Hi Sahara,
Superb display and beautiful collection Roman FL
You "play" with me as with my Napoleon ....{sm4}
Congratulations and thank you for viewing and historical account of the battle ....

Once again Joe, a simply amazing diorama set up. The slightly muted color of the scene looks perfect! Also, I don't know what you used for a background, but it sure appears to have definite depth. It is a really cool effect.

Great job on the defensive orb position Joe . . . . I really do believe that these figures work extremely well for this type of formation . . . . neat stuff and very cool ^&cool . . . .
:smile2: Mike

That is absolutely incredible Joe! What a great lighting effect you have achieved! These FL Romans are just incredible. (I'm saving up so I can buy more, btw.) Your very creative orb formation it really does purvey the feeling of being entirely surrounded and cut off. You can feel the immediate presence of the native warriors even though they cannot be seen. Your wonderfully executed diorama really transports me in time and breathes life into this past clash. What a fascinating story it is.
If FL made an actual hard copy catalog, this would be the perfect cover photo. It's that good. Thank you for sharing.

PS: Congratulations on accumulating so many FL Romans! They certainly are stellar miniatures and a lot if fun!

Joe

Just wanted to also express my awe of the great photography and staging. Absolutely superb. And the figures are good, too. :)

Joe, this is a great pic, but we have a lot of candidates for such a cover photo. I mean, between this, Frank's Stalingrad scenes, Mike's AWI pics, Guy's Nap dios and everything that Xavier does on his blog, we would have many great options!:)

Noah

GREAT ^&grin . What a fantastic dio thanks for sharing .. Regards Gebhard

Hi Joe, awesome looking set-up and the picture came out wonderfully, the lighting in the pic really gives it a real battle look to it, once again you have done a great job with your pics/dio...Sammy

Thanks for all the nice comments fellas. It took several shots to finally get a photo that I liked. Its funny how one hobby can get you involved in another. I never really thought much of photography when I started collecting but recently I have found that both hobbys compliment each other rather nicely. Once again thanks for all the great feedback.

Very true Noah. If would almost be impossible to pick one image for a hypothetical catalog cover from all the photographers mentioned. I think the only solution then is to have a FL calendar, because then we wouldn't have to select only one pic. What image to put on the cover would still be in question I suppose, but this could easily be remedied by either A) putting FL's logo only on the cover, B) using a collage of pics from multiple artists & ranges, C) having a contest/vote for the cover image, or D) limiting the choices to Napoleonic pics only for the cover since that's FL's flagship line. (Of course there is no catalog or calendar in the works that I'm aware of....just having fun with the idea of getting some of these photographer's images published.)

But back to Joe's pic, it just really struck a chord with me......the story, the figures, the setting, the lighting, my interest in the subject matter.....the overall realism of it all. It looks very much like a painting to me.

Q. Titurius Sabinus made a fatal decision in 54BC when he agreed to come to terms with Ambiorix. Ambiorix agreed to let Caesars 14th Legion abandon their winter quarters under the assumption that the 14th Legion would have safe passage back to their lines. Sabinus who trusted Ambiorix as a former friend and ally to Caesar agreed to terms in belief that Ambiorix would hold true to his his word. Unfortunately for Sabinus the legion was attacked on the trail no less then 2 miles from their winter quarters. The 14th caught of guard and panicked held their ground and formed several orbs (just for you Mike) to hold off the onslaught. Fierce fighting carried on from the morning into the afternoon until Sabinus believed he could talk sense into Ambiorix. As both sides restrained from fighting for negotiations Sabinus assembled his entire high command with the exception of second in charge Aurunculeius Cotta to meet with Ambiorix and his followers. As Cotta looked on from within a orb he watched in horror as Sabinus and all the command staff were cut to pieces by Ambiorix and his men. Ambiorix then resumed the attack on the Romans. Cotta who was very critical of Sabinus decision in the first place fell in battle while a small contingent of Romans were able to make it back to the fort where they decided to commit mass suicide.

This is my rendition of those events. I know the armor doesn't match up since this was before Imperial times but I was always fascinated by the story and appalled by the decision making which led to the 14th Legion being wiped out.

Superb dio; look so real they way you captured the lighting. Thanks for posting

Looking forward to what it will look like now the first batch of Germans have arrived !!!

Terrific dio. Best Roman display I've seen. I agree with others, that the figures don't look like TS. Great job. -- Al

I agree, this photo is just incredible. Character goes a long way and this photo has it in spades. The first time i saw the photo it took me about 5 seconds to recognize that this was an image of our figures. 5 seconds may not seem like a long time, but look at a photo for 5 seconds and you'll see what i'm talking about. There is just something about the lighting and composition that sets an atmosphere of realism and desperation that I don't think i've ever seen replicated. I seldom comment on photos on the forum as if I did, I'd spend a lot of time doing so as Frank M, UK Reb, the French blog duo (Xavier and Guy!), and so many others post fantastic photos on a regular basis. But this one is just different...it just doesn't look like miniatures, it looks more like a painting....

I'd get the rights to use that photo Matt.As a matter of fact I'd get the rights to use photos like this from the guys to advertise your products.

At a minimum, Joe's photo needs to be on the First Legion site to help show off the great Roman line.

I'm with you on this idea. A calander of pics from fellow members showing off the different ranges would be a great thing to have. To be fair, I think your idea of the FL logo should be on the front, then, pics of the different ranges spread evenly among the pages.

Noah

Sorry for the slow response Noah. I think your idea is great!

I was just on FL's site, and it appears that more Romans have sold out{eek3}. It is my understanding that once a FL figure is gone, it's gone (w/ the rare exception being ROM001 figure). ROM004 is now out of stock at FL (my favorite figure of the initial ten figures released). The Centurion ROM011 is sold out at FL as well. I'm lucky because I just ordered this figure from our hosts a few days ago! Just in the nick of time apparently. I thought this figure might be around a bit longer because I'm almost sure it was part of the second Glory of Rome release wave. I better get busy building my Legion!

Joe, I noticed the same thing last night. I counted four of the original Romans that are already sold out, which must mean FL is doing something right with this line. If I had the extra cash, this would be a good range to start.

Noah,

There are four gone now???{eek3} I must have missed one! I hope it's one I already have. Yes, a strong indication FL is doing well w/ the range.

Joe

It is a great range.

I wonder if Matt will do any Roman building or monuments, to go along with it?
