Something needs to be done about the transfer portal before the bowl games. Maybe suspend it from the end of the season until after the bowls are played. It is ridiculous. Players who choose not to play in the bowl game should be forced to refund their scholarships etc.

Since the playoff format was introduced, for the most part, the bowl games are a big nothingburger except for the players, students, fans of the university and the school itself, none of them have any sort of national championship implications now.

I honestly have not watched one second of any games, nor do I intend to, they are more like exhibition games now.

It's going to get worse as they expand the playoffs too, but it is what it is.

No top end talent is going to risk injury in a game that means nothing, the transfer portal is a whole other can of worms.

I don't think scholarship reimbursement will be much of a deterrent for the first round draft picks such as the USC QB.

George:

Great post.

Among the students, alumni and fans, let’s not forget the biggest revenue maker, gamblers.

During these crap bowl games ESPN mentions point spreads, over unders etc., just as often as the score. They know where their ratings come from and it isn’t some nobody who graduated in 1997.

Tuition at USC is something like $60K per year. Most players are not first round picks. At the very least, it squares the notion that they get paid for playing football with deciding not to play. It will never happen, though. The coaches won't touch it. It would kill recruiting. Nice win by USC last night. I had low expectations given how they finished the season, but the backup QB played lights out. Six TDs with no running game.

Louisville was very much overrated by playing in the ACC. They would have been 7-5 in the SEC and lost their last three games when facing mediocre competition. The USC QB, Miller, was talking transfer portal prior to the game. Wonder if USC will try to keep him on the roster after last night's outing.

At this point, I would take a win over anyone with half the USC team jumping ship. This was a nice morale boost going into the offseason. Moss had a great night but not sure he is the answer when they have to play teams like LSU, ND, and the Big Ten. Riley has hired a top-notch D coaching staff to replace Grinch who is quite possibly the worst D coach in football history. So they should be much better on D.

Their defense coordinator has the last name Grinch?

And he got fired near Christmas time?

Sometimes the jokes write themselves.

He was called many other names by USC alums before he was fired. They had a stat last night that Riley has had the 2nd best offense over the last five years in college football, but the 86th ranked defense.

Almost time for the big games. My predicts:

Georgia 30 FSU 13 - I hope I'm wrong but can't see FSU scoring more than one TD with the backup QB. Maybe all the Georgia players have bailed, though, and the game ends 7-3.

Bama 27 Michigan 24 - Should be a good game. Bama keeps getting better. They had the big mo to end the season but the long delay might zero that out. Defense travels which means Harblow has the advantage. I just hope karma catches up to him. Michigan should have been banned from the playoffs and Harblow fired in disgrace. Instead Michigan is offering him a $100+ million contract. Way to instill values in the students! Cheating works.

Wash. 38 Texas 30 - Should be a great game. You will know Texas is in trouble if Sark spends the game looking at his plastic play sheet. I bet "bubble screen" is written on there somewhere.

Someone really needs to explain why Ohio State’s QB “transferred” and ended up at Syracuse?

I am no fan of OSU but isn’t that like being a med student at Duke who transfers to the University of Pikeville?

Very strange and it made for another fugly bowl game when the OSU backup QB was injured early in the game. You know your team is in big trouble when the starting QB is wearing the number 33 and looks like a punter. Then he gets injured, and they have to roll out the "young" guy who has never played. Nice to see Missouri tough out the win.

Just found out that UMd's Qb (basically their entire offense) has decided to forgo their bowl game. UMd is a .500 caliber team with Tugaviloa, so the chances they will be competitive with him sitting out are zip. What a joke. No chance this game will be worth watching. -- Al
Boy, did I ever miss the mark on this game, at least from the Terp POV. UMd dominated from the start and scored 21 points in the 1st quarter, the most 1st quarter points in the 30 bowl games they have played in. Terps have just shot Auburn to pieces in every aspect of the game. They currently lead 31-7 with 11 minutes to go in the 3rd. Still lots of time for Auburn but the game has certainly been worth watching to this point. -- Al

Auburn is a terrible team, this is their true talent! That said, credit to the Terps, they are taking care of business.

No surprise in the FSU Georgia game, I am not sure FSU has any current starters in the game from this season!!! What a mess

63-3?

Mother of God.

Georgia took all their frustrations out, I'll give them that.

Wow.

With the playoffs expanding to 12 teams, I wonder if the bowl games will be ****canned, they are a complete waste of time.

The last line of this post is perfect as it sums up the end of college football.

Or at least one can only hope this is the end.

That game was a travesty. The NCAA should be ashamed. I felt bad for the FSU players that showed up. The idiotic commentators kept saying they were getting experience. That is like trying to spin the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima as an urban renewal opportunity for the Japanese. This was Mike Tyson boxing Pee Wee Herman but without a TKO rule. Brutal.

FSU from what I read was going to not go to the bowl game, but they weighed the money aspect of showing up. Well, they may have gotten paid, but you wonder how badly the playoff debacle has really cost them? It showed they need to leave the ACC among other things. The opt out and tranfer portal was almost like receiving the old "NCAA death penalty".

There have been some bad bowl games - Ohio State looked awful and you have to wonder if that coach survives.

Long story short - what should have been a storybook season for FSU ended in an absolute nightmare.

One more thing I have to add is that I have a lot of respect for GA Coach Kirby Smart after this game and his press conference. He said what a lot of coaches would be afraid to say in his position regarding CFB playoff. He told the truth and made a lot of points. This too shall pass, but they are good points nonetheless. Whoever wins out will be the clear winner without an asterisk, but jeez, after this seaons moving to a full blown tournament IMMEDIATELY following conference championships is the way to do it like basketball. There is no bs, you win, you move on. Injuries will still greatly affect the flow (Just look at Texas in last year bball, they lost their star center in late round and it cost them), but that is the way it is. There will be no more desk jockey committee BS. Pick 12 teams and that's it. (I really believe that somewhere in the top 12 is the best team, they just have to win out).
