The British Empire (2 Viewers)

I have always loved this figure Konrad ( I even bought and painted one myself), but John's work really shows him off to perfection. He is just superb - and so is your repair - as it cannot be seen. Well done John - and well done you too. johnnybach

Hi Konrad,

Outstanding! Magnificent! Incredible! These are only a few of the words that occur to me as I view your newest acquisition. You have accumulated some of the very best glossy figures I have ever seen. My congratulations for the wonderful new figures you have received!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :smile2:

Hello Konrad. I have just now noted these latest additions to your collection. Fantastic looking results from John as usual. :smile2:

Thanks to everyone for the positive comments.
Much appreciated :smile2:

Konrad, your glossy collection is very different from what I have seen before...:rolleyes2: they look very nice, special this drummer boy...

Cheers.

There is one more figure from the last delivery I want to show. A Kettledrummer from the 13th Duke of Connaught's own Lancers in 1903. Casting from BMSS (British Model Soldier Society), 54mm scale.
Hope you enjoy the pics of this fine figure. The superior gloss finish is another wonderful job by John Firth (beating retreat).
Very well done {bravo}}:salute::

Thank you, Rod,
I know that you normally don't have any busines with glossy figures, so I take it as big compliment for John's work :wink2: ^&grin

It is time to dig up this thread again :wink2:
And, Ladies and Gentlemen, what a fine reason I have to bring this up.

It was the end of last year, when one afternoon I was reading through my Britains "Standard" collector magazines.
In the Standard of February 2009 I came across an article about the Household Cavalry and a photo that showed a group of Officers from around 1890.
I said to myself, what a nice vignette a group like shown in the picture would make and what a great addition to my British Empire collection that could be.

Here is a pic of the photo in the Standard.

Since I had no idea where to find appropriate castings that could be assembled and posed like in the picture, I approached Alan Caton, asking him if he would know who makes castings that would fit this project.
Much to my excitement, Alan replied that he would make a group for me, and then send them to John Firth to get painted.
Now, here is what you all need to know. Alan used readily available parts that he had to assemble the three mounted figures, but he did not have castings that would make for the two standing Officers.
Now, get this, he went ahead and actually sculpted the two standing Officers, just to make my project possible.
So the vignette I am going to show you guys actually includes two "one of a kind" sculpted figures. The painted figures you will see are the actual master sculpts.
Yes, I am very, very proud of this addition to my collection.

Here are a few total views of the great work and combined efforts of Alan Caton and John Firth.

I will follow up later with some shots of the individual figures.

John made up the base to provide a setting for the figures that does match the positions of them on the painting.

That, in word is STUNNING. I think of all the figures in your collection Konrad this is the best. I remember seeing that photo in The Standard and I was quite taken by it. Thank you for sharing this exquisite piece by two of the worlds masters with us. {bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}

Brilliant work... yet again, by Alan and John with this 'one of' project.

I do like the base with the holes to position the figures, I have seen this with a few makers, and think its a great addition, seeing that sometime we don't want the figures on the base, and want then as individuals.

I think I may work on something like that for some vignettes I have planned.

Weel Done, and thanks for sharing this with us all,

John

The officers represented are from the 1st Lifeguards, the 2nd Lifeguards and the Royal Horseguards.
Here are some closeups of the mounted 1st Lifeguards Officer.

And the third mounted Officer, who is from the 2nd Lifeguard Regiment.
Three views of him and a closeup of the very ornate shabraque that John painted.

Two more pics here to show.
Almost forgot them :redface2:
Two closer views at the standing figures and the total view one more time.
The officer in the frock coat is from the 1st Lifeguards and the one in the shell jacket is from the 2nd Lifeguards.
A big THANK YOU to both, Alan and John, for creating this extraordinary addition to my "British Empire".
