In Australia from Monday all gatherings over 500 been put on hold. NRL will be played in empty stadiums.

Formula 1 today was cancelled at the last minute as crowd waiting to go in. A McLaren pit crew member had come down with the virus and teams not happy to go ahead.

Queensland number of cases pretty much doubled overnight albeit from a low number (19). Going to multiply very quickly from here. Tom Hanks and wife included in our stats but seems brought it back from USA. Tom been making Elvis movie here for last months. The pair had been meeting lots of people in days before hospitalised. The movie shoot has closed for the moment.

The big one is the ANZAC day parades on 25 April. Not heard officially but obviously involves more than 500 people. Have heard from two sources that the Brisbane street parade is cancelled and Army will commemorate inside their base.

However in the immortal words of Winston Churchill :

Keep Calm and Buy Toy Soldiers (disclaimer : might be some bias expressed here).

Question: Hysteria or Vigilance (better safe than sorry at any cost)? Which is it?

How does this compare to influenza (e.g. Sars, Swine, H1N1)? Is comparing the numbers to Coronavirus appropriate? If not, why?

Does even asking this question, dangerous and demonstrates lack of compassion, ignorance and even worse contempt of others?

"The Medias Role": Benevolent, Informative and impartial (To Contain Spread & Reduce Deaths) or Peddlers of Fear (thus Maximizing Ad Revenue & Their Influence)

Are businesses curtailing business and sometimes closing (e.g. MLB, NBA, NCAA, Travel, etc.) because of benevolence & care or fear of in dangering their "Brand" (being callus/ greedy), lowering future revenues and opening themselves up to possible liability suites?

Are these questions moot; because public health & safety cannot be calculated like some "Cost Benefit Analysis"...Saving lives is the only true reward regardless of costs in terms of money, jobs, economy, etc.?

Which is it?

The death rate for the common flu is about 0.1%, according to the CDC and NIH the death rate for the Corona Virus will be about 1%......that is ten times more!
The flu has outward symptoms such as nasal drip, coughing, fever, chills, upper respiratory congestion. With the C Virus many people will have either no symptom or very mild symptoms.
So unless you do massive testing we can have continuous spreading of the virus with no warnings.

Perhaps some good news is coming with the onset of spring.

It was 86F in Austin yesterday, and the dewpoint was in the sixties.

I should note, however, that no one knows for sure how this virus will behave in warmer weather.

There are reports that temperatures above 70C will slow down the spread........lets hope for early summers!

After some early showers, the sun is out and it’s around 63 here. A sunny day always improves your disposition.

just got an automated call from the City of Galveston...
it's Spring Break here..
the Island is packed with kids and tourists....

the message from the City was...
that Galveston has reported it's first documented case of the Corona Virus...

Darn, Mike ... time to take "EXTRA" precaution.
The entire state of Maine had ZERO ... until yesterday, now we have one.
That was a woman who had traveled extensively through Europe.

As soon as she suspected she might be sick she (SELF) Quarantined herself in her home.
Thank God, no other cases at the moment.

Our Gov Mills has been taking a very pro-active stance.
Many wise organizers have postponed or canceled many events; colleges have delayed students returning from spring breaks; all nursing homes are "LOCKED DOWN" as are many hospitals. If you suspect that you have CV-19 they are suggesting that you do not go to the hospital yourself but call 911 and an ambulance (or similar) will pick you up.

All schools are LOCKED DOWN. No strangers can go in or out, only staff and children.

The two items that seems in short supply is T.P. and … ^&confuse Frozen Pizza :confused: .… go figure …. {sm3}

Stay safe!!!!!!!

Guys you should take note of the deteriorating situation in Italy and what occurs when Covid-19 isn't contained.

Things are so desperate there now that health authorities are having to prioritise who they can treat (age related) due to a lack of equipment, facilities and staff!

China may have been able to restrict its spread due to its authoritarian regime, but most western nations would never tolerate such measures.

Well, those are the staples of life. ^&grin Chris

Read an article about a woman who went to ground zero for the virus in Lombardi, Italy. She's a reporter and was doing a story. She tweeted when she returned that she went thru no screening process at immigration upon returning to the US. I guess it's too much to expect TSA to do a thermal screening, which takes seconds, as they are too busy harassing passengers to take off their shoes than do something that would actually enhance safety. Sec of State and airport officials were asked about it and they all blew it off. Chris

Friends of mine came back from France two days ago and weren't screened either, not inviting them to my home!

Airports are a total disaster even under normal circumstances. Can't imagine the lines and delays if they were screening everyone for health issues. It would be complete gridlock. No way that they are going to be able screen out those with a virus that exhibits no symptoms or cold-like symptoms from the thousands of people flying every day many of whom may have ordinary colds or flu. The only way to do that is to shut down the airports.

It wouldn't take any longer than the body scans being done now.

While I readily acknowledge that the Internet is not without its horns, what a blessing it is for people who truly are isolated by age or infirmity in a situation like this. I can only imagine how miserable it would be to be physically removed and unable to communicate with others outside of, perhaps, the telephone or written communication. For the rest of us, communication online allows us to go about much of our lives in spite of all the roadblocks. Guess we just have to accept the bad with the good of the technology:D

Indeed! And the more people take this seriously the quicker it’ll be gone

I returned from the UK yesterday. I was asked if I had been to Iran, China or Italy. When I said No, they let me through.

I definitely think the UK is doing a better job of communicating and being proactive about it.
