11th January 1879 – The Natal border with Zululand.

The Bates family have been warned by local Boer neighbours of a probable Zulu attack in the next few days and they prepare to leave their farm.

Bert Bates never realised how much furniture and “knick-knacks” his wife Vera had accumulated over the 20 years of their marriage….until he had to carry it from the farmhouse to be loaded in their ox drawn wagons. He keeps his rifle and sword close to hand

Aunt Nell, carrying the parasol, had just arrived for a long holiday, she was not expecting to move back to the City so soon. Her two sisters Vera and Nell, with their daughters and sons watch the proceedings with some alarm, the children seem to take it in their stride.

Win’s husband Len Rowe checks the axle connection on a rear wagon wheel watched by his son David

At last a patrol from the 24th Foot stationed at the Rorke’s Drift Mission Station arrive to provide protection for the move

Cheers
