N.F.L. Season 2018-19 (2 Viewers)

I wouldn't say that Joe Montana hung on too long.

In his two seasons with the Chiefs he was 20-12. In 1993 he led Kansas City to its first division title in 22 years and a trip to the AFC Championship Game. They also made the playoffs in 1993 and in his final game he was 26 for 37, passing for 314 yards with 2 TD's.

Montana will always be a Niner to me. He did ok at KC but that was just stringing out the end of his career. He was clearly beyond his prime at that point. I prefer to see the great ones go out on top. If Brady walked away last year after that SB win, it would have been ideal. Instead he risks being forced out (not likely), getting hurt or ending his career with an ugly loss. He has taken more hits this season than I can remember over his entire career. Clearly not the same player. The Pats still have a decent shot at the SB but I think the odds are getting longer each week. Regardless, when all is said and done he will be the greatest QB of all time.

Agreed...…......go out on top, but as you said, most of these guys egos won't let them. Belichick is famous for saying it's better to cut ties with a player a year too early than a year too late, the same can be said of players, it's better to retire a year too early than a year too late.

And yes, Brady has gotten killed this year, their offensive line is a tire fire, they were screwed once Brown left for big money in Oakland, then Andrews, their center and line captain, was done before the season started, then Mason got hurt and has not been the same player, that's three out of their five linemen, not good, then Develin got hurt, he was the battering ram behind which the running game functioned, they are not nearly the same team as last year, going to take a minor miracle for a return trip to the Super Bowl...…………….we'll see what Baltimore is made of once the playoffs start.

Broadway Joe is in my top 5 of all time favorite NFL players along with Tom Brady, Lawrence Taylor, Jim Brown and Lynn Swann.

Montana used to be in there, but he's too much of a baby over the whole Brady thing; it's ok to acknowledge his greatness Joe, no one is saying you're not great, so don't be a two year old over it.

On a push, I'd put Joe into the top slot, he's just the coolest guy, nicest guy, a rebel, not all full of himself, love the guy. And that SB win; nothing will ever top that, it's probably the most iconic moment in NFL history.

Lynn Swann George? Some great SB catches for sure, but I thought Stallworth was easily the better player (and has some fine SB performances as well). As George Atkinson once said, "Lynn Swann...soft". I still don't know how Swann gets into the HoF while Cliff Branch waits forever and has now passed away (RIP Cliff). OK, showing my bias a little, and I've never been one for "award shows" anyways. Don't get me wrong, I love former Trojans (well, most of them) but Swanny to me is a head-scratcher to make the GG all time list. No disagreement with the others.

Understood, but for me, he had that certain something, he was born to play WR in the NFL.

I grew up watching him and maybe truth be told those great SB catches stuck with me...…………...

I hear ya, they were spectacular plays that are burned into memory. From that era I always loved Paul Warfield. He was really rough on DB's!

George:

You are spot on about Montana being a two year old, and it isn't just about Brady. He still, to this day, dances around questions regarding Steve Young. He begrudgingly acknowledges Young's Super Bowl and avoids the topic of the quarterback controversy that led to his joining KC just to avoid admitting that Young won the job.

It’s been more than a few years but what I remember about Swann was style and grace as a WR.

Warfield was one of those great receivers from the 60's that I followed, along with the likes of Ray Berry and Charley Taylor. Got signed 8x10s of all three. Big names now all but forgotten. -- Al

Swann did himself no favors as USC's AD. The alums there hated him. They were ready to march on his home like the villagers on Frankenstein's castle. Has a rep for being lazy and arrogant. At shows selling his autographs or playing golf while making big bucks at USC. Oddly, Pat Haden had the same experience. A tough crowd when the homers turn on you. If you think we have had some good dust ups here, it's nothing in comparison to how alums go after their coaches and ADs in college football when things go south. They eat their own.

It's ok to admit someone else is actually a good QB, no slight on you Joe.

Regardless, when all is said and done he will be the greatest QB of all time.

IMO, Manning is the greatest of all time; Brady is surgical in the short passing game, but man oh man could Manning throw downfield, he was an assassin. His problem was the Colts in the early 2,000's had a swiss cheese defense, cost him probably two or three trips to the Super Bowl, he got to 4 and won 2, but he could have had more if he had a decent defense.

Brady was a 6th round draft pick, he had to work his *** off to become a good NFL QB, Bledsoe literally almost dying is what gave him his big break.

Manning to me is the greatest of all time, people harp on the number of SB wins Brady has vs Manning, but come on, the Seattle win was gift wrapped...……...and that Falcons win...……………..a billion to one shot to pull that one out, he should in reality have 4, Manning has 2, it's closer than people want to give Manning credit for...……..just my .02...……………...

Very true on all points. Swann was a poor selection for AD. Haden's legacy will forever be giving Helton a 5 year extension with massive buy out protection. I could go on and on. But hey, at least they got Pat's tower.
Sidebar: not a single one of the top 25 players in CA signed with SC today. Oregon got the best defensive player in CA.....again. The Athletic Dept has been an incompetent mess for years. Just look at the hires, and btw, how's Coach O doing these days? The university being sunk by one scandal after another can't help either. The situation seems beyond toxic.

All sensational players Al !!! So cool that you have signed 8 X 10's of those legends.

It's somewhat subjective but Brady will be deemed the greatest. He had some advantages like playing for the greatest coach in a great system. I actually think a guy like Kurt Warner was probably a better QB though. He managed to take the Rams and Cards to the SB. I don't think many QBs including Brady could have done that. Like Wilt Chamberlain maybe the greater talent but doesn't have the championships to put him in the discussion as the greatest of all time. And if I recall correctly in the 3 SB's that Warner played he brought his team from behind in the 4Q in each of them and twice his D lost it for him. And he had an injured thumb when they played NE. Brady also caught a few breaks like the Seachickens throwing an INT at the one yard line to choke away that SB (the only NFL team that entire season to throw an INT at the one yard line), then KC jumping offside when Brady threw a game ending INT, and on and on. But great players make their own luck. I'm obviously not a big fan of Brady. I think he and Belichick have a competitive instinct that leads them to try to gain every advantage even when it crosses the line into cheating, but they are still the best. Just under a cloud. Like Barry Bonds.

Yes, the alums are howling at the moon tonight. I can't understand why players from California want to go to AZ or Oregon. No knock on those schools but SC has the tradition. Young guys today are more interested in wearing a shiny uniform. SC plays Iowa in the Holiday Bowl. If they get blown up in that game, it won't be a pretty scene. Slovis is the real deal though at QB. I think he was 3 star but he may turn out to be better than Darnold. The NCAA did a real job on SC with the sanctions. Penn St. got off after a pedophile scandal but SC endured years of sanctions because Reggie Bush's parents lived in a rent-free home. How a university is supposed to police the conduct of parents of players is a mystery but when those ruling on the situation are from other schools like ND and Florida you can understand why the penalty was so harsh. It would be like the Yankees ruling on alleged misconduct by the Red Sox.

In his day, Swann was great and so was Stallworth. Both well deserved HOF's.

I miss the times when teams had two great receivers. Swann and Stallworth, Rice and Taylor, Irvin and Harper etc.

My favorite complimentary combo was Branch and Biletnikoff. One thing that all of these great tandems mentioned had in common was a fierce defense to get the ball back for the offense to do their thing. And in the Raiders case they had the added weapon of Ray Guy pinning teams back.

Good lord, man. While I appreciate your sentiment no good can come from dredging up that h*llishly horrificness of a historically horrible half of hootball....
