Sorry for your loss Brad. We just got some bad news as well. My wife's best friend just lost her son to this horrible virus. He was only 24 and had his whole life ahead of him. He was a smart young man and his mother cherished the ground he walked on. His mother is devastated and hasn't slept for days now. She is a single mother and he was her only child. My heart is broken for her. She had thought he beat it. He was quarantined mid March and made it through the 14 days and was feeling better. On Monday she found him in his bed unresponsive.

Thanks Joe but your news is far worse. It’s just terrible when someone so young with their life ahead of them dies. My condolences to everyone.

Joe,

I am so sorry to hear about your friend's tragic loss. Please entend my sincere condolences to her. This virus is terrifying.

Louis

Devastating. So sorry to hear of all these stories.
Big virtual hug to all!

How about a little uplifting news. John Starks, a former player from the New York Knicks (the local NBA franchise for those forum members who do not follow American sports) donated 3,000 sets of scrubs and a local business donated 100,000 masks to the New York City hospitals to help ensure the safety of the health care professionals risking their lives every day for the rest of us. It sure lifts my morale to hear about stories like this. I’m sure someone mentioned how Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, used his own private plane to bring $1,000,000 in medical supplies to New York’s hard-hit hospitals. A big thank you to all these terrific philanthropists.

Was amazing to see New York papers with the headline “thank you Pats”!!!

Rivalries, politics etc have no place in this! Nice to see the normal people know that!

We are all in this together, us versus the virus. As a New Yorker, I never liked Governor Andrew Cuomo or Mayor Bill DiBlasio, but they have both risen to the occasion here in New York, made the difficult decisions, got New Yorkers to comply with unthinkable restrictions by giving us daily briefings of the facts and data, almost doubled the available ICU beds statewide, worked hand in hand with the president and Federal officials to obtain the necessary supplies and aid, and in doing so, flattened the curve. According to the data, we appear to be plateaued at the peak, with around 8,500 deaths statewide, despite best case estimates from every expert of 60,000 deaths in New York State, so the actions of the City, State and Federal governments, and the compliance of the citizens of New York, have us tens of thousands of lives ahead of the best case projections. Perhaps more importantly, instead of patting themselves on the back, both Cuomo, who I previously thought of as a socialist demagogue, and DiBlasio, who I thought of as an incompetent, are preaching staying the course. Governor Cuomo, quoting one of my heroes, Winston Churchill, another great leader and even greater man, who rose to a far more difficult occasion, told us today that "this is not the end, this is not the beginning of the end, but it may be the end of the beginning." DiBlasio stated that they would not even consider lifting the restrictions until the data showed a downturn in all three critical factors (new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths) for at least ten straight days. Leadership. Something this Country, State and City have been crying out for, and all it took was a pandemic to get our elected officials to step up and provide it.

While our real heroes are on the front lines in hospitals, nursing homes, ambulances, patrolling their municipalities, working in food stores and pharmacies, trucking in essential products and food
and setting up new hospital facilities we can all help in our own way.

My wife and I have been contributing to "Feed America" as we see the long lines of cars and people who need food just to make it day to day. The non-profit organization uses 98% of the donations
for food directly to the needy in our country. Every time I buy toy soldiers or we buy anything non-essential (e.g. toys and games for grandchildren) we will donate an equal amount to charities.

There are also local charities like "the restaurant relief fund" and of course using curb side pick up at your favorite restaurants.
We also support "Doctors Without Borders" who again are ranked among the best charities for the percentage of money used for actual care.....around the world.

And stay home as much as possible and disinfect!

What a terribly sad situation, the poor woman.

this virus sucks...
my cousin (Chris) called me tonight...
his mother...
my Aunt Betty...
is 94 years old and was in a nurse's care home in League City, Tx...
about 20 miles from my house...
she has contracted corona virus and is being shipped to a local hospital for treatment...
I used to spend the night there a lot when I was a kid...
she treated me like her son...
a good woman...

when I contacted my mother's sister...
my Aunt Margie...
to tell her about Aunt Betty...
she told me the doctor has just prescribed hospice care for my Uncle George...
his diagnosis has nothing to do with corona virus...

sometimes when it rains...
it pours...

This absolutely brutal Joe, and I am so, so sorry for his mother. May her beloved, cherished son rest in peace. I don't know how she will be able to pick up the pieces of her life, but if I had one wish....
This virus is stone cold evil.

Joe

Michael, sorry to hear about your Aunt and Uncle. I have read a few stories lately about elderly people recovering from Covid — I think one person was over 100 — so don’t give up hope; your Aunt is probably in better shape than most of us.

Brad...Louis...thanks for your caring comments...this virus epidemic so far has been a lot easier to deal with from a faceless statistical distance...but the reality of it seems to take on a whole new meaning when it happens to someone you know and care for...

Mike,
So much suffering all at once; I'm so sorry about your Uncle George. I hope your Aunt Betty pulls through. She sounds like a really special person and provided many good times.
Joe
