Embrace an Angry Wind, Western American Soldiers from 1778 to 1865 (2 Viewers)

Nicely done Chris . . . . . I also understand that due to the high heat and humiduty and the lack of available water, that many of the casulaties on July 2, 1863 were due to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Chris, nice to see a new dio from you, always enjoy viewing those. AND, nice to see an eastern theater scene. That background vista from the top of LR goes very well with the action depicted. Very well done, as always. Chris

Outstanding Chris, love it.

Reminds me a lot of the Troiani painting, you really nailed it.

I just finished "Stand to it and give them Hell" by Priest detailing the fighting on the Second Day from Little Round Top to Cemetery Ridge, I highly recommend it, a superb first hand account of the fighting.

Not to hijack your thread, but my flag guy (Rick O'Brien of Flag Dude fame) will have 7 Hardee Battle flags for me from Western Theater Confederate units at Historicon this week, so I'll have a go at a Western Theatre themed diorama soon that we talked ab out...........again; I love this one, hope to see more Eastern Theatre work from you.

Chris,

I must echo everyone's sentiments on your latest dio. It is fabulous! I especially like the job you did on the background. It is seamless. Great job.

Decided to post a quick diorama done by myself and my 9 year old grandson. Have done one in a while, hope you enjoy it.

As stated by many others; this is excellent.

Adding your Grandson to the process adds a lot of enjoyment for you both, I'm sure !

Thank you for posting.

Fixed it for you.....................:wink2:

Everyone, as always, appreciate the positive comments. I try to do my best with these dioramas and having my grandsons involved does make it all the more fun. I even have 2 nephews who are very interested in these also. I guess it runs in the blood.

The heat and humidity did play a part in the battle for both sides especially with all of the movements on July 2nd contributing to the all ready growing list of casualties. Read in a letter from a member of the 8th Ohio how they got so thirsty they were drinking water from the hoof prints of horses in trampled areas.

Yes, it was a request from my grandson to do a diorama of a part of the battle of Gettysburg. I told him okay but they had to be Western units. Can't refuse him. My compromise was to do the next one out west if we did Gettysburg. Maybe Chickamauga, which my 3 year old grand daughter calls chicken mama. Got to love it. I will do a few more out East this year now that I am more settled.

The back drop of Gettysburg is new, I have another one I will use later this year. I made some custom trees to blend it in to the back ground. I also made a Frankenfigure, he can be seen in the foreground lying on his stomach with his rifle on a rock. He is made from WB bits.

We did use Don's painting as a guide right down to the custom trees and positioning them to match the background. I will definitely pick up that book about the 2nd day. Always looking for something new on the battle.

Glad to hear that the Western battle project is moving forward. Can't wait to see it.

Again, always appreciate the positive comments and anything you think I can do to make them better. Even the trees. I started to make trees from scratch to mimic them in the appropriate scale and actual trees from period images. Let me know what you think. I will have some pines and larger trees for a few other scenarios in the future. Here are some behind the scenes images of the diorama. Let me know if you have any questions. All the best.

Absolutely "Top notch" Chris.... using a local (UK) colloquialism for brilliant. And you beat me by a Pennsylvania mile as my Texas and Alabama troops in the Diaries thread are still on the march to Gettysburg. ^&grin^&grin

The trees are great !

Wish I had your talent.

Thank you.

Thanks everyone, again, I appreciate all of the positive comments especially from some very accomplished diorama builders. I am still working on the larger trees. I have scrapped the last version, I am on revision 9. They just do not look as good as the smaller ones and want them to fit in with them.

Bob, sorry about the subject matter but my grandson is very convincing. Consider this diorama as sort of a "movie trailer" to get us all excited for the main event on Diaries thread. Now on to the great battle of Chicken Mama.

All the best Chris

Hi Chris
I like the effect you got with the battery tea lights, great idea and I think I may well find a use for that idea myself later on !:wink2:
Steve

tremendous job, I just got back from Vicksburg in march so this thread really hit home with me. by the way they have an excellent sunken gunboat that they raised and restored which makes for an awesome display at the battlefield. it is on dry land and you can walk around it as well as go in it. if you haven't seen it take a trip. but what's again great great great job on the dios and pictures. thanks for sharing them

As always, appreciate the positive comments. I have always wanted to do a night time diorama but was challenged with lighting. I went to a wedding and they used the tea lights in a similar fashion with great effect. Let me know if you need any other info on them. I have used other small led lights as well as a variety.

I have also visited the Vicksburg NMP and the town as well a number of times and explored other battles in the area. If you go there again, I suggest you go to Corinth and Shiloh battle sites and a few of the sites across the river. It would give you an interesting perspective. They have a pretty large visitor center at Corinth and were suppose to be working on one for Shiloh. Kind of lost track of the Shiloh battlefield when I moved out to the West coast. I saw the USS Cairo when it was being raised. It is amazing the job they did to get it to the point it is in the display. Truly stunning.

Glad you liked my attempt to portray the battle of Vicksburg. I am starting to work on the next one out West this time and then will go back East this fall for another scene.

Chris

Started to work on the next diorama and will be moving back out West for this one. Staying with a Confederate theme, here are some pictures of the small stand of pine trees that we will be using as well as a close up of a few of WB's new figures in the next diorama. Let me know what you think. Chris

I'd be proud if I could make myself some realistic looking trees like those Chis. Well done !:salute::

Chris, that quite the "lab" you have there. Your early pics are very intriguing. I wouldn't have the heart to tear down some of the work you've posted. The navy yard and gunboats you posted were so innovative and well photographed. Chris

I like where this one is going already, superb looking trees, I like how you've replicated the forest bed, which is a tough trick to pull off, well done, really looking forward to this one..........
