Things that annoy me (5 Viewers)

You all seem like a bunch of sissy's! Growing up we had no air conditioning. My parents did not get air conditioning until after I was married and out of the house. All we had were a box fan that was in a window and turned on at night to pull in some cooler night air. I remember my mom telling us "don't complain about the heat as we are all hot". Up until I was 12 years old we lived in Jefferson Barracks. It was an old army post when after WW 2 because of the housing shortage they converted the old wooden army barracks into apartments. Only veterans could live there. Then when we moved into a house it did not have air conditioning but at least it had a basement where it was a bit cooler. About the first 4 years on the police department none of the cars had AC. Also looking back on the police department in the first 4 or so years the only radio we had was in the car, no portable radio that you carried on your person. As I look back how dangerous was that? But I was in my early 20's, nothing could happen to me!
Same here, grew up in Baltimore with August temps up to 100 deg and no A/C. We also had a box fan in the hall window to draw in some air to be able to sleep. Parents finally got A/C after I moved out.

Ahh the good old days!

My first car had no A/C, but it did have the 260, 2 windows rolled down going 60MPH.

All of my cars since then have had air conditioning. Now and then I think about rolling down the windows and turning off the A/C so I can suffer. Then I remember that I am not a “get off my lawn”, back when I was a kid, old man.

Not yet at least. 😁
Yeah, the good old days when people were dropping like flies from heat stroke.

Nothing I enjoy more than sitting outside in July and August with sweat rolling down my face and making ball soup, now that's what I call enjoyable.

None of the cars I owned from 16 to 28 had AC, then I came out of the stone age and what a difference.

The childhood home I grew up in has AC window units galore until my parents decided to put in central air...........my condo has central air too.

Can't live without it, don't know how those who don't have it can either.

When it's cold out, you put on another layer; when it's hot as balls out, stripping down to you drawers is not an option, nor would it help.

But again; hey, to each his own.

Hey Gary, good one. Sissies Lol. Remember when cars had that small side window to let air in. I wonder if kids nowadays know what roll down your window mean. I think we had ac in our family car, but my folks never put it on, because they thought it was frivolous and burned more gas. That box fan roar sounded like it would take off and fly away. Good thing the Japanese invented quiet fans.

Wing windows and "curb feelers" Who can forget? My father owned a Hudson that had the metal frame down the middle of the windshield and vacuum operated windshield wipers that sped up or slowed down depending on how fast you drove.

I remember in 1966 I was a cadet on the PD and that summer it was so hot and they had so many heat related deaths in the city that the morgue was filled and they had to put the dead on ice. That was the year the 2nd Busch Stadium opened an the MLB all star game was played in St Louis during this heat stretch. Some reporter at the game asked Casey Stengal what he thought about the Cardinals new stadium and he replied "It holds the heat well". In 1954 we were living in one of those apartments converted from the old wooden army barracks and one day in July St Louis recorded it's all time highest temperature 115 degrees. And my poor mom was 9 months pregnant at the time!

The Rams signed Stafford to a megadeal despite his age. He is already injured and unable to participate in camp with back soreness. Maybe they are just being overly cautious with an aging veteran, but I would never sign a player to a long-term deal in the NFL with the injuries and short careers of most players.

Arrr the good old days when men were man and women were woman........AC in cars back in the 70s & 80s didn't exist, where you ended up blasting yourself with hot air or cold air from outside the vehicle or simply wound down your windows, unless of course if you were fortunate enough to have a sunroof and popped that open.......back when car seats got steaming hot and your metal seat-belt was likely to brand you.

Folks these days have got soft........:D

Don't forget vinyl front bench seats, great for date nights but could give you 3rd degree burns on hot Summer days, made worse when girls wore hotpants/Daisydukes and guys wore 'Stubbies' (a brand short shorts for guys in Australia).

The relentless media publicity of the recent NYC shooting. The lead story on every cable and newspaper outlet yesterday and today. it's hard to understand why certain crimes draw this level of attention and others do not. There must be dozens or hundreds of shootings in every major city in the US. But crickets. It also seems unhealthy to dwell on these random shooting events. It puts ideas in the heads of other mentally unstable people.

The lantern fly. An alien like bug that is plaguing PA and several other states. It apparently comes from Asia. Creepy. The directive is to stomp them on sight.

What annoys me about the lantern fly is the government and media reaction, treating it like a SyFy channel disaster film.

That's not to deny the damage it caused in the first year that it emerged. But the government and media treated it like the Spanish flu; it was a sign of the apocalypse. Anyone who paid close attention to the bugs saw first that it was easy enough to kill them, and that second, natural predators emerged, that also noted that they are easy to kill. That summer, I observed birds catching them and eating them, and insect predators like wasps catch them and take them back to feed them to their larvae. Anyone with a high school biology class behind him could have predicted that. And the measures to kill them before they grew to adults were applied, like destroying their egg masses, and wrapping adhesive material around tree trunks to catch them as they climbed up. And sure enough, the following summer, there were far fewer of the lantern flies around. And the story died after that.

Ultimately, our media are crap, but they can scare people who don't think skeptically about what the media present.

When I think of our contemporary media-whatever the perceived editorial bent-I always think of John Vernon's great line from "The Outlaw Josey Wales": "Don't pi$$ down my back and tell me it's rainin'!"

Prost!

I'm still waiting on those killer bees from Mexico. I have about a thousand lantern flies on my front porch every morning. Half or more are dead. Not a pleasant sight. Thankful for the leave blower to give them a blast. These bad boys are tough, though. I give them full power and many manage to still hang onto something. They can also jump a couple feet in the air.

I think this shooting deserved the news coverage it got. It happened in midtown Manhattan, 4 people shot. A police officer was one. All totally innocent victims. It isn't the same as when 4 people in the hood get shot because someone "called them out of their name." For you folks that was a term I heard hundreds of times in North St louis meaning there was some verbal dispute between the parties. Speaking of North St Louis I don't know why the local news even reports a shooting that happened there. There is 1, 2 or 3 a day. It is bigger news if my mail is delivered late. But the phrase that drives me crazy is "they are food insecure" There is not one child in the USA that is laying there with a bloated stomach and flies landing on their face.

Your memories of your time in the police makes for interesting reading Gary.

I have heard the term food insecure a few times when viewing US msm talking about areas in US where Walmart etc have withdrawn from due to shoplifting, though Walmart etc have used a more PC terms covering a multitude of sins.

Politics and antisemitism Come into play when reporting the deaths in gaza, but totally ignoring the 50,000 children, UN figures, who have starved to death in Yemen in their ongoing war with Saudi in a single year.
But then, Saudi has oil.
