Britains Durbar Question (1 Viewer)

The Britains Durbar stuff is really very good. I know they lost the plote in 2003-2006 , but they did have some good sets in the late 1990's and early 2001.
My friend in Durban has the entire set. He has made a great procession. I will try and photograph it at some point and if he allows me post it on the website

Damian,

I hope your friend will allow you to post some pictures of his collection. I would love to see his procession!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Hi Damian,

It would be great to see some another collection. I am only short 2 sets from Britains and I am on the hunt for them both so it will be complete someday soon I hope.

Any other folks out there have a Durbar collection? Lets hear from you.

All the best

Dave

Hi Guys,

I have a great package on its way to me from California:) I am really quite excited about! Pat knows what the deal is so I'll spill the beans by telling you all I just picked up another Elephant from the Marlborough Line and will post some pictures when it arrives. It is set number D1 The Maharaja of Baroda on his State Elephant! I am really excited about this one!

More soon

Dave

Dave what Britains sets are you missing?

Hi jrsteel,

I am missing the Maharaja of Patiala and Escort and one more set of the Dismounted Gunners from Baroda. I just got clobbered on one of these on ebay and am still in the running on one but it will probably be a battle since I seem to acquired some rather stiff competition recently. Its half the fun though seeing if I can get if for a really good price.

Dave London Bridge Collectors Toys has the Maharaja of Patiala and Escort. I saw it there last week.

I picked up the Baroda Elephant from Hocker and a vice regal set as well, while I was at the W.C. . There was very little Durbar stuff of any line.

Hi Jrsteel,

I will probably check with them if I loose the auction I'm in right now. The price is still low enough to keep me interested so we'll see. Thanks for the tip though.

K-V lets see some pictures of the Elephant. I am not surprised that there wasnt a lot of Durbar stuff to pick from. There are a lot of dealers that carry it. Still I'm glad you were able to find some interesting sets.

All the best

Dave

Vamp,

Good man! I want to see your new elephant too! I'm glad you had a great and successful trip. I wish I could have been there, but, then again, I would probably have had to purchase an elephant too. Now wouldn't that have been a sad state of affairs?

I look forward to seeing your elephant!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Hi Pat,

Have you seen the latest photos in the Photo Gallery from a fellow named Chet Milot? He has some very good looking set ups which include Marlborough, Beau Geste and Britains. They look really good together with the back ground he did of the Red Fort. Very good work. I wonder if he ever posts on the forum? I wish he would so we get his spin on the slight sacle difference between the three companies since it looks like they mingle well in the display.

All the best

Hi Dave,

Yes, I have seen the pictures. And, yes, the figures seem to mingle well. Actually, they seem to blend better than I thought they might. I have placed my Britains Hunting Cheetahs in with some of my Beau Geste figures and while they blend okay, I am still aware of the size difference. Perhaps other people would not notice the differences so readily.

I am really pleased to see some of the older sets and some of the newer traditional style sets appear on the forum. It has been a real treat for me. Jrsteel has some really cool stuff, doesn't he?

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Hi Pat,

I too noticed the slight difference in the sizes it seems really apparent with the Buglers in State Dress but the Hunting Cheetahs seem to mingle well. It was real fun to see the Imperial Around Town Victorians mixed in too. I have some Indian Civilians but would need to add a few more of the kids and ladies to make the crowd look right. I would also love to chat with him about the back dop he constructed I want to do table top display some time but due to space constraints it will have to be whenever my wife and I settle down and I can have a bigger room that wont double as a hotel room when we have company. I have the Durbar Dias but its still boxed up and its really big and would make a great display, some day soon I hope.

I am also really impressed with the sets and singles Jrsteel and the other fellows have been posting I'm glad I decided to share that Field Marshall it has certainly caught the attention of a lot of the other guys here. Lets hope they keep posting.

Talk to you later

All the best

Dave

The only other Durbar Elephant was a Hocker Hyderabad with retinue for 315.00 .If I did not already have the Britains one I would have been broke:p

Pictures to follow as soon as I feel better.

Hi Guys,

There are several Vectis Auctions coming up that are Durbar Sets, mainly the 17th Purbiahs Band sets and at least one Elephant. Check on ebay in the soldier section, search for Durbar and they should pop right up. I figured I should let you all know since I am not going to go after any or them. I am in a race for a couple of other sets right now and I saw a very interesting one the other day that I'm watching and will let you know how they go. Wish me luck Pat!;)

Hi Pat,

Thanks I'll keep you posted. I am still waiting for the elephant and when it comes in I will post a picture for you to see. I'm also waiting for a fix for the software I mentioned the other day and may have something in the morning if not I may have another way to fix the problem and will try that so you and KV will be able to view the Catalogue I put together.

Have a great evening!

All the best

Dave

Dave, Hope your bidding is successful. I don't trust auction houses or the drop off houses. So you do not have to worry about me bidding against you.:D :D

Hi KV,

Did you have a bad experience with an auction house? I have never had any issues with auctions so I guess I'm lucky. I have to say that since the Durbar is sort of specialized even in a hobby as specialized as ours I find it difficult to get things at stores(when I can find a store) of course in So Cal I know you have some places down there not too mention the West Coaster I just wish we had something up here in Washington. I also have seen soldiers in this antiques mall area in the Gas Lamp District of San Diego but that was a long while ago and I doubt they have a regular supply. Anyway can you post some pictures of your latest acquisition form Hocker?

Oh I am also trying to get the durbar catalog put into Adobe PDF format so you can see it may have something back today, fingers crossed;)

Talk to you later

All the best

Dave

Dave apart from the sometimes extra charges of auction houses the worse aspect is that they are not responsible for the description or condition of the item (they have a disclaimer in the listing usually).

So if you get your item and it's chipped or not as described it's a case of to bad how sad. Of course the upside is that you can get things cheaper as many people don't buy from auction houses.
