Doug/Tom:

I think North Carolina may have just taken the prize in this contest.

We Terps of UMd always suspected that the Tarheels were cheaters. How else do you explain all those ACC Basketball titles?:rolleyes2: -- Al

As Jason alluded to, there is one heck of a scandal involving UC: the players and others had been receiving A’s and B’s in nonexistent classes.

On Wednesday, a report was issued, prepared by a former general counsel at the F.B.I. and now a partner at the senior law firm Cadwalader that between 1993 and 2011, two employees in the university’s African and Afro-American studies department presided over what was essentially a “shadow curriculum” designed to help struggling students — many of them Tar Heels athletes — stay afloat. According to some people involved in the program, "“We put them in classes that met degree requirements in which ... they didn’t go to class ... they didn’t have to take notes, have to stay awake ... they didn’t have to meet with professors ... they didn’t have to pay attention or necessarily engage with the material.”

More than 3,100 students, 47.6 percent of them athletes, were enrolled in and received credit for the phantom classes, most of which were created and graded solely by a single employee, Deborah Crowder, who is now retired. Some of the classes took the form of independent study courses in which the students never met the professor; others took the form of lecture courses in which the classes were supposed to meet at specific times and places but never did. Over time, Ms. Crowder was joined in the scheme by the chairman of the department, Julius Nyang’oro, who became the professor of record for many of the fake classes. Mr. Nyang’oro retired in 2012, after news of the scheme came to light.

Ms. Crowder required students to turn in only a single paper, but the papers were often largely plagiarized or padded with “fluff,” the report said. She generally gave the papers A’s or B’s after a cursory glance. The classes were widely known on campus as “paper classes.”

Sometimes, the report said, counselors in the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes explicitly told Mr. Nyang’oro and Ms. Crowder what grades students needed “to remain academically or athletically eligible.”

After skimming a student’s paper, Mr. Nyang’oro “would then assign grades based largely on his assessment of the impact that grade would have on the student’s ability to remain eligible,” the report said.

The papers the students turned in were often woefully bad, according to the report, which asked three outside experts to examine 150 such papers. The review found that in 61, at least 25 percent of the text “was taken verbatim from other sources,” and in 26 of those, at least 50 percent was copied from somewhere else.

Pretty shameful, especially for a school who used to lord it over schools how squeaky clean they were. I'm sure Duke fans will have fun with this.

Consider the NCAA previously gave UNC a pass on this whole affair. Clem Haskins, Final Four coach at Minnesota, was fired over an academic scandal and FSU was heavily penalized for violations with forfeits in multiple sports. Haskins was banned from coaching and UM was stripped of All wins for two seasons and conference championship. Their record is officially 0-0 for two yrs. Guess we'll have to wait for the ACC commissioner to act, oh wait, he's a former UNC AD! {eek3} UNC coaches were in meetings to discuss what grades were needed for athletes to remain eligible. Back to the games. Some interesting ones this weekend:

Tennessee 27 Alabama 24 - Lame Kiffin returns to Knoxville! If there is any justice, the Vols pull off an upset and chase Kiffin from the field. They have to be fired up for this one.

USC 31 Utah 24 - the mighty Trojans bring their sanction free team into a hostile environment. Huge game in the PAC.

LSU 24 Ole Miss 20 - Miles will have his team ready. The pressure is on Ole Miss.

Ok St. 41 WVA 37 - coming off a huge win West Va will have the typical let down.

I just can't figure out USC this year?

50 scholarship players playing teams with 70-80. The NCAA did a number on them. The sanctions will have an impact when all is said and done for about ten years total. The run they had under PC resulted in a backlash from schools on the NCAA board that wanted to destroy the program. It's impossible to unconvince casual fans that SC was not sanctioned for cheating or paying players. Rather from failing to apparently monitor the parents of Reggie Bush who were living rent free in a home in another city being paid for by a guy who wanted to be a sports agent. Nothing to do with the school. Compare the sanctions to those imposed on other schools like Penn St, UNC, Johnny Halftime at AM, schools full of criminals and uneligible players who can barely read or write and it highlights what a complete joke the NCAA really is.

Some interesting matchups this weekend:

Louisville 30 FSU 24 - this is mostly wishful thinking but would not be shocked if this is a close game.

Auburn 24 Ole Miss 20 - huge matchup. Ole Miss at home will be a tough nut but the game pressure is on them.

ASU 37 Utah 20 - not impressed by Utah last week even though they managed a win. On the road following a big win they letdown and get stuffed.

TCU 57 WVA 53 -WVA is killing me. Should be a wild, high scoring game.

Certainly wishful thinking, say what you want, but GREAT teams find a way to win, can't take that away from them. FSU 42 Louisville 31. Down 21 and then to deliver a comeback and a 3 TD 4th qtr, thats a team. Facts are facts, Winston is a tremendous football player, when it matters on the field, the guy delivers. The more the press hates them, the more they win.

On another note, not sure why you were not impressed with Utah, they did beat the mighty Trojans.

TD

Congrats on beating mighty Louisville. I'm sure you could compile a great football team from our many penal institutions. In fact many would say FSU has, but it's nothing to be proud of. Enjoy it while it lasts. The hammer is coming down soon. Winning is all that matters to some fans.

Well, you may be right on penal institutions providing great athletes, the problem is that all the good ones are taken and currently employed in Sunny Southern California...............:salute::

Still proud to be a NOLE! and Still Winning. Just Win Baby, that is the name of the game today, the blinders from 50's and 60's football was obliterated by the television contracts of today, it is a way of life and that train has left the station.

Warchant!

A major win for UMd (tradition wise) as they beat Penn St. for only the 2nd time in school history. This 'rivalry' used to be an annual beating for UMd as they had won only once and tied once in this series that had reached nearly 40 games. This game was the first between the two schools since 1993 (I think) and is a nice way to start the series up again. Score was 20-19, won on a FG in the last minute. It was also UMD's 6th win this year, making them bowl eligible, a result I never expected for this year. Go Terps! -- Al

Too bad the "non-handshake" is overshadowing a great win for their program.

It is another reason why I can't stand ESPN, no highlights of the game, they just keep focusing on the coin toss with no back story on Penn State's trash talking etc.

With all due respect, but in my opinion the name of the game is not just win. Does that mean winning at all costs, the ends justifies the means. I can't believe Tom meant that. If that is the kind of winning there are in college sports, perhaps these players should be in the pros. I don't believe schools like Duke subscribe to that sort of philosophy.

Don't know if anyone else watched but the Navy vs Notre Dame game was a good one. Lots of action and momentum swings. Not a whole lot of defense as the final score was 49-39, ND. Navy put up a valiant fight and actually led going into the 4th quarter but couldn't hold off the ND offense. Close, but no cigar for the Middies. :( -- Al

Al:

That was a great game. Navy didn't win but they showed they can play with the big schools.

Interesting dynamic too with David Robinson in attendance watching his son play for ND.

I missed that game yesterday but did see Tom today at the Show. He was wearing a FSU sweatshirt :wink2:

Nail on head. My main pt is that with the money and pressure on teams today it might as well be the pros which is a shame. EVERY big program is guilty of something.
