Welcome to the Deep Freeze (2 Viewers)

The severe cold is going to continue into the new year here. Several days now of sub zero weather with dangerous wind chill advisories. Low for tonight and tomorrow night will be below zero with wind chills expected between -25F and -31F. We plan on having a very quiet NYE at our home tonight, nice and warm and cozy . . . .

Late next week it’s supposed to be in the minus numbers around here.

I am in California right now where it is 60 degrees. I am headed to Wisconsin on Tuesday for a business trip. The temperature there today was 1 degree and when I land it is supposed to be -6.

Happy New Year, Matt.

True that (very) cold weather presents a problem and must be attended to or the results will be more effort to repair than the prevention.

However, most of these events are few AND far between and can be handled with a minimum amount of effort. Okay, I got a disruptive sleep a couple of nights ago, but that is far better that then the $1000's of dollar damage if pipes should burst. And I simply napped that afternoon which was very enjoyable! {sm4}

As has been said in this thread (and I would assume others) every region has its environmental issues, but I consider my "cold" issue FAR, FAR less of a disaster than most I hear about.

A cold night or two is far more palatable than hurricanes, wild fires, mud slides, drought, earthquakes, floods, typhoons, tsunamis, stifling heat and humidity.

So my friend, I will stay in New England and put on a extra pair of long johns and woolly socks.

Anyway things are already warming up. It is a -8 degrees with a gentle wind.

TIME TO GET OUT THE LAWN CHAIRS AND BBQ ... after I shovel the 3 feet of snow on my back deck. ^&grin

Happy New Year to you Larry. Good to know it's not so bad in your New England Region ^&grin I wasn't fond of the cold weather in 'Aussie' New England back in the 80's. However there were some upsides: plenty of trout in the streams, cooler weather for motor bike rides (leather gear in Hot weather is no fun), and Autumn colours in the countryside, a rare change from Gum Trees, and the girls seemed 'warmer' :wink2:

Bundle up . . . . prepare to dress in layers . . . . Its frigid cold here right now. The air temps will be as you said, about -6F, however the wind chill factor throughout the day will make it seem 2 to 3 times colder. Where in Wisconsin are you going to be? I live in the Madison area . . . .

Thanks for the tip! Luckily I will not be outside much, except for walking from the car service to the door of the hotel!

I will be in Madison.

Stupid question but how is the airport in Madison? Is it small and easy to navigate?

It's cold here in Delaware, but have been spared any deep snow. Had 4 clippers come through dumping only 1-3 inches. CBS today suggested weather supposed to continue frigid for another week, and then moderate. We'll see how if that's reality.

Happy New Year. As I write this (8:30 am) it is currently -13F with a windchill of -28F. I live about 15 minutes from downtown Madison. You are going to be flying into a deep freeze compared to what you are used to in California. If you have to spend any time outside be prepared to protect your fingers, ears, and nose from the windchill . . . .

Madison's airport is a medium size airport with only one concourse . . . . very easy to navigate through.

If your schedule would allow it, you are more than welcome to visit my home and see my TS collection . . . . .

Amazing how it’s relative. It’s -7 today in Vermont. Minimal wind and the sun is shining! Feels warmer than yesterday which was only -1!

It's winter, some winters are colder than others. Oh and when we get to July and August it will be hot. Man has adapted and survived thru the ages, get over it.

Mike:

In Texas it can get down to the teens (18 or 19) but that is about as cold as I ever experience on a consistent basis. Here in California (where I am leaving from) anything below 40 is headlines news, I rarely even turn on the heater when I am here. So you are correct I am definitely not used to anything below 15 degrees and certainly no negatives! Thanks for the clothing tip, I thing I have the gear to survive outside for 5 minutes at a time.

Great news on the airport, especially coming from the insanity of O'Hare where I have a 3 hour layover. Good thing I brought the latest collectors mags and catalogs from K&C and Britain's, I can kill the time by reading in the United lounge.

Last but not least thank you so much for the invitation to see your collection. If I have the time I would love to see it.

I will be in touch.

Best,
Jason

-19...
can that actually happen?
don't know how you guys do it...

Yeah, want to complain, but I can't....Well, I can....This is South Texas this isn't suppose to happen!

Okay, I'm done...time to warm up and psych up for Friday. Forecast predicts low will be 41 degrees.

Yep, there's only 2 things I miss about California: "family" and "GREAT WEATHER!!!"

Okay, everyone...Hope everyone has a Happy 2018 New Year's and much prosperity, great health and joy.

Back in Boston after the week in Vermont. Never thought I’d rejoice at single digits!!!

I was in Tucson over the holidays where it was a balmy 75 with clear skies. Got back to -7 this morning. So cold that if you went out for more than a few seconds without gloves your fingers would feel numb. No wind though. I almost don't care how cold it gets so long as the wind isn't blowing.

ZB...(sigh)...and all my East Coast brothers,

Apparently there is some sort of creeped out storm coming your way that is supposed to drop copious amounts snow, lotcus and misery on a biblical scale. I'm talking about a storm of epic porportions. Is is the NOR-EASTA? I don't know, but it is supposed to be bad.

Sooooooooooooooo,

Boston is supposed have a super blizzard, NY may be shut down and the rest of you East Coast Mafiosos had better get prepared for the WORST. Get your food, water, back up fuel for the generators and what ever else you got to do to get ready for "the big one".

I am worried for y'all,

John from Texas

Thanks for the concern, John, but we New Endlanders' are getting ready.

The snow amount is not the real issue. Waldoboro is looking at 12" to 14" but that is no real issue. The fear is the "WIND" with gusts up to 60 MPH. That equates to downed power lines and no electricity.

So that means no heat, water(for some); cooking and food (for some) and damage to homes by downed trees. After the storm the temps are going to plummet to -10 to -15 degrees. If you have no power then you are up the (famous) creek with no paddle ...{sm2}

I do have heat and power alternatives so I'm not to worried ....unless the power goes out for a week or more.

Good luck to all my fellow East Coast collectors and friends and thank you John.

Take care guys, maybe time to buy a generator if you don't already have one {eek3}

After we had a hurricane four years ago we purchased one. It wasn’t cheap and we haven’t had to use it too much but we are prepared, just in case.

Hunker down gentlemen this one is going to suck! We are supposed to get about 12 inches, and the wind gusts could leave us without power. I have no generator, but I have three working fireplaces and a good supply of firewood!
