WW 1 Centenary Diorama (1 Viewer)

I'm stunned by everything from the details to the excellent photographs. Simply incredible.

Thanks for the pic's Jack. There's loads of detail going into this one such as the section of the trench that took a direct hit and has caved it! Awesome stuff!

Tom

Many thanks for your kind words. We were fortunate in that we had access to a Museum and to sources of funding, but the real costs - labour and figures - are not an issue given that it is a collaboration between collectors. By the time we finish there will be over ten thousand dollars worth of figures, but given that they are on loan from the diorama builders themselves, all of the money available went into the actual diorama bases.

I would recommend this type of collaboration to collectors, even if the diorama sits in someone's garage. It is an expensive hobby. Buying in bulk, buying from overseas or buying while on holiday overseas does not bring with it a significant reduction in price or in many cases, any reduction at all. As members such as Kogu and Johnnybach have shown, painting your own figures is one of the few viable ways to make the hobby more accessible to those of use who are not millionaires (Konrad and Johnny might be millionaires but my point is still valid!). This type of collaboration is another means by which value can be drawn from the hobby without outlaying a fortune. We started at ten am on Sunday (10.20 really because the coffee drinkers cannot function without a fix) and 'worked' for about four hours. The figures we placed were part of our existing collections and the materials were covered by funding, so the four of us, in total, squeezed out sixteen hours of fun at no cost. We then load up our photographs, chat with online friends about the photographs and respond to posts.

The largest single financial outlay was for the perspex covers which are necessary to provide security for the collections. A privately displayed diorama would not need them. Bob is a master at using materials that are either free or very cheap to build the bases. For example, although we did buy some foam sheets, some of our needs were met by gifts from our TS shop of the foam used by Jenkins when sending their product. Though I initially was skeptical of Bob's claim that 'anyone' can do it, his methods are viable for people like me with no experience and limited aptitude.

The only thing we could not do without a 'professional' was the photography but Marc is a Brisbane collector and he brought the first diorama to life with his photographs.

There is no better enjoyment than indulging your hobby on a grand scale such as this, if you have the room then do it. The learning process is also wonderful fun, you do not need hobby dedicated product mostly, the hardware store can provide most of your needs and just what you find in the 'backyard' can work wonders as Bob has shown us. What is the greatest part of this whole project is time spent with like minded friends having a blast and with Marc and Glen joining in it just gets better.
Wayne.

Many thanks! Once we finish the Western Front diorama we will load up some better photographs to give a sense of the terrain.

Hi Rob,

Not sure of the signifigance of April 1 departure :)...but if you locate that card, there will be a spot, or several, for lodging without expense.
Bob

More pics.

Fantastic job.....as I see these pictures, flashbacks of the Great Film " Lighthorsemen" when the Australina Light Horse Regiment conduct the last great cavalry charge in history in 1917 at the formidable line held by the Turco-German army between Gaza on the Coast to Beersheeba.....with the 800 Australian horsemen doing the impossible ....galloping their horses across three miles of open desert into a hell of shell fire and machine gun ....with bayonets in their hands ( given that the army took away the sabers....as they were mounted infantry...)....they changed the history of the Middle East....:salute:::salute:::salute::{sm0}:):)
