here are some interesting pictures of Galveston...

which had a direct hit from the 1900 Storm...

it was a Category 4 just like Harvey that hit Corpus Christi the other day...

Harvey is no longer a hurricane...just a slow moving system (1 mph) that is dumping rain unmercifully...

the loss of life was staggering from the 1900 Storm...

It remains to the present day the deadliest natural disaster in US history...

estimating 6,000 to 12,000 fatalities...

Those poor people never knew what hit them.I hear Galveston would be a much bigger city if not for that storm.

Mike,

Are you still hanging in there? My son Alec is watching the news, and he told me Texas is in for 5 days of rain.

the latest projections show that Harvey is going to double back once again...and roll straight over Galveston...

again...it's not a hurricane anymore but has winds of 60+ mph and is a rain machine on steroids...so...flooding is a concern again...I wish this beast would die off...

this system has now dumped 9 trillion gallons of water in Texas...that is the equivalent of the entire Mississippi River in 9 days...

All the best Mike. These storms and natural events are causing more and more damage in large part because we have allowed people to overpopulate fire, flood and earthquake zones where it is not a question of whether but when they will be destroyed. Out west they have even built nuclear reactors on earthquake fault lines. The big one out west will make these storms look like child's play when it happens.

Hey Mike, I am keeping an eye on the weather channel and on the internet. I have log a few prayers for your safe keeping.

PS: If you look out the window you don't see any SHARKS swimming by, do you? {sm2}{sm2} TEXAS SHARKNADO!!!!

Larry...that sounds funny...^&grin...but there was actually a news report that a man was literally fishing inside his flooded home in Houston and caught a fish...that's for real...

all the rivers are overflowing and everything in those rivers is everywhere mingled into the flood waters...

I remember after Hurricane Ike...I found several snakes in my yard...as did my neighbors...a couple of 3 coyotes got displaced from flooding in their natural habitat (protected wildlife areas) and for 2-3 years after that...they killed and ate every loose cat or dog in my neighborhood before they were finally caught and relocated...

if you get the chance...National Geographic had an episode on tv last week...

watch this...it's fascinating...

"The Whale That Ate Jaws"...

recorded live video of an Orca whale destroying a 15 foot great white shark...

no contest...Orca whooped his butt in short order and then ate his liver with some farva beans and a nice glass of Chianti......

Must be pretty small dogs in your neighborhood! When I lived ia few mikes outside Beaumont I had an Irish Wolfhound, and twice he brought home dead Coyotes that strayed onto the property I was renting. When we go upstate I worry my Huskies will run into wolves, but, as my smallest female is 50lbs., and my biggest male runs 90 lbs., I don't give coyotes a second thought.

Louis...

really...that's cool...running the Huskies and especially killing the coyotes...

do you carry a hand gun when you run them?

I watch Mountain Men and Life Below Zero and they deal with sled teams and wolves a lot...

which run in packs...

yes...in my neighborhood...from the coyotes...mostly cats were killed and some small dogs...

I kind of blame the owners for leaving them outside...they knew we had a problem...

for a couple of years...it was common to see a bloody mess of fur in someone's driveway with the remnants of a eviscerated pet...

you mentioned Beaumont a few times...when were you there and why?

I lived there from 1991-1993 while I was clerking for the late Chief Judge Joe J. Fisher of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. It was my first job out of law school. I also lived in Irving Texas from 1985 through 1988.

Amid all of the chaos and destruction, it has been amazing to see so many step up and help out their fellow Texans. On Saturday night the Weather Channel showed a clip of a small traffic jam of people headed into Houston, each car/truck towing a small boat, ready to join in the rescue efforts. It was as if Houston had become a mini Dunkirk.

WhenI was in Alaska there was a beautiful Arctic Wolf (pure white fur) running around Juneau. I got a real close look at him right outside my Cherokee's window. Best wildlife encounter ever.

When I told people about it they said many dogs and cats had gone missing, but the community decided they lived in his neighborhood and voted to take no action. People just needed to take better care of their pets.

I've seen a number of foxes and coyotes over the years, including a fox that hangs out on my front porch with my cat, and shares her food right out of the same bowl, but I have never had the good fortune to safely encounter a wolf like that! Must have been an amazing experience! Although I'm not sure I'd want one hanging around my neighborhood!

I keep hearing terrible news about the continuing flooding. Mike, Carlos and John, you remain in my thoughts and prayers.

this morning is by far the worst rain I have gotten...my street is accumulating some water...I wish this thing would die off...

Mike, according to the tracking it is not over and will continue to pound you. Please, please make the call and evacuate. It is hard to participate in this forum knowing you are in harms way.

John you neighbor.

John...evacuation is not an option anymore...Galveston is at the end of the line...the last city on HWY 45...the end of the road...south is the Gulf of Mexico...east the ferry is closed...west the San Louis bridge is closed...any evacuation road is completely flooded...highways are closed...no traveling from here...we live in the Gulf of Mexico...on an Island...there is no where to run to...no where to evacuate to unless you own a large boat and want to sail to Mexico......anybody here is stuck here...

Good luck Mike. I just can't imagine what it's like for everybody down there.
