Let it Snow (1 Viewer)

Nice house Mike.
To John, you wake up early, even while on vacation! I rise at 5:00 am and I thought that was early.

It amazes me that in the year 2021 that we can't keep the power on during a storm. Untold numbers of people end up in the dark and cold. Often without any access to television or Internet because they have no power. No one ever considers perhaps burying the power lines. It's too expensive! Imagine the costs of so many people having no access to power for days or weeks following a storm. They can't do their work, attend school, or have access to emergency information. Back to the stone age because of one storm.

snow sucks!
don't know how you guys up North deal with this...
I'm moving down to Mexico...
opened the door to let the dog out...
he just looked at me and turned around back to his basket...

my house...

Beautiful home Mike, but I'm having a hard time spotting the snow. Chris

All,

First this is what I woke up to this morning:
IMG_5453.jpg

Freaking unbelievable and like I said I am pissed.

Louis, when we were building my house we paid extra for spray foam insulation in the attic, west facing walls and the basement. I can't remember how much it cost, but one of the single best expenditures we made on the house. The logic? Keep the house cool in summer...HA...never thought about the other way around.

Louis again and Terp, For the love of God I cannot believe you guys will be with out power...FOR DAYS ON END. That is just unacceptable to me and yes I hear about in the news every year, but it has hit home this year. Towels under the doors and sequestered in your rooms? Ah hell no. HOWEVER COMMA, Louis FIVE fireplaces? Bunch of high rollers up there in Roslyn.

Combat ya think? Yeah, how in this day and age are we like some third world country with zero power during a snow storm. Its not like you don't know there coming every year. Yet, utility prices go up. Freaking scandalous.

GFB, yes sir bright and early every day. In the winter I'm up around 430-5, Summer 330-4 and while in Hawaii those mornings there was absolutely peaceful. Warm, lush, quite and then the sun would come up. What a magnifiencet site!. I guess it's one of those things from the military that I just got used to. No alarm clock...I just...wake up. Love it! Throw in some coffee and brother its heaven.

Mike, I KNEW you lived in a mansion! I knew it. What a lovely home and I'm going to Mexico with you. However, last time I was in Playa Del Carmen the power went out there too. It was in the summer, so I don't know. Anyway, going with you to Mexico would be a hoot! ICE DOWN the DRINKS.

LASTLY, our neighborhood is targeted for the rolling black outs. 5 Minutes on 35 minutes off. When the power came on after burning some wood I ran to the shower and took a hot one. Ran to the microwave and heated up some left over chili and got a hot cup of coffee. This is some BS and I wish our Governor would reach out to the California governor and ask him HOW to do rolling black outs.

I can here them in the utility offices now:

PUC Meathead-"Yeah THAT neighborhood...bunch of high rollers with pools...turn off their juice...they'll be ah-ight."

Mom with Kids-"How in the hell I am I feed everyone in 5 minutes"

Mom with newborn-"How in the hell am I supposed to keep the infamil warm"

John from Texas-"Whats for dinner?"

Wife of John from Texas-"Whatever you make on the BBQ...cause thats the only thing that works"

Daughter of John from Texas-" I'M COLD"

Mom of daughter and wife of John from Texas-"ALL YOU DO IS COMPLAIN"

Argument ensues

John from Texas-"I'm going outside to the fire pit"

John from Texas

I read an article yrs ago about why new power lines were not being buried in Louisville. It was $1M per mile here, and $3M per mile to convert existing lines in California, a mere $800K for new lines. Just to dig a trench. Disgraceful. Chris

You should check out generators after the storm passes. I got one after a winter storm a few yrs back for <$1K, better generators available for more $ of course. Had an electrician hard wire a receptacle from the generator to the circuit breakers (it was a simple and not expensive fix). Just roll out the gen and plug in when needed. I can power a hot water heater (hot showers are nice), lights and receptacles on the first floor, tv, refrigerator and microwave all at the same time. I can plug in electrical space heaters. Can't due the furnace or a/c due to power limits. It comes in handy for winter use, but also after summer storms/hurricanes. Chris

They should enlist the Army Corps of Engineers and at least start with the high risk areas. It seems like a national security risk if thousands or millions can be left without power after a storm. That would be proactive, though. So it will never happen. Imagine the cost of the fires started in California from downed power lines? Tens of billions of dollars. All avoidable.

Yup, and every summer California suffers power blackouts due to the threat of fires from the electrical power system. Chris

Man,

What great advise. I am definately going to look at a generator now! Honestly, I want to be completely off grid. I got this high fuluton solar system and am still not off the grid. This has got to change. I chip in one for the energy and the enviorment and get paid back with 5 minutes at 20 degrees and going lower by the hour. Like I said I am pissed...getting ready to eat in the dark. With candles of course but I am not in the mood.

John from Texas

PS: I have to hurry up and type when the juice is on.

A fraction of the $1.9 trillion with a "t" for pandemic relief (most of which will go to political cronies) could resolve this issue. Just bury the power lines. America has almost unlimited resources to get it done. But it will never happen. So thousands across the country will go without power with every winter storm or hurricane. California will burn down several times a year. But those stimulus checks will go out.

Maybe the thousands of energy workers who lost their jobs with a stroke of a pen can grab a shovel and start digging; oh wait, those fellas are going to be put work building solar panels, my bad..................:rolleyes2:

5am in Texas, I just finished packing up my insulin and putting it in the back seat of my car in the hopes of keeping it cool.

I have been without power for 32 hours. Just about the breaking point for a refrigerator before it gives away the last of its cold without electricity.

This storm is unprecedented, however it didn’t appear out of nowhere. 3 weeks ago local meteorologists were warning that it could bring cataclysmic cold and snow that would tax every aspect of infrastructure. Maybe the 75 degree weather at the time created denial or maybe those in charge bet against such doomsday weather from happening.

Everyday people took the warning seriously but the government did not. The difference is I can stock up on blankets, water etc., what I can’t do is prepare an energy grid for a winter storm.

The government could have.

I feel for you guys. We lived through two weeks without power during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and that was pretty rough. Fortunately, it wasn’t as cold as the cold you are now suffering.

After it was all over we purchased a whole house generator that runs off natural gas. It’s a bit more expensive but worth it. We didn’t like the kind that ran off gasoline because if there was no power for an extended period of time, gasoline stations wouldn’t be open for refilling the generator. I’d recommend that you guys look into one. It rarely kicks in but you appreciate it when you need it. Improves house values too.

A few people have mentioned sinking the power lines into the ground. Our town investigated it and its prohibitively expensive. The out of state workers who activated our power in 2012 were amazed that the lines weren’t buried underground.

It's 2°F here this morning with a wind chill of -12°F. This is the "warmest" morning we have had in the past 12 days. Needless to say my hot coffee is quite enjoyable . . .

Yes, it is amazing that this country could build an interstate road system, dams, and other infrastructure decades ago but now nothing can be done. Millions just sit in the dark for days or weeks. California burns every year etc. It's too expensive to bury the power lines! They could easily put some combination of military and social program together to get it done. Instead of giving trillions away, they could put people to work doing some good. Maybe all the folks who are unemployed due to the pandemic. But that is hopeless.

Here in Dallas like a good deal of texas ,\many hundreds of thousands sit powerless in the energy capital of the U S,,The windmills and solar sit frozen and silent,,,much more dependant next to calif then a lot of us knew,,here we thought global freeze wasnt in the cards
