments to development around. The Counties typically run tight ships and in general are very good to deal with. Lot more sophisticated than the national news lets on. They are in no comparison to California where I honestly turn clients away. I don't want to be part of any business in that State b/c in all sincerity, the feeling of slime is hard to get rid of. I say this with 30 years of doing what I have been doing. Texas has provided me a very nice life and I am very grateful. I also feel and again with all sincerity very good about the projects I have located in Texas over that time, I have had only one that failed after 7 years (I would still argue it was a win).

Again, if I never go back to California, I will be ok with it on a business level. Of course, always happy to visit friends for a short period of time! When I land in Texas, I am usually smiling, remember when I land in California, I am usually checking my return flight to see if there is an earlier one out!

I am one of the few who hate cold weather, just not worth it to me. I am not a fan of Miami either, so that would not be my Florida destination! All cities essentially "Suck" to me and they are never going to be my destination. Honestly, there is a lot I will miss about Maryland more likely than not, but I can guarantee you on April 15th of every year, at some point, it will be a distant memory!

But statistics will show you where people are moving due to this FOX-fueled competition. (I substitute a U for the O for that network).
The politics in each state are sure to change in 50 years, not that I'll be around. As I've said, I love my own country best. As The King of England (may have) said to John Adams, "An honest man will never have any other." Loyalty above politics. Even over money.
We get temps over 100 F and below -20 every year so don't complain about weather! It's a rule here - one that I break in the dead of winter.
Tom: We love you. You are boon to our Hobby and a proper businessman. I think Texans like Abbot and so he should be governor now. Other states like other politicians. So be it. $200 bourbon and FL insurance rates ain't cheap either!

Honestly, my business is apolitical, I have done many deals on both sides of the aisle and in Texas, it is not really that big of a deal when it comes to local Counties. Yes, they have statewide fights as every other State does, but it is a different universe on the city and county level. End of the day, either the development I represent is a good fit or it isn't. Funny thing, all of my clients projects nowadays are in the 250M - $1B number, produces a lot of local ad valorem tax revenue, blue or red, they all like the color green!

$200 bourbon is worth it........usually! Honestly, I have not found a bourbon I really hate regardless of price. Insurance stinks everywhere, some parts of Florida, it is actually cheaper..........b/c they won't insure you!

Don't be too hard on Fox, they are playing a winning hand right now as all of those networks survive on ratings. They found a combo that works for them. Crazily enough, not sure if you saw what is happening at CBS, they are laying off like crazy due to poor financials, it truly is that, not ideology as some would think. There are a lot of really good newspeople losing their jobs. Television is a funny business, my son is in it, he chose wisely thus far, but one day it could easily be him.

Paddy, I really enjoy the hobby regardless of what I sell too. I love history and have always gravitated towards toy soldiers since I was 4. My grandfather and step uncle were/are very national successful auctioneers, so my hobby business must have come from that. If I did it full time, not too sure how successful I would be as I like most of the "inventory".

Booze bucks should not be questioned! Seriously, a discerning pallet is essential. That and general sobriety.
I agree about Fox, just sad how they target our state. I believe firmly in freedom of speech. Thanks for helping our Hobby so much. Chicago needs to draw more businesspeople like yourself. Somehow...

Hard to find the perfect climate, humidity sucks but so does cold weather. I like the thought of a snowy winter, living in a cabin in the woods, hunting etc but know from limited experience that I can't handle truly cold weather, same as most Aussies. I have only seen snow once in my life, I'm too used to heat and unlikely to move to a cold climate in my late years, have found old age and cold weather don't go well together.

I have lived in and visted a lot of places in Australia, imo South East Coastal Queensland provides the best of everything; climate, economy, politics, scenery, living conditions etc. I have considered moving to our state capital Brisbane to be closer to friends and family but with over 2.5 million people it's a bit busy for my taste, but you never know what the future may bring.

In the the climate/weather vs. politics battle I can say that one is in our control the other isn’t.

As difficult as it might be we can change the political climate in California by voting and activism.

There is no way I can vote to change the actual climate/weather in Texas.
