Here in central Scotland the snow of approximately 2 weeks past is gone, 7 or 8 degrees centigrade predicted for Christmas day. There is snow further north and it may keep those that like to ski happy.
Keep Safe all in the U.S. and Canada being affected by the big snow and cold weather.
I was in New Zealand a few years back in the run up to Christmas, although I enjoyed the weather, found the adverts for swimming shorts, BBQs etc. a bit strange, but not as odd as people in Singapore in 33 degrees cent. and high humidity wearing Elf and Santa costumes singing about the red red robin etc while pouring with sweat.
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all Treefrogers!

Interestingly enough Buffalo was one of the first US cities to have electricity. It was a kind of American Paris in the early 20th century. Those days unfortunately are long gone. I do like the wings, though. They are also the rare Americans who know how to drive in the snow. If you have an inch or more of snow in the DC area, it is paralyzed for weeks.
LOL. In the DMV (District, Md., Va.) all one has to do is mention the word snow and 'Poof!', the grocery stores are emptied of food, the hardware stores are stripped of all winter related items from shovels to generators, and traffic freezes in place for hours, if not days or weeks. It is a standard joke in this area, do not venture out in any kind of inclement weather (to include sunshine in many cases). :rolleyes2: -- Al

Just came downstairs to start the day. Temperature is -11°F with a wind chill of -36°F . . . Double Brrrrrrrrrrrr!

Had about three inches of snow yesterday. With all the reports of dropping temps and the end of humanity, I decided to shovel out my driveway before it could freeze over like concrete. No easy task since the rain made the snow heavy. I wake up this morning to discover that the overnight temps rose, and every flake of snow has melted on its own.

Well friends,

You know I loathe the cold and it is in the teens here is San Antonio, but SUN SHINEY! I can tolerate it if the sun is shining but still can't stand the bitter cold.

It took two days to cover my plants, specifically my Sago Palms. During the blizzard of 2020 I lost practically every single one that I had planted the summer prior to the storm and had some majestic big ones. Cost me about 5k! This year I planted more so it took a little longer to cover them all. My trick is a U-haul blanket and the brown heavy duty tarps from Home Depot. Something about the shredded denim keeps the prawns from burning and freezing. I used to wardrobe boxes from Home Depot to encase a Hibiscus and Gardenia I planted in spring that are beautiful. If they make it, I will be happy as I had to nurse them over this record hot summer to keep them hydrated. So, I hope they make it, but they are test subject to see if the boxes work. If not, I got two replacements in the garage waiting to be planted.

The Good news its going to be in the 70's and clear for New Years, then we are off on a cruise, then Miami and then Hawaii in January.

When the huge snow storm hit Texas a couple of years ago I ran my mouth complaining about how the State let us down.

I went on to say that we did not learn our lesson and that we were doomed when the next massive arctic blast hit.

I was wrong.

The last 4 days have seen cold weather that was worse than that storm, yet the power grid held and performed admirably.

Jason...I'm not sure if there were actually any upgrades...modifications or improvements on the Texas power grid...but Galveston did fine with this freeze...I lost power for about 1 1/2 hours...then it was restored...no burst pipes at my house...not yet anyways...I have not tried the sprinkler system that I shut off, so I may be jumping the gun on damage...but so far...so good...

they need to change their classification of these winter storms from "once in a lifetime" or "100 years freak anomalies"...because this is the second one in 2 years...as we have gradually been destroying Mother Nature for decades...these storms may be our new future...we should have listened to Al Gore...lol...

I did see some houses with standing water on the a few street curbs...indicating that there were some broken pipes...but nothing like 2 years ago...I remember 2 years ago you had to get on a long waiting list for a plumber...that freeze knocked out my power for 2 days...I slept in front of the fireplace to stay warm...but not the case this year...and as you mentioned...this freeze was actually colder...

anyway...glad your San Antonio house came out okay this year...homes in Texas...especially those close to the Gulf of Mexico are built to endure windstorms and hurricanes...not below zero temperatures...freezing temperatures are a totally different animal than 100 mph winds...

Mike:

Great post.

Texas, especially the gulf coast, is not prepared for sub freezing temperatures, let alone snow.

We have no salt trucks or even emergency snow vehicles.

With that being said the Government did what they said they were going to do, they insulated power plants. In the majority of the state the power stayed on.

Now is the time to prepare for the next eventual snow storm, while I still have my doubts I can’t help but feel some sense of relief when it comes to our State’s power grid.

Two weeks ago Texas saw weather in the teens with “feels like” temperatures in the negatives.

For the last few days it has been at or close to 80 degrees.

I'm for Fed & State & Local infrastructure investment.
Still, that may not save Chicagoland - even the "roach coaches" are packing up and leaving.
Nor will it improve the weather here, which - global warming or not (I think it exists btw) - is frightful here. The Sun has forsaken us - let us sacrifice!
Anyway Best Wishes and Happy Shoveling/Plowing to my Northern neighbors.

Yikes, "just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in":

Colorado, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming are among the states that will face the brunt of a winter storm brewing from Monday to Wednesday that could break April snow records, the National Weather Service warned. Up to 30 inches of snow was possible in portions of South Dakota, the
weather service in Rapid City said.

Here in PA we have apparently gone the longest amount of time without "measurable" snow since they started keeping track over 100 years ago. The streak is likely to end this weekend with a couple of inches on the way.

We are in the belly of the beast according to the Weather Channel. Maybe 1 or 2 inches of snow. I feel like Admiral Peary at the North Pole.

I hate the local weather forecasters. They predicted Snowmageddon, we are now having Rainageddeon. What a freaking joke. I may not be a meteorologist but when you see them calling for measurable snow and the high temps are high 30s to 40s, you know they are full of shiite.

Yup, same here..............we're going to get "clobbered"......with 2 inches of snow.......

Bozos.
