Welcome to the Deep Freeze (5 Viewers)

LARRY!

God Lawd...-54 degrees. Ugh...Mike is right about 100 degree difference as in colder, as we around 50-54. Unbelievable! That was cold blooded when BLReed sent that link to Florida real estate. But, I 'm with you on the alligators. My wife wants to retire there and I see the videos on youtube of alligators showing up in your backyard or in your pool. I would be absolutely terrified. Those dudes are no joke.

Did you ever read the story of The Battle of Ramree Island? Ugh...just awful!

Larry man, I don't know how you do it, but I just can't do the cold. I got a heated Makita Jacket for our "winter"...it is pretty slick.

Evening John,
Not as bad tonight as the temps are up to -9 degrees and the wind is not blowing much. So that translates to a wind chill of -28 degrees or so. My wife has high school friends that have retired to Florida and have sent her photos and videos of those "monsters" crawling up onto her back yard from the ponds and canals. Strange thing ... she told us that .... THEY CAN NOT SHOOT OR HARM THEM.

I guess they are protected. Can you image if a family member is caught between the house and that beast and all you can do is say ... "shoo, leave, get outa' here or I make you into a handbag ....{sm2} Ya' right!

Well, as George says,, crank up the Propane gas stoves, drink hot chocolate or tea, curl up with a good book or movie or play with your soldiers. (However picking then up with BIG MITTENS is a bit of a problem ....:wink2:)

Totally agree with you George, I live in a warm, tropical environment and I'm tired of the constant sweating during the very hot months. I have to crank up the air conditioning and stay in the house all day or visit my gym, shopping centres/movies etc with A/C. I enjoy when I travel to places that have colder climates as I can get some relief for a period. Someday i'll move to a colder climate and retire there!

I've never been to Darwin, have heard from others the humidity there is worse than anywhere else in Australia. Back in 1980's when I was single, and even more stupid, I lived in the New England region of New South Wales. Which has some of the coldest towns in Australia, including Guyra, where I lived for 18 months (seemed a lot longer). Guyra "boasts" the Highest Caravan Park in Australia and the dodgy rental place I lived in with a few mates had no heating. Ok, it had a fireplace (and a mates motorbike) in the lounge-room but we used to throw our empty beers cans in the fireplace, and it was way too much trouble for young guys to clean up the fireplace and buy some wood. That would be way too sensible. Btw my motorbike was usually parked in the Kitchen to keep it out of the cold weather, did a few burnouts on the Lino...good times ha ha. Anyway it got so cold there some nights the water in the toilet bowl used to freeze solid and even the shampoo bottle had ice in it. No doubt it's much colder in Northern US but houses up there are better equipped for cold weather. That early experience cured me from living in colder climates, I now live on the Sunshine Coast, about 1 hour North of Brisbane. It's more like Subtropics here, humidity is tolerable, and there are no Crocodiles or Cyclones this far South ^&cool

Just reached 0 Fahrenheit in my backyard, 12 miles North of Boston. Painfully cold. Especially when you have arthritis. My Left hand hasn't been able to do anything for a week. I need help getting dressed.

I would love to have it reach ZERO degrees. Currently, sitting at -18 degrees in Waldoboro, Maine.
{eek3}

I understand the arthritis issue as I also have to battle deal with stiff fingers and joints. I haven't button my shirt since the temps dropped.
Thank God for zippers!

A few years ago when my son was attending a program out near the Utah Nevada border, which involved camping out in the dead of winter, we went to visit him. Getting there was not easy. You traveled on roads that weren't anything more than dead roads and if you didn't have a four by four you were in trouble. The area was desolate, except for the occasional wild horse (which, we were told, you didn't often see). As we drove there, the temperatures hovered around 3 degrees. Fortunately, it was a sunny day so when we got to the campsite, the sun made it seem as if it was in the mid teens, but when the sun went down, my god, was it cold, somewhere around 5 below and that was considered a warm day. Although we had great sleeping bags, the best you could have, it was hard to sleep in that cold; my glasses iced up. That was as cold as I've ever felt but it was a great experience.

Just came in from clearing snow off the driveway, front sidewalk, and back steps. Thank goodness for Marmot outerwear and a John Deere snow blower. We are having a warm day today. Currently its 11F with an expected high of 12F. Although its 11F the wind chill factor makes it feel like its only 5F . . . . . Expected low today is -7F . . . .
:smile2: Mike

I have a Marmot, nothing like it. Very light but incredibly warm.

Its hard to beat Marmot outerwear . . . I love mine and consider it to be essential winter weather gear along with a pair of fleece insulated Sorel boots . . .

Oh HELL NO! If one of those alligators rolled up in my back yard, I would be blasting first. There is no "here kitty, kitty" with those guys. If I got in trouble and they threw me in the clink...fine, bail me out, but there is no negotiating with those guys.

LARRY! Stay warm man,

Mid 80s today.

That's awesome Sammy, be sure to post pictures later this Summer when it's 130, but it's ok as it's a dry heat.......................again, I'll deal with a cold snap here and there in exchange for four actual seasons as in spring, summer, fall, winter.........we got snow here Christmas eve and there's nothing better than waking up on the 25th to a blanket of white, that combined with the decorations and the tree all lit up was something special, hard to do that when it's 80 degrees out.

Call me crazy, but my Dad had something to do with that as I had a tough time getting into the spirit this year, the snow on Christmas morning did the trick, so thanks Pops.

New Years Day here will be 9 degrees with the wind chill taking it below zero, a good day to rest and recoup after what will be happening at the party we're going to tomorrow, starting with football during the day...............so there you go.

My goodness, didn't realize a pic of a palm tree would raise blood pressures, but you're right George nothing like a white Xmas, the 60s, 70s have been a nice break from this past Summer's heat. Night lows have even seen a few 30s!!!!

Now that is cold Terry!{sm2} It hasn't been cold like that since the '70's. We used to watch people drive trucks on Manhasset Bay (off Long Island Sound) when I was a kid growing up, and we played pond hockey every winter. I don't think anyone has skated on a pond around here since I moved back up here from Texas in the early 1990's.:redface2: But it was plenty cold this morning when I let the dogs out, 14 degrees with a wind chill of about 5 degrees.

I hate the cold and hate 4 seasons. Would rather have spring, fall, summer, you can take winter and shove it. As soon as we are able to move to the next phase of our life, Maryland and the winters will be a distant memory other than keeping the family shore house on the Ocean! We will retire South at some point, once I can retire and my son has cleared College. I would not be upset if I never see a snowflake again!

UPDATE:

The latest local weather has issues a "Wind Chill Warning" for tonight.

Temps with the high wind will reach (or drop to) -45 degrees below ZERO.

Tonight you keep the furnace running, water running in all the sinks, fireplaces stoked .... and generally no sleep tonight as you got to keep a watch full eye on things ...{sm2} :redface2:

Wow Larry, I didn't know about all these 'extras' required in cold snaps, not to mention your recent wind storm. Aren't you tempted to move mate :wink2: ^&grin

Happy New Year, Matt.

True that (very) cold weather presents a problem and must be attended to or the results will be more effort to repair than the prevention.

However, most of these events are few AND far between and can be handled with a minimum amount of effort. Okay, I got a disruptive sleep a couple of nights ago, but that is far better that then the $1000's of dollar damage if pipes should burst. And I simply napped that afternoon which was very enjoyable! {sm4}

As has been said in this thread (and I would assume others) every region has its environmental issues, but I consider my "cold" issue FAR, FAR less of a disaster than most I hear about.

A cold night or two is far more palatable than hurricanes, wild fires, mud slides, drought, earthquakes, floods, typhoons, tsunamis, stifling heat and humidity.

So my friend, I will stay in New England and put on a extra pair of long johns and woolly socks.

Anyway things are already warming up. It is a -8 degrees with a gentle wind.

TIME TO GET OUT THE LAWN CHAIRS AND BBQ ... after I shovel the 3 feet of snow on my back deck. ^&grin
