What else do you collect beside toy soldiers (1 Viewer)

I guess good things come in threes . . . I have been after a WWI Russian Tunic and Cap for some time now, and on the rare occasions when an authentic one has become available, the price made my eyes water. Today I checked out a militaria dealer in Great Britain that Tim Tyler had been kind enough to recommend, and lo and behold, a 1914 Imperial Russian Cossack Fur Cap, for less than 100 British Pounds:

Just purchased five Israeli bayonets from the War of Independence, including two EXTREMELY rare variants that I have only ever read about. I am now only two knives away from owning every knife ever produced by Zionist/Israeli armed forces.

Louis, I’ve always wondered, are the uniforms laundered? I was always concerned with bidding online that they might get to me smelling? It’s whats always stopped me.

Once in a while you get one with a mothball smell to it, but you just leave it to air out for a while and it goes away. I once got a pith helmet that had been sealed in its original tin case with moth balls for probably 100 years, and it took weeks for the smell to air out of it, but it eventually did.{sm4}

My interest in collecting North American prehistoric artifacts, especially from the Ohio River Valley, has always been strong . . . perhaps more so than collecting historical miniatures. Here is a pic of six of my frames (each are 24" x 12"). L-R top row: Early Adena blades, Adena Cache blades, Late Adena blades. L-R bottom row: Adena style slate pendants, Fort Ancient artifacts, and Adena slate gorgets. The ribbons shown are awards I have received at Badger State Archaeological shows and meetings where I have had my collection on display.

I'm having some crazy luck lately, first I get the cap, and now I find the rest of a 1918 French Algerian Spahi or Zouave Uniform:

It turns out that the French Algerian Zouave uniform is for a drummer boy, and I managed to find this French WWI military field drum, complete with the harness and sticks, and I bought a child sized dummy to display the whole kit on. More photos once everything has arrived.

I came across this photo, hoping it was of an officer in the 79th New York (Highland Guard), but it turns out to be of an officer in the 1st Maine Volunteer Light Infantry, who also adopted a Highland uniform:

Interesting. I didn't know that any unit other than the 79th wore Highland dress during the Civil War. Thanks for sharing.

Brendan,

I had no idea either. Here is a photo of the back of the card. It shows it was taken by a studio in Portland, Maine, and identified the sitter as a member of the 1st Maine Volunteer Light Infantry. I have never seen another photo of a member of this regiment before. Here is the item description from the Militaria dealer I bought it from on Ruby Lane:

Scarce cdv photograph of a Civil War Soldier from the 1st Maine Battalion Light Infantry. This was a Scottish Infantry according to Maine records. This soldier is dressed in full garb and certainly decked out for the photographer. One can see he has blazing red hair and is also armed. Portrait was taken by George M.Howe of 112 Middle Street in Portland.
