The British Empire (1 Viewer)

You could also search for Ernest Ibitson and Harry Payne both illustrators of British army subjects from around the same time.

Martin

Hi Martin - do you know of any book of illustrations by Harry Payne? I have long loved his postcard type illustrations - if anything - marginally better than Simkin. But I don't know of any book of illustrations by him - or by another author using them.

If you do - please let me (and possibly others) know. looks like Konrad only found out about Simkins - from something that I let slip!

P.S. I will let slip anything I know - on purpose - 'cos that's what I think this forum should be all about. letting others know what YOU might know - in order to appreciate our lovely hobby better.

best regards ..johnnybach:salute::

Thanks for the replies, Martin, Johnny,
I do have one more book called "British Uniforms In Color" by Peter Harrington and that includes prints from John McNeill, Ernest Ibbetson, Edgar A. Holloway and Harry Payne.
I added all these names to my search-/watchlist and will update here when I find another good book for the British Empire.

Hi All,

Currently watching the BBC British Empire Series on Video and it has splendid colour newsreels of the pageantry on British India. Just wanted to post this here.

http://www.britishpathe.com/ Here's a site worth searching. Newsreels for 1898 -1976. There's a nice film of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police musical ride at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. I was impressed by the lance twirling!

Reference illustrations by Payne, Ibbotson, Holloway etc DP&G POBox186, Doncaster, South Yorks DN40HN produces reproduction postcards of all these artists. They are issued in sets of six with each set dedicated to a specific unit and are very good. He has also reproduced a complete set of Dress Regulations and various other books and booklets including a wealth of artillery handbooks. His web site is www.military-naval-history.co.uk and is well worth a look. Trooper

Thanks to all for some very interesting leads and web-sites regarding uniforms of the British Empire. It really is fascinating to find out just how much stuff is "out there" - and the knowledge about it all held by some members. Thanks so much...johnnybach:salute::

Thanks for that lead into the mounties Martin - very nice indeed. Interesting to note that they were wearing holstered pistols. Lovely to be able to see details such as this, which you often don't get with a single posed photo. I must remember to look at this site for other stuff. Thanks for the idea.

Also trooper. What a gold-mine of a site that is! Right up my street. I will be sending off my first-class stamps for a listing of harry Payne's cards for sure. Thank-you too.

Excellent info, guys, in particular the DP&G website.
Thank you very much for the link, Trooper.

Here is yet another book which I just received about 1/2 hour ago and my first impression is very good, lots of wonderful prints, the majority of them full page size.
Large format, a little more than 9" x 12", 173 pages.

It is:
The Ackermann Military Prints, Uniforms Of The British & Indian Armies, 1840-1858
by William Y. Carman
A Schiffer Military History Book
Schiffer Publishing Ltd.
ISBN: 0-7643-1671-0

The design and splendour of some of those uniforms is unreal.

www.naval-military-press.com have a sale on at the moment and have advertised Caton-Woodville's "Territorial Army Album" the 32 plates from the four volume series "His Majesty's Territorial Army" for £12, reduced from £22. The sale is valid until 23rd May and is well worth a look. Trooper

I am very glad to be able to show one of the latest additions to my British Empire collection. A 54m kit from Asset Miniatures, painted of course by John (beating retreat). An Indian Army Trumpeter in State Dress at the Delhi Durbar in 1911.
Hope you like it.

Superb addition to your collection Konrad {bravo}}

There is one more figure from the last delivery I want to show. A Kettledrummer from the 13th Duke of Connaught's own Lancers in 1903. Casting from BMSS (British Model Soldier Society), 54mm scale.
Hope you enjoy the pics of this fine figure. The superior gloss finish is another wonderful job by John Firth (beating retreat).
Very well done {bravo}}:salute::
