A scientist at Princeton, Sam Wang, posted the following on Twitter:

“Bookmark this. When the doubling time of deaths* gets above 3 days, we will have begun to get past the runaway period of the pandemic.

Note the current doubling times for China (35 days) & South Korea (12 days).

*not cases, which can be underdiagnosed ourworldindata.org/coronavirus#gr…”

You are right he is acting very "presidential" with blunt, factual information every day and solutions to implement. I was not a big fan either but he has stepped up.

Actually was originally planning to be closed on Saturday. Daughter and her fiancé were supposed to be flying up from Sydney and having their double birthday party and engagement party in the Valley. For some reason they had to cancel {sm2} So ended up opening anyway.

Naturally I count my business as an essential one so will keep open unless some very draconian rules brought in. Not yet got to stage of wearing hazmat gear for handling the little men but am however spraying the card machine ! Looks like schools going to close from Tuesday in VIC so think others will follow.
I doubt the government would consider toy soldiers essential, but what would they know. Yep Queensland schools will close at end of this term before Easter, stay closed for at least a month.

hydroxychloroquine...
the anti malarial drug...
is getting a few good reviews...
surely too early to claim it's a partial cure...
but I need to be optimistic about something...

Chinese researchers showed in lab cell culture tests that hydroxychloroquine can slow infections from the virus behind Covid-19, SARS-CoV-2, blocking it from entering cells.

Our PM has just announced today that the country will be in lockdown within 48hrs. Basically nothing allowed open unless it’s considered an essential service. This will continue for at least a month. Scary times ahead.

Yep things are changing daily, wouldn't be surprised if they closed Queensland schools earlier than planned.

According to the Worldometer, Spain and Italy had a slight decrease in the number of new cases on Sunday vs Saturday. Any news is good news. Unfortunately, the US cases were up and the next two weeks are supposed to be bad.

Well here in good old Blighty the government has identified the 1.5 m most vulnerable people and ordered them to stay home for 12 weeks. They will organise supplies for this group...the over 70s and those with pre existing medical conditions. You can almost hear the army lorries rumbling through the streets now. But...
..what reason is there to prevent everyone else carrying on as normal? Sure the virus is a nasty little beast which causes nasty flu like symptoms at worst for a week or so and the effect of a cold at best. Sure there will be the odd few who have yet to be diagnosed with underlying issues who may suffer more seriously but the sure way to stop the virus is to let the healthy catch it And build a corps of immune people.

In the meantime government is decimating the economy and livliehoods of employed, self employed and pensioners relying on dividends and spending money as if the future has no meaning in the vain hope of stopping the spread of this relatively harmless microbe. The world has gone utterly mad.

The Uk 🇬🇧 government is relying on science, if you can call it that, of University College London whose cries of doom and disaster have been proven to be wholly overdone in past events. Let us remember the gruesome death toll from BSE...200. Let us also remember that the death rate seems scary high but all deaths in UK have been the over 70 s or those with ore existing vulnerabilities. The likely death rate is most likely to end up at around the same as the average winter influenza epidemic and who is to say that of the recorded deaths how many would have occurred in any event? On average 50 to 60,000 deaths per month occur in the British Isles.

so let’s have some realism and pragmatism from politicians and the unquestioning parrot like newshounds who like nothing better than a huge crisis to fill the empty spaces between their ears. The government is reacting in a series of knee jerks because they are submerged in the trees and cannot see the forest.

In Texas, most legitimately ill people can't get tested:

https://www.kxan.com/news/local/aus...covid-19-infection-cant-get-tested-in-austin/

I know that the official number of cases here is "relatively" low, but it won't be in a couple of weeks. IMO, this testing malarkey has been at the heart of the American COVID-19 dilemma for the last two months. How could the government humanely isolate people who posed a risk to the broader population if they didn't know for certain who the carriers were? The answer, obviously, was that it couldn't. Now, they've employed this shotgun-approach of isolating EVERYONE from EVERYONE else. I should note also, that, IMO, the case numbers and deaths from the virus have been GROSSLY under-reported from the USA throughout the same period, again owed to the testing issue. It was flu-season, after all, and people come down sick frequently this time of year. And, of course, there's nothing unusual about old folks dying from pneumonia. :( VERY frustrating trying to explain this to people who were apparently predisposed not to listen.

They are going to be up because we were woefully behind in testing; it' a natural progression that if you ramp up testing, the number of new cases will ramp up as well.

Today our governor shut down all non life supporting businesses until April 7th.

I doubt they will reopen by then, but I give him major, major credit in the way he is handling things here, if he said a month, people would lose their minds, so he said two weeks...………………….pretty sure in two weeks he'll say another two weeks, but he'll broach that by saying things are calming down a bit, but we are being extra cautious and want to be sure we have a handle on this.

Again, kudos to him vs the ******* in California who said half the state will become infected or the moron in NJ who said the entire state will be infected.

WHAT GOOD comes from dire predictions like that? Why cause undo panic, just take things slowly like our governor is doing.

I’m going to stop giving these reports because when I post these stats things go in the reverse direction.

Can't stand our Governor. He is originally from Mass. Want him back?^&grin^&grin^&grin

The politicians are driven by fears that they will be held responsible for a lack of response if there is a worst case scenario. So their inclination is an escalating overreaction that closes everything down doing untold harm to businesses and wiping out the savings of just about everyone who had any money in the market. Then the solution is to bailout those select businesses that are most friendly to their political cause - thus the current stalemate because neither party currently has the votes to approve a slush fund directed to their business supporters. Just about every small business or working person is left to go down the rabbit hole. At best they get peanuts while trillions are added to the existing deficit.

I still can't figure out why hospitals are "overwhelmed" and need billions of dollars in support. The health care industry makes billions in profits. Has done so for decades and will continue to do so. A health crisis is gold to them. Most people who are sick with the virus are not in any hospital. They are home recovering. A very small number of people throughout the country have been hospitalized but that shouldn't be overwhelming the system. The biggest joke are these hospital ships. That's entirely for PR and not a single person will ever be sent to one of these ships short of the apocalypse. And what is supposed to happen in the next few weeks or months? Some people will continue to have this virus indefinitely. Thus, we will have to keep everything shut down indefinitely or just risk going back to normal at some point after everyone is broke and dealing with whatever happens.

Oh my, an asymptomatic Harvey Weinstein has tested positive for Coronavirus. So, a sick woman in Austin, Tx with a history of exposure can’t get tested, but politicians, basketball players and politically-connected, convicted rapists can. Will leave it at that, ‘cause I can’t say anything positive about the facts above.

Bugger the Corona Virius. The Australian Government have just closed all the PUBS. A true national disaster.^&grin^&grin Have nothing better to do now but play with my King & Country as residents are confined to their homes. Oh well I suppose its all good as it has just taken me two days to get over my 50th Wedding Anniversary hangover.

Cheers from the Land Down Under, Howard

PS Doesn't look like the GLW and myself will be making the Chicago Show this year.
