Let it Snow (2 Viewers)

When I was a kid it was so much colder here that we played ice hockey on the pond all winter every winter. Really cold, but really great memories.:salute::

In South Texas we are facing a weekend of temperatures with highs in the 20’s and lows in the teens with snow on Monday.

Not to worry though, in just about 50-60 days it will be 90+.

And people wonder why real estate is so affordable here.

...snow, snow, and more snow....and a wee bit baltic...

...local roads now impassable with drifting snow (being kicked along with 50mph gusts)....jackknifed trucks have now closed the main dualer north and south bound.....the only vehicle moving (barely) are tractor's.....but only if it happen's to have a snow plough attached....

...gave up shovelling snow after 3hrs....back inside for drink, nibbles, and seeing how the world is getting on via the laptop...

...it's a grand life!

All,

I'm pissed...supposed to be around 15 degrees Sunday and Monday with some reported snow. AWWWW HELL NAW! I haven't left the house all week. I DO NOT like this type of weather and actually looked at flights out of here, but last minute bookings was way to expensive. I spent the last two days covering plants...

I wish I was back in Honolulu.

That's crazy guys! {sm2} When I lived in Texas back in the early 1980's though 1988 (Irving) and again in 1992-1993 (Beaumont) I think it snowed about 1/2 inch maybe twice, and the temperature never dipped below 30. When I moved back to New York my blood had thinned out so much from the hot Texas weather I couldn't handle the cold any more.

Stay inside and stay warm, my friend!:salute::

Bitter cold weather with dangerous wind chill warnings continue here in south central Wisconsin. It's almost too cold to snow since the air is very dry. This morning when I woke up the air temp was -12°F with a wind chill of -35°F.

As you probably found out Texas is a land of extremes, one season it is a rain forest, the next it is like living on the sun and before you know it you are living in Antarctica. And that is without mentioning tornados.

It is always a shock to me when I return to California where 85 is too hot and 60 is too cold.

We've already had more snow this winter than all of last year. Granted that isn't saying much since we hardly had any last year. We have snow still on the ground from the last big event and maybe several more inches this week. I don't mind the snow too much if I don't have to drive in it. Remind me to never drive in Texas when they have snow or ice! That was an horrific pile up on the highway. Something like 130+ vehicles involved. It reminded me of one of those old Irwin Allen disaster movies.

Okay.............

Tomorrow morning it is supposed to 7 Degrees and Im pissed.

I had to hot water splash my HVAC units as they were frozen.

Spent all morning burning wood in my "fire pit"...yes "fire pit" that is SUPPOSED to be for smores. Took the coals and stuck them under my tarps to protect the plants. I'm the only yahoo who covered my plants in the entire neighborhood. I guess I'm the only one who watched the news.

I'll be back out in the morning burning more wood for coals and the plants.

Up to three inches (maybe more) by morning.

The good news? Its supposed to be sunny all day with a high of 20 something.

This is bad man, real bad. I mean we have some snow and freezes before but not this LONG. The longer it is the worse it is. The city is shut down, no school and we closed up shop. Down here we have not trucks for sand, salt or bulldozers to clear the roads. Zero infrastructure...err snow equipment. So, we are at a stand still and may be until Thursday.

PS: Just finished "The Americans" and don't have a show to watch.

Well my friends, its about 4 AM my time...there is 5 inches of snow on the ground AND we have no power. I'll take some pics soon, but I forgot to plug my phone in last night and I am down to 5%.

I can't believe this.

I think it was way more than 3 inches.

We recorded an overnight low of -6 in our neighborhood.

We lost power multiple times and we could have more rolling blackouts today.

The biggest problem with a high temperature in the 20’s is that the snow will not melt, even if the sun is shining.

Jason,

THe power came back on and I was able to down to cups of hot coffee and just as I was feeding the dogs...POOF...it went off again. Also when the power was on the porch and garage lights flipped on I saw snow drifts. What the hell! Yeah, it IS more than 3 inches. Right now I'm recording at 7 degrees and even though the sun will be up, it won't make a difference as far as melting is concerned. I will be at the fire pit again today and hopefully I can find some dry wood to spark it up.

This storm is for the books. I have NEVER seen anything like this before. Last night when it was freezing rain or ice pellets it reminded me of Korea...UGH! I hope this is not the norm, but in recent memory I think we got snow (for one day) four years ago. I remember it because we were at the high school soccer potluck and it started to snow. As you know, by the next morning it had melted away. But the incidents of snow are getting closer in time than I remember as a kid. Yeah, it cold, but SNOW every few years? Nah, man something is not right here.

Here's the crazy part: next Tuesday it reported to be in the 70's. From 7 degrees to 70 in a week. Total Texas weather turn around. No wonder the Meteorologic Society has their conventions here...biblically apocalyptic weather in them there parts.

John from Texas

We got about 2" of snow last night. But that's over a solid base of ice. No sunny days and temps not above 28 deg to melt. Our two German Shorthair Pointers are older dogs and fall on the ice and we have to help them up. At least power has stayed on. Yrs ago we had a big ice storm that brought down power lines and cell towers across the state. People were dying from using charcoal grills for heat. Gov had to send the Nat'l Guard house to house to check on people. We were without heat or power for four days. I bought a kerosene heater and generator after that. Chris

snow sucks!
don't know how you guys up North deal with this...
I'm moving down to Mexico...

Michael,

When I lived in Beaumont I never saw snow, and I don't think I ever put on a winter coat. In Irving there was a couple of very minor snow storms, but they seemed worse because the locals had no idea how to drive in the snow and there were tons of accidents.

The infrastructure (not to mention the houses) in Texas are not designed for snow. My house in Roslyn Harbor (built in 1843 before there were furnaces) has five fireplaces (three of which are still woodburning- we converted the other two in the kids rooms for safety, so they can't be used when the power goes out) and we always have a cord of wood on a stand right outside the kitchen door. When, in the past, we lost power during a winter storm (once for 10 days), we just shut ourselves in the 3 rooms with the woodburning fireplaces, stuffed towels under the doors (so cold air couldn't be pulled in from the rest of the house by the hot air rising up the chimney), and kept the fires going 24-7. Not too many houses in your neck of the woods have that option. Also, up here every village, town, county and city has its own snow plowing (either in house or by contractor) so the roads are cleared within a day of any storm, and are plowed, salted and sanded throughout the storm. Heavy snow is so rare where you are I doubt most municipalities have any means to salt-sand-plow the roads. Almost everyone has at least one 4 by 4 in their driveway (we have two custom Jeep Wranglers), so no one is trapped at home.

I hope you and John and all of our friends from the great State (Nation?) of Texas stay safe and warm until this mess blows over.:salute::

Louis...

thanks for you reply and concern...
and yes...you're right...
Texas home are not built for this weather...
nor are Texans...^&grin

I actually lit my fireplace today...
first time in 1o years probably...

worse yet...
Texans have no idea how to navigate a car down these slippery icy roads...
I just went to Walmart to get some staples and saw people swerving all over the place...

I'm sympathetic as the little bit of snow we got is nothing compared to my Northern friends...

stay warm...
stay safe...
thanks...
