Brad, you were right about the Nats and Atlanta. I should have more faith. Now we get the 3 game showdown. Should be fun. Atlanta is bad. Harper got on base 14 of 18 PA, going 7-11 at bat and drawing 7 walks over the 4 games, and hitting 3 Hr's. Hope he stays hot but the Met's pitchers tend to be somewhat better than the Brave's pitchers. I expect a Battle Royale.:wink2: -- Al

Al,

It should be fun. Basically, both teams took advantage of bad teams while the other didn't, which is what you have to do to prevail.

Brad

Unfortunately, Gopher Ball Scherzer continues giving up Hr's in droves, 11 in his last 6 starts, including the 2 to the Mets today (in the 2nd inning). Sure hope he figures out where the problem is. He just keeps getting clobbered and it's been this way since the break. -- Al

The Orioles are now tied for LAST place in the AL East. I'm just so proud.:rolleyes2: -- Al

Don't despair, Brad. The Nat's 7th inning Arsonist Club is working overtime to assure the Mets victory. {sm2} -- Al
Round 1 to the Met's courtesy of the Arsonist Club. More disturbing yet is the almost complete collapse of Max Scherzer since the All-Star break. He was 10-7 before, is 1-4 after. ERA 2.11 before, 5+ after. 132 Ip w/10 Hr's allowed before, 58 IP w/14 Hr's allowed after. In 18 starts before the break, he allowed 4 or more runs 4 times; since the break, in 10 starts, he has allowed 4 or more runs 5 times. No injury apparent, but he is a pale shadow of what he was before the break and it's killing the Nats (along with the aforementioned Arsonist Club). Nats will be lucky if they manage 1 win in this series, with a Mets sweep more likely. -- Al

Our spirits as fans go up or down depending how our team did; when they win you feel like you're on top of the world, when they lose, dejected. Today is great but tomorrow is another day.

This game had many story lines -- the failure of the starters, Cespedes' amazing hitting and Wright's RBI -- but for me it was the terrific job by the Mets bullpen, especially Alvarez getting a big out on Harper and Robles' two superb innings of relief, an area of deep concern to this team.

Collins told Niese this was the biggest start of his career but he had that one big inning that continues to plague him. If the Mets get to the post season he may not make the roster. Scherzer may be tired or suffering from expectations; Darling noted that his arm angle had dropped quite a bit.

It was important for the Mets to get this first game; takes some pressure off of Harvey.

Heard Harper criticized the fans for leaving early. Can't fault him. You have to stay until the end of the game no matter what.

Evidently, Scherzer is tired. The angle of his arm has definitely dropped from earlier in the season, as everyone is pointing out, and fatigue is the reason, according to those who know. Don't know what they can do about it at this point.
The Mets bullpen was aces today, at the crucial times. Can't ask for more than that. Nats need Zimmermann to have a big start tomorrow but he has not been as sharp this year as in years past. He has been very hittable.
I'm guessing Harper doesn't want the DC crowd to pick up the LA Dodgers fans habits.
Bring on Game 2.

Went to the Sox/Jays game today, my last fling for the Summer, my last bit of fun as the shows start up again this weekend in Anandale VA on the 12th, then a week off, then Chicago looms on the horizon; gee, can't wait................:rolleyes2:

Youth has been served at Fenway as JBJ, Betts, Swihart and Boegarts led the way in an 11-4 thumping of the first place Jays; the Red Sox have scored the most runs in the AL since August 1st, talk about too little, too late.

In addition to those four, Owens and Rodriguez lead the way for the staff as well, hoping Kelly, Porcello and Buchholz can fill out the staff and/or, perhaps Price will do.

At first, I was happy with the win, then I realized the LET'S GO O'S!!!! continue their free fall and lost to the MFY's, who then gained a game on Toronto...................

Actually, one more bit of fun as Miss Tiffany informed me today her boss gave her four tickets for the Patriots home opener Thursday night......................that should be a fun ride for me down to VA Friday after that..................{eek3}

From first to worse in less then a year...gonna be a long, cold winter for my O's...Sammy
Sammy, the O's simply have to do something about the starting pitching in the off-season. I know they have a lot of FA worries coming up but if they don't improve the starting pitching it will all be for naught, like this season. I think Tillman might bounce back so might be worth keeping. Probably should resign Chen and Gausman is probably a given. Should probably move Gonzalez and Jimenez. They need 2 good replacements, at least. Angelos will HAVE to open up the purse strings. -- Al

Far be it from me to question Bochy and his rings, but his decision to bring in Vogelsong in relief baffles me. Down 6-0 he brings in tomorrow's starter to eat up some innings?

I am left to scoreboard watching now after another Giants loss. Dodgers and Angels are tied 1-1.

Just realized that the O's are now closer to last place in the whole AL than they are to the WC. {sm2} -- Al

Game 2 coming up. This is more of a must game for the Nationals but also key for the Mets, especially Harvey as his reputation is a bit in tatters up here for the last few days and he will be trying to show he's the Man.

One thing that will be interesting to watch is if Robles comes in and his quick pitches. The kid has a bit of an attitude, that I like. The Nationals hitters seemed a bit surprised and gave him a stare down that he quick pitched them but that is what he does. Have they not read the scouting reports? With all that, you never know what you get from him. Sometimes great, sometimes very hittable. Yesterday was the best he has been with the Mets and what a time to deliver your best. The hitters also helped by being overly aggressive.

Hope we can give you all a good game. Jordan Zimmermann has to be sharp and go 7 innings. Nats have to keep their bullpen out of the game until the 8th, at the earliest. Just found out Ryan Zimmerman is out due to an oblique problem. That hurts as he has been red-hot. Play Ball!:wink2:^&grin -- Al

Well, Zimmermann wasn't bad but was inefficient with his pitch count so the Mets get into the Nats bullpen in the 6th of a close game, a recipe for a Nats disaster. Then Cespedes missed that hop... -- Al

How about the Bucs! It still sucks to be in the same division as the Cardinals. Another thing that is extremely irritating is we are going to wind up with probably the 3rd BEST record in all of baseball and be playing in a wildcard. That needs to stop and I have said it regardless of the team. I don't care about divisions, the playoffs need to be seeded at the end of the year based on best records. I have said that bout the NFL too, it is ridiculous to see mediocre teams in crappy divisions get a shot, they get hot and all of a sudden are in the mix, that is BS. Play the full year, it should count for something.

But NEVER underestimate the incompetence of the Arsonist Club. Cespedes returns the favor and it's 1-run and counting... Al
