College Football 2011! (1 Viewer)

Good day for Navy and an equally bad day for the UMd Terps. Edsall needs to get a handle on the collapsing Terps. They are not really competitive right now. The defense is a nightmare and the offense is a Jeckel & Hyde act. Lots of upsets today with NW over Nebrask{eek3}, Iowa over Michigan{eek3}, and Louisville over WVa{eek3}. Now for Bama vs LSU. -- Al

Great Wildcat win over the Huskers today. I was on the road coming home from a meeting in Omaha, so I got to listen to it on the Husker Radio Network.

Every year Northwestern wins a game they have no business winning...and they lose games they have no business losing (it was Army this year!).

Not a Michigan fan but they were robbed of a TD in the closing seconds of the game. Chris

Another "Game O' the Century" this Saturday night. Who's gonna win, Tigers or Tide? Last line I saw was Bama and 4. Hard to pick the #2 over the #1 but Bama has that home field. I pick Bama by a couple. IF it isn't close, it's Bama in a blow out. But what do I know, I root for UMd.:rolleyes2: -- Al
A 'Game O' the Century' it wasn't, but it was a good defensive battle. Good thing I don't bet money on these games, ever. I'm never right. Didn't expect OT. If I was 'Bama, I'd find a FG kicker. At least it didn't end in a tie like the Notre Dame - Michigan State 10-10 fiasco in 1966. Now I have to go and put my younger 'Bama alumni brother under a suicide watch. :rolleyes2: -- Al

How can a team of Alabama's caliber have a mediocre (and that's being charitable) kicker?

I also got a kick out of the Ala fans holding back tears. C'mon, it's only a game {eek3}

Or the zero-zero ND - Army game of '46. {eek3} Chris

Missed that one.:p Things getting really ugly in College Park, Chris. The Terp fans were booing after the opening kick-off was returned by UVa for 48 yards and it never really let up, plus the fact the attendence for the game was only around 37k. One thing, Edsall needs to pick a Qb and stop playing musical chairs with them. Out of 120 FBS teams, UMd ranks 118 in rushing defense and kickoff return defense. I see a pattern.:rolleyes2: This is quite a collapse from last years 9-4 Military Bowl winner. I don't see how the Terps expect to contend against ND.:( -- Al

That was a fantastic win!! Congrat to the Wildcats for the win. A real class act organization with a class act coach.

And yes, though I am an Army/PSU fan, that win Army had had me scratching my head as well.

Will be interesting to see what develops in Happy Valley. This is going to get ugly. Though I am a PSU faithful, this one doesn't look good- and if Paterno had knowledge, he should go to the slammer as well!!

The situation is bad. The big question aside from who knew what and when, is going to be how could Paterno not be aware and if he wasn't aware, what does that say about his control/invovlement of the program and what else might be going on? This will end up being an everyone loses situation. No way it ends well. -- Al

Hi Al, I've closed my eyes to the football season. It's back to where the team was 2-4 yrs ago. At least here in Kentucky the fans look fwd to bball season when the football team is poor (as is usually the case here). Terp fans don't even have that consolation. :redface2: Chris

I watch college football because i like American footy and i can't believe the crowds, how big these schools/fields etc are.Its huge i know its a big deal to go to college in the states (over here only the clever folks go,i didn't :D) its unreal a real eye opener,ok you blokes go back to talking about your teams i will keep watching so this thread makes sense.......................:)

Just when you thought things had bottomed out in college football we get the Penn St. bomb. Man, that is an ugly situation. JoePa may get fired or leave in disgrace. Hard to believe what's going on there. The guy is as close to untouchable as it gets in PA.

Based on what we know, he should be fired and immediately. This has been a hot topic on sports talk here in NY and several Penn State alumni have called in saying how disgusted they were by what happened and how this will leave a blot on their school.

This is national news and I heard that one of the Philly papers had his photo on the front page this morning with the words "Shame" emblazoned across it.

Yeah, it looks like this might be the end for Joe Pa:

There has been talk for many years now, calling for him to step down, but it was all based on football. But this scandal shows that there is a lack of a moral compass, to know what is really important. If he didn't violate the letter of any laws, he may have violated the spirit.

Curley and Schultz definitely perjured themselves, according to the evidence that's be published so far.

First Tressel and now JoePa. Two of the most respected coaches may go out in disgrace. I still can't believe they will force Paterno to leave if he doesn't want to go and he isn't acting like a guy who is going voluntarily. It will be nothing short of incredible if they fire him. You would have to live in PA to get a sense of what a god like figure he is. My guess is they try to figure out a way for him to go with some dignity but I can't see how they do it. A real mess.

My son just came in and said ESPN is reporting that Paterno is stepping down. I don't have any details yet. What a sad end. If he had retired when he should have 10 years ago this would never have involved him. -- Al

I cannot possibly put into words the utter disbelief and just shock I am feeling at the moment as my wife and I are both Proud Blue PSU Alums.

The heinousness of this entire affair just break my heart completely. I am just completely shocked and stunned. Penn State gave me the education I needed to go out into the world and Be All I Could Be. To see my school just suffer like this just completely breaks my heart. Not wanting to sound over dramatic but it's like a Mini 9-11 for my wife and I. My wife went into the daycare business for herself about five years ago. Prior to that, she has 10 years of experience in early childhood education. While extremely rare, she (and I) have had to deal with potential abuse issues. She handled everyone and every time like a champ. Why my school couldn't do this is beyond me.

I pray that people will look at PSU as more than just a school for Saturday afternoons. Towards the end of my stint on active duty, I was at NTC training at the time for a deployment. I was preparing to leave the army to attend PSU (if the mobilization didn't occur). The PSU Registrars office gave me a hassle about my residency. My wife went to one of her professors. He called me out in the middle of the desert asked me some questions, and then told me he'd handle it. He did. That's what PSU has always been to me, dedicated professionals who go the extra mile for any of their students. The Paterno teams always seemed to carry that tradition onto the field. To see this develop just makes me physically ill. If it's true, everyone one of these such and suchs should be drawn and quartered.

And don't think for one minute that the timing of the arrest wasn't predetermined- let Paterno have his moment in the sun and then bring the hammer down. If Paterno steps down, he'll be dead in a year. I just cannot see how the man who has dedicated his life to football would be able to carry on after all of this.

I just cannot stomach the heinousness of all of this. If Sandusky stole $500,000 or had an affair or whatever, yeah, ok, fine. But the victimization of children AT A CHILDRENS CHARITY event just breaks my heart.

Among the many amazing things about this story is how quickly Paterno's support eroded. He went from untouchable to a near pariah in a matter of days. It reminds be a bit of Nixon and Watergate. I feel bad for the alums. It is a terrible situation.

Paterno to retire at the end of the season. I guess they can't bring themselves to fire him, but I wonder if that will stop the backlash. Interesting to see if that is enough or if he is done.
