That's how I understand it Mike, each team has it's own supply of balls that with each change of possession, the balls get swapped out.

That in and of itself is idiotic; do they do the same for the other sports, each team supplies their own baseballs, basketballs and hockey pucks? Why don't they make things simple and have the LEAGUE supply the balls, have the refs bring them to each game under lock and key and they and only they get to handle them right up until game time.

Thanks to the Patriots and their nonsensical BS, they will probably do this going forward from now on.

Agree with other comments, Pats would have won anyway, so this was dumb.

Regarding baseball, seems like just about every pitch is with a new ball. Must bring in a truck load for every game. :rolleyes2: Chris

George,

Wow, let's no go jumping into the Charles just yet. Obviously, this doesn't look good because of past history but where there is smoke doesn't necessarily mean there's fire.

Per the ESPN story, we have NFL sources saying 11 of the 12 balls were underinflated. However, those are the infamous "sources." I don't believe the NFL has officially said anything.

Secondly, if we assume that there were some balls were underinflated, does that mean it was done on purpose. I don't think anyone knows that answer. I hear a lot of people jumping on Belichick but if the balls were underinflated how do we know he was involved and it just wasn't some zealous ball boy or equipment man.

I heard that Rodgers said he likes the ball over inflated. Could this not be a situation where the rule is observed more in the breach.

I know a rule is a rule but do we seriously think this made a difference against a team that had little chance to win anyway.

Since Mike asked about the rule and I've mentioned it, according to CBS Sports, the NFL rulebook digest states "the home club shall have 36 balls for outdoor games and 24 for indoor games available for testing with a pressure gauge by the referee two hours prior to the starting time of the game to meet with League requirements." CBS Sports goes on to say that pre-game testing is mandated for 12 primary footballs supplied by the home team, with 12 backups also made available.

The requirements are set forth in Rule 2, The Ball, Sections 1 and 2. See http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/rulebook/pdfs/5_2013_Ball.pdf

I think we need to keep some sense of proportion about this.

Leave it to you to come on here and be the voice of reason........:wink2:

My issue is this is going to be a huge distraction leading up to the game and add more fuel to the "Patriots are cheaters" crowd out there.

My feeling is the whole country will be rooting against the Patriots other than CT, RI, MA, VT, NH and ME.

They brought this nonsense on themselves, not to mention I am sure Mr Kraft is pretty pissed over this.

does anybody know if the Colt's approved balls were collected and tested after the game?

This gets better by the minute.

The Colts felt the Patriots were using underinflated balls in the November game in Indy, the game the Patriots won 42-20.

They complained to the NFL about it and also told the league to watch out for it prior to the AFCCG.

The balls were tested 2 hours and 15 minutes before the game, THEN again 5 minutes before the game started.

Then they were tested a third time at halftime as the Patriots led 17-7 and found that 11 of the 12 were underinflated by exactly 2 PSI each.

They were then inflated back to the appropriate level and the Patriots used those balls to then run the Colts out of the building and win going away 45-7.

You know, I was wondering why the Patriots went for it on 4th and 4 from the 34 in the 4th quarter instead of kicking a field goal and why Brady was still in the game with about four minutes left, one of his last throws was a 38 yard bomb he tried, it looked to me like they were trying to run up the score; now I know why.

So the Colts were worrying about underinflated balls while the Patriots curb stomped them during the game; talk about not having your priorities strait.

Also, someone who's a scientist or an engineer is going to have to explain to me how a ballboy who's making about 10.00 an hour had the ability and the stones to do this DURING the game on the sideline with cameras everywhere, not to mention the skill to do all 11 to be EXACTLY 2 PSI below the desired amount.

On and on it goes.......................

I agree with George that it is a huge and unnecessary distraction. Wether the Patriots did it or not, this will be the story for the next 2 weeks. If they win the Super Bowl it will be an even bigger story. For the Patriot fans it would seem that the story only goes away if the lose.

I will never be convinced that 2 PSI less air in a football makes any real difference to anyone except maybe the kicker. Even if the air PSI does make a small difference to throwing or catching a ball, it sure isn't going to be enough to explain a 38 point massacree. It was a plain, old-fashioned butt-kicking and no amount of air in a football was going to change that. -- Al

I think you're missing the point. It's not that they beat them but that they allegedly cheated. The score is irrelevant. It's what they allegedly did.

Regarding George's and Jason's posts, this is indeed a big distraction and I don't think the NFL will allow it to go on much longer. There is a firestorm going on around the Patriots and if it's proven that the Coach knew or ordered deflating the balls, he will be suspended from the SB and who knows what else. They suspended the NO Coach for a year. Who is to say this won't happen here.

Supposedly the NFL is very angry and upset with the Pats. If the allegations are true, who can blame them. They will have taken away from the NFL's premiere event.

Brad is right...

this is not about the score...nobody is arguing that...not even some of the Colt's players...

no magic ball could be responsible for that solid a butt whipping...

no one can argue that NE's defense held the Colts to 7 points...that was while they used their own approved ball...and I'm pretty sure the consensus is that NE would have scored more than 7 points to win anyway...

it's about the allegation...it's about if they were involved in tampering with the ball...the emphasis is on the integrity of the game and the rules...

and I don't think anyone will ever be able to prove if there was any collusion from the staff...

unless the ball boy openly says..."the coach told me to do it"...

right now you have 11 balls that don't conform to the rules...is that the whole argument...the balls were tested...they were okayed...did anyone see NE tamper with them...are any NE staff or players admitting to anything...

no...

unless someone admits to tampering or someone has a video of them doing it...what case do they have to charge NE with tampering?

God forbid NE is someone does come forward...this would live with them forever and tarnish all their accomplishments...

food for thought...

I drive a 2012 Cadillac SRX Luxury model...

the recommended tire air pressure is 32 psi...

I have a display on my dash console that allows me to see the digital air pressure...

I keep them at 32 psi...last month or so...when it started getting cold...(20-30's temperature for a few days)...my air pressure display started announcing a warning for low pressure and the readout on all 4 of my tires went between 27-28 psi...that's a 15-20% drop in pressure...

I called my friend who runs the service department at the dealership...and he told me that extreme cold weather always lowers the tire pressure...I Googled it and the Internet confirmed what he said...

if these balls were filled and tested in a climate controlled room...and then taken outdoors in cold weather...I think the pressure is supposed to drop in them...

Professor Mike...^&grin

by the way...
the average yearly temperature in Galveston is 71.2...
the average yearly temperature in Boston is 51.4...
I don't know how you guys stand that cold weather...

71.2 degrees F . . . . . . . Oh you poor baby
:smile2: Mike

Yes, it is about the integrity of the game. How will the NFL prove someone tampered with the balls if someone does not come out and flat out admit they were told to do it; the ballboy is going to get grilled by the NFL I have a feeling to say the least.

Not sure how he could have done this on the field prior to the game as he was given access to the balls five minutes before the game started.

The Colts were watching the Patriots and the Patriots knew if; if so, why screw with the balls then?

Makes no sense, been reading a couple of Patriots fan forums I belong to and I'm amazed at how many people are pissed at this; general consensus is their Super Bowl experience has now been ruined, several have said if there is evidence of tampering, they are done with the team, a few others who had plans to go to the Super Bowl have cancelled.

The league has to come out with some sort of ruling prior to the game, so again, their investigation is going to be a huge distraction.

There was no need for any of this. Just idiotic and stupid.

Ok, I'm going round and round on this and thought of something and was wondering what you guys think of this; is it possible the reason the Patriots let air out of the balls was to lighten them in anticipation of them getting soaking wet, ie, heavy as a result of the rain that was coming?

So, in order to try to level things out, they lightened the balls by taking air out of them so that once they got wet, they'd basically weigh the same as they should be according to league?

Sounds idiotic, but it wouldn't be the first time I came up with an idiotic thought.

This sort of thing used to always go on. It was part of sports. The Celts would turn the hot water off in the opposing team's showers. ND would grow the grass three feet high if they were playing a faster team. No one cared. You would poke a finger in someone's eye and take care of it on the field if you took issue. That doesn't make it right but now every single transgression becomes the basis for a national controversy. It's exhausting. No more fun. We know how this will play out. The NFL will issue some penalty for PR reasons to get this behind them. Once the SB is over the Pats appeal and it quietly goes away. Maybe they fine BB $1.63. He gives them $2 and tells them to keep the change.

that sounds illegal if they did tamper with them in any way...

I want to know if the Colt's 12 balls were rounded up and tested after the game...and also the results of those tests...

and George...I don't think anyone has really questioned the weight...I think the issue is the air pressure...which effects the grip on the ball...

air is virtually weightless...

one of the worst has still got to be the Snowplow Game...NE and Miami...

Inspected before the game by the referees
Now what , they could'n see that then
Are the colts ball tested ??
Let see what will come out of that
I can't believe Brady and the boys are deflated
What next

The Colts balls were tested at halftime and were fine.

I saw it looks like the Patriots will be fined and lose a 2nd round draft pick; so the league is just going to rush to judgement to get this settled before the Super Bowl.

Awesome, way to go Rodger you gutless fraud.

People are saying this will be a distraction for the Patriots leading up to the Super Bowl; wonder if Belichick will use it as ammo, the whole us against the world technique.

Time will tell.
