It doesn't necessarily annoy me but it is concerning that the US and other governments have decided that they can seize the assets of private individuals because they are: 1) Russian; and, 2) wealthy. Using the word "oligarch" apparently suffices. I can understand the desire to punish Putin and Russia but the legal authority to seize private assets absent some demonstrable wrong doing on behalf of the individual is concerning. There appears to be a concept of collective guilt by association at work. Not dissimilar to the situation during WWII with Japanese citizens. It sets a dangerous precedent if the government can just declare a group of individuals collectively responsible for the acts of others and take their property. No matter how unlikeable they might be. I'm not suggesting that I feel bad for these wealthy Russians but just that this line authority is fraught with risk for abuse in the future. You can be deemed a "bad" person whose assets are subject to seizure due to whatever subjective criteria the government decides to impose. I'm surprised all these seizures have not been subject to legal appeals. Maybe they are. But even if successful, the government can draw that process out for years.
