What else do you collect beside toy soldiers (1 Viewer)

I thought you guys might get a kick out of the biggest toy soldier I ever bought: it’s cast metal, made in France in the 1870’s, and represents a Zouave. As you can see it’s around 2 feet tall, and I displayed it with my matching Zouave uniform and put a Toy Soldier of a 5th New York Zouave in his hand.

Now that's what I call a toy soldier! Really neat. -- Al

That's very cool. Chris

I just picked up this Franco-Prussian War French Officer’s Tunic (I have a matching Steiff Doll and some First Legion figures that match as well:

Louis, whenever I see those old uniforms, I always think how much skinnier people were back then, than today.

The Franco Prussian War tunic and pants arrived, and are on the mannequin. Waiting on the Kepi and Epaulets to complete the display:

Excellent point. Being overweight is the norm, now. At least in the US. And we wonder why health care costs are spiraling out of control.

The kepi arrived!

I picked up these gunpowder pouches from a black powder era British Warship. I have them displayed with a 19th Century US Navy signal canon and a canon ball dug up in Gettysburg:

As you can see from the Steiff Reference Book Photo, my Steiff WWI Uhlan was originally equipped with a cavalry saber. I recently found what was either a 19th Century Child's Toy Saber or perhaps an old letter opener. I bought it, and now my Steiff Uhlan is armed:

That's really neat, Louis. He is the typical wasp-waist Prussian with the monocle. Great get. -- Al

Both the Prussian Lieutenant (which is one of the larger Steiff Soldiers, about 18 inches tall) and the Austrian Infantryman (which is the smallest Steiff Doll I have ever seen, about 6 inches tall) arrived today. Some Photos of these soldiers, and some others they are displayed with:

Your Prussian lieutenant reminds me of contemporary caricatures, Louis, that lampooned the typical Junker of the time, with that look-tall, thin, with a long face and nose. I've seen postcards and magazine illustrations with similar pictures. Some bore more than a passing resemblance to Crown Prince Willy, too.

Prost!
Brad
