Dinosaur Rant: This fad of college teams getting different uniforms on an almost weekly basis is beginning to get on my nerves. I decided to watch some of the Nebraska-Northwestern game today while waiting for the Navy game to start. I missed the whole first quarter because I scanned over the game several times, not recognizing Nebraska in BLACK or Northwestern without their purple helmets. I'm sorry, but Nebraska should be in RED. My team, UMd is one of the worst offenders, seemingly changing uniforms by the half. How's an old geezer like me (with sight and memory issues) supposed to find the game he wished to watch without traditional colors to look for? I know I could actually consult the channel listings but let's not go off the deep end here. Pick a uniform and stick to it! End of rant. -- Al

Baylor is up 35-0 and it's not even halftime while playing in a monsoon. I wonder how many points they would have scored under normal. I agree with Al on all the alternate uniforms. A gimmick. It's big business to sell jerseys so I guess having more than one variant produces money. But most of them are god awful ugly.

Navy goes to 5-1 today with a 31-14 win over Tulane. Interesting fact is it is the first game since 2010 that Navy has gained more yards via the pass than on the ground. -- Al

If you missed the 1st quarter of NU vs NU, you missed a real gem. Dropped passes...bad defense...stupid plays...it had it all.

A win is a win and Northwestern in 6-2. We stopped the bleeding and have a bye next week. I'll take it.

Well I know the reasoning for Maryland uniform changes....the owner/creator of Under Armor products is a U. of Md. grad and has the green light on all uniforms/designs/colors etc. almost as a test base it seems because some of the stuff they have worn has been right down ugly but he has also designed some nice ones to, but I'm with you Al, just give me the ol white helmet with the Red "M" on the sides, toss in Bobby Ross on the sideline and let's go back to the future in the early 80's!!!...Sammy

Bingo! Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Sammy, ironically enough, in today's loss to Penn St., UMd wore throwback unis from the early 60's. They were very basic and attractive. Red jerseys, white pants with gold/black stripes and plain white helmets with numbers on the sides. It was a classically simple design. I would love to see these worn full time. -- Al

The pundits were wrong having SC favored by three over undefeated Utah. They should have been favored by 25. A major butt kicking going on. It's about time.

Time for Padre Pete's Pathetic Picks - Take these to Vegas (flip the scores) and you're guaranteed to win!

Nebraska 28 Northwestern 10 - The 'Cat slide continues. How did they beat Stanford and Duke??? The offense has remained pathetic and the defense has regressed. Unless something happens soon this season may be headed into the crapper.

Stanford 42 Washington 21 - A team Northwestern beat will continue to flex its offensive muscle and move up in the rankings.

Duke 28 VA Tech 21 - A team Northwestern beat will continue to flex its muscles and move up in the rankings. The Dukies are underdogs, which should fire them up.

Texas A&M 21 Ole Miss 17 - What's the point of this game...neither has been influenced by Northwestern.

Utah 45 USC 10 - The Utes have a big chip on their shoulders. Everyone is showing USC love based on....what? USC is in shambles. This will be a beat-down.

Like I said, Northwestern would score 30 to beat Nebraska (hey, I got Nebraska's score right!), A&M would put up 3 against Ole Miss, and the Utah/USC game would be a beat down (just the wrong beater and beatee). {sm2}

Well, interesting day in this household to say the least, summary of my college football day:

1. Maryland - good NOT to see the Pretzel as the coach. BAD - same historical result against Penn St. NO LUCK. Good God, how many chances did Maryland want to win.

2. FSU - not much to say here except the old adage - if you let an inferior team hang around long enough, you lose. Plain and simple, Murphy's Law took over - freak interception in the end zone, followed by an incredible blocked FG as time ran out for a score. Exciting, just going the wrong way for me at least. My own take is the Offensive Line for FSU lost them the game with 5 (you read that right) False STarts in the 4th Qtr alone, Snapping on the wrong snap count on Intercept in End Zone and finally not blocking on a FG attempt. I just ask Are you kidding me? Oh well, can't win them all.

Other games - USC looked pretty mighty in the win over Utah. OHio State keeps winning, Alabama survives, Ole Miss looks like a Top 10 team this week. The parity is crazy.

Al:

I was in DC this past weekend and was able to watch some of the game. I am amazed that the Terps aren't better. There is a ton of talent in their own backyard, good recruiting in the DC area/Maryland would help with some immediate improvement.

Hi Jason,
Always been a mystery why UMd hasn't been a better program on a long term basis, considering the local talent pool. Part of the problem have been clueless AD's or AD's with an agenda that hasn't been beneficial to the various sports programs. The program has has spurts of excellence and at one time churned out pro-caliber Qb's like a factory, but that has been a while. I want to see what entry into the Big 10 does on a long term basis in terms of money into the football program. Maybe UMd can get itself a big-time HC, start drawing more of the local talent, and just up it's game in general with some Big 10 money and influence. -- Al

Watching ASU and Oregon right now, great game. It seems with work and life the only way I get to enjoy sports is extra innings (World Series game 1) or overtime (this game).

One of the lamest weeks in recent memory. Not really any great matchups this weekend but here are the picks:

Iowa 47 Maryland 10 - Iowa is better than I thought. MD looks awful some weeks and ok others. That's not enough this weekend. Could get ugly. Sorry Al.

Texas Tech 54 Oklahoma State 51 - should be a real shootout. No D. Last team to touch the ball wins.

Temple 30 Notre Dame 27 - the Owls shock the wee men.

USC 37 Cal 30 - the mighty Trojans fresh off the beatdown of Utah should take care of the Kal commies. Should be a high scoring game.

I agree, a pathetic slate this week. Thankfully Northwestern can't lose!

Iowa 28 Maryland 21- This might be closer than you expect. Iowa hasn't impressed (except in pummeling Northwestern). I think Iowa gets overconfident and has to come back to win.

Oklahoma State 50 Texas Tech 48 - OK State scores with a tip-in as the clock expires to pull this one out (oh wait, wrong sport...)

Notre Dame 28 Temple 14- I would LOVE to see Notre Dame go down here, but they seem to pull it together for games like this. Temple will be overly jacked up and if things start going against them it'll be utter collapse. They are not used to a big stage (i.e. Utah last week).

Cal 35 USC 28- I picked against USC last week and had my butt handed to me. I'm a glutton for punishment. USC will expect an easy game (hey, they're USC and they are BACK!). Cal will throw for a zillion yards.

In other news, J.T. "'d rather have a few beers than remain on the football team" Barrett will be waiting for his slap on the wrist after getting busted for drunk driving. Seriously??? He finally gets the starting job and then does this?? Perhaps he can employ the 'I didn't know what was in my supplement' argument. Everyone else does.

USNA wins today to go 6-1 on the season. The Middies Qb, Keenan Reynolds ran for 2 Td's, giving him 77 for his career and a tie for first place on the NCAA career Td list. -- Al

Good weekend for me, Stanford survived.

I have given up on UT. I hope none of my tuition is going to the football program. ^&grin

Anyone see the incredible end to the Miami/Duke game? Look it up, it is unbelievable. Miami received the kickoff with something like 6 seconds left on the game clock. They then proceeded to return the kick for a game winning TD, long after the time expired, by means of no less than 8 laterals that had the returner back inside their own 5 yard line at one point. Incredible. -- Al

Yes, some great Halloween endings. Miami seems to have caught a break since the refs threw a flag for an illegal block which is not reviewable. That should have ended the game but during the review for some reason they picked up the flag. At almost the same time it looked like Michigan had lost again in the final seconds. But they review the play and put the ball on the one. Minnesota wasn't paying attention to the clock and ran it down to two seconds before throwing an incompletion. Then they got stuffed on a QB sneak. Very bizarre.

The officials in the Miami/Duke game really blew it on the last play. There are at least 4 errors made by the officials on missed calls, any one of which would have given Duke the win. The ACC has suspended the officiating crew and the replay official for 2 games because of the errors. I'm sure Duke understands and forgives.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Pretty ugly clip of ND coach Brian Kelly grabbing one of the assistant coaches on the sideline. His explanation was that he is "controlling the sideline" to avoid a penalty. Like that justifies assaulting the guy. And the guy just seemed to be standing there. Imagine if in real life the boss could physically attack his employees at will. What a joker.
