What else do you collect beside toy soldiers (1 Viewer)

Nice house Louis, yes dampness can cause some issues, especially for clothing. My collection is in my converted single garage, all except for the Lancaster which is in the lounge room as I've previously mentioned.
My wife and I are planning on redoing our two car garage as a carriage house, with a second floor intended as a game room for my kids and their friends. Maybe I can display some of my less fragile collectibles like uniforms in the new game room once it’s constructed.

The carriage house conversion is a great idea. My car is parked under a double carport at the back of my house which provides enough protection as we have a mild climate here. However there are some corrosion issues as an estuary is next to my front fence and the ocean is about 300 metres from the carport at the back. I guess you get snow where you are and cars would need to be garaged.

I would still be able to park the Jeeps on the bottom floor of the new carriage house, we would just be putting carriage house style doors on the garage, and adding a second floor when we rebuild the old garage, to give it the appearance of the carriage house that would have been there 175 years ago when the house was built.

I see, I hope to see some photos of the build in due course. It only seems like yesterday you posted the photos of your attic build. It was the first time I'd ever heard of a 'banquette' let alone seen one ^&grin

I managed to pick up a 1916 Harwin Spahi doll, wearing the Spahi cape and jacket I have on display in my collection (note the spurs on the doll's boots:

I managed to obtain my second "Tenue de Campaign" doll, sold through a French Military Museum commemorating WW1 in the 1930's, another, slightly different Poilu (they made many different French Soldiers, including an amazing Zouave, as well as soldiers of most other nations involved in the conflict):

The Harwin Spahi Doll arrived and is on display with an authentic period Spahi uniform (the gilet [vest] for the uniform arrived today but hasn't been put on the mannequin yet, I haven't been able to find the light blue sarouel [baggy pants] needed to complete the uniform yet):

Here is the WWI Spahi uniform with the gilet (vest) added tucked into the dark blue sash. Now I just need to find a medium or light blue Sarouel (the baggy pants they wear) to complete the uniform.

I found a WWI Austrian blanketroll and straps, which is almost identical to the German blanketrolls, so I mounted it on my German Infantryman, to better match the Steiff German Infantryman Doll:

Louis,

Love the steiff figures they are amazing! But your Spanish American war gent is Artillery by the color of his hat cord. Infantry wore a blue one. Still amazing that they are in such fine condition after so many years.

Dave,

Thanks for the information. The Steiff reference for the Spanish American War doll reads "Sharkey 35, field equipment, knapsack, rifle (some dolls came without the field equipment and rifle), American Soldier." Because it could come with field equipment and a rifle, I thought it was an infantryman. I actually have an authentic hat with the orange hat cord and tunic which I display with the doll, and always thought it was infantry equipment.

I got this from an online militaria dealer in France. It comes with the French army marked backpack (with a cloth bucket hanging from it) a folded tent section strapped to it, cooking pots/plates/cups strapped to it, inside are tent pegs and cords. I put it with my WWI French 1914 navy blue coat, kepi and bread bag. Figuring out how to put it all together from the kit on a 14 inch tall Tenue du Campaign figure was a pain in the ***. I probably did it all wrong (I have a couple of straps left over, which I tucked inside) but it looks like the kit on the Poilu figure.

I am trying to find some WWI French Red pants, and if I do I will put everything on a full mannequin.

Hi Louis

The hat cords were all by unit type ie Cavalry being a yellow cord for enlisted and officers wearing a gold and black mixed braid. Etc. the regulations can be found by branch type. If you are interested I have copies of the cavalry regs.

Dave

PS I wear one on my hat that is an enlisted cord from that era in honor of my great great uncle who was a cavalryman in that Philippines in 02-03

Louis, you have an amazing Steiff doll (and uniform) collection. I'm sure it would be the envy of quite a few museums. About how many figs do you have? Always enjoy viewing posts of your latest find. Chris
