WW2 Revisionist History (2 Viewers)

Now y'all got me thinking, I am trying to figure out what the heck I am or rather my son is now. I am a Kraut, my wife is a Jew, so what is he, a Krew????? And Louis, does that make your little man a Wew???

WOW, look where this thread landed, ok, now that we have offended every ethnicity and political leaning, I think we are back on par and even keeled.

By the way, can you tell from my avatar that I live below the Mason Dixon and still believe in the cause...................JUST KIDDING, I admire General Forrest, I don't want to now be misconstrued as a bigot.

Ok, who can we bomb next and since this is in the Movies thread..............................."Do you remember when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor" Let's see who can finish the line and name the movie. :):p

I hope it is understood that any non politically correct references above we an attempt at humor and levity.

"Hell No" finishes the line and the movie-a bit like this thread has got "Animal House"

Chris,

What is it about my opinion in this post that so upset you? I am more than a little insulted by your post, and, while I am not as forthright as Harry about it, I really wonder what you were thinking.

Well, I take it you were able to read the ORIGINAL version of my forthright post Louis, before it was edited to the point where several of my observations no longer have the same meaning. I myself removed comments that I believed would be unacceptable before I posted my message. Maybe it did still contain close to the border comments such as; "Rant of Righteous Wrath".....guess thyat's why we have moderators here - to keep the peace.

Anyway, I am firmly on your's and Ron's side of the fence in this discussion and I myself was offended at what I saw as a personal attack not just on you two gentlemen, but also on all other members here who hold similar opinions.
What I was basically saying is that I see the world with a healthy dose of realism.
It's all very well for people living in relative comfort to get into a lather about perceived racism, and all the other 'isms. Or who have travelled and lived in a few different country's with a very considerable support structure looking after them to get on their high horse because they now think they've "seen the world". They ought to try it without that support infrastructure when interacting with less well off people living in other cultures, then they would see racism and all the rest in all its ugly shapes and forms.
BTW, I was called a "White Man" several times yesterday. Ought I have taken offense because this phrase was used by Africans? Why should I....they weren't using it in a derogatory sense.

Ivory Towers stuff right enough.

Cheers

Er sorry but what movie are we discussing here again?

Well it appears for some it sure aint "The Patriot" and for others "Dr Strangelove or How I stopped worrying and learned to love the Bomb" comes to mind as a good match:D:D

Oooooh - thought I was the Bad Lad around here....

The point is, even though a few contributers had opposite opinions, this thread was reasonably under control due to the fact that it was kept (mostly) to the level of a friendly discussion concerning complex issues. That's what made it such an interesting exchange of views.

And then it nose-dived.

Cheers

That would be the winner, I believe somewhere further on....."Don't stop him now, he's on a roll"......... Great movie.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread, good debate, all viewpoints present.

I didn't agree with all and I do believe one in particular was somewhat emotional and offensive, but everyone has a right to their beliefs.

Sorry this thread caused problems amongst some people. I guess the revisionists just upset me because I look at WW2 as a time when America, Britain ,Austrailia, Canada were 100% right and saved the world. My Dad fought in the war and I look back at fondness with that generation as the greatest in America's history. The country just seemed better back then. After the war we were an industrial giant. A place like Pittsburgh may have had sooty skies but the steel mills were going strong, the population was double what it is now and guys had good paying jobs. Today we make nothing in this country, if you work for corporate America your working harder and harder and never getting a raise that keeps up with rising prices. The culture is in the toilet. And it seems like we could never come together for a cause like we did in WW2. So when liberal pacifists or conservitives who still think the America First people were right try and say we were wrong in WW2 it just gets me fired up.

Sounds more and more like what I see happening in the UK.

Actually, immediately after Bluto asks that rhetorical question, the shot cuts to Otter and Boone sitting on the couch, Otter turns to Boone and asks, "Germans?", and Boone replies, "Forget it, he's on a roll"

"Seven years of college, down the drain!"

History will always be an interpretation of the past be it six seconds or 60 years ago. Personally I am all for revision of history taking into account new discoveries of old documents etc, that is just progress. After all there was a time when it was historical fact that everyone believed the world was flat.

However, none of the new interpretations have any real bearing on what the Allied servicemen did during WWII because when you look at the options during the course of the war there is very little that could have been done different given what they had and what they knew for SURE.

For example, if the two atom bombs were NOT dropped. How would YOU explain to the relatives of the allied servicemen that would have died that we had this device that would surely have saved their lives. But hey, we decided NOT to use it, sorry about that.

And BTW, I have it on good authority from people who were at the sharp end that there isn't much glory in war, it's just a dirty business. And sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

My son is a Pizza-Bagel with Hagis as a topping . . .:D

The line is "Did we give up when the German's bombed Pearl harbor?" It is John Belishi as [later Senator] "Bluto" Blutarski in Animal House! :p:D;)

You could always do what Portugal did during the war-Stay out of the scrap:D:D

Problem is I love these friendly scraps ( not bigger ones, my life is already filled with legal scraps ):D.
Salazar, Portugal's ruler at the time, may have been a fascist but he was wise enough to walk a tightrope between the Axis and Britain and keep us out of the war:D. This made Lisbon a great city for spies from both sides:D. But my parents always told me that there were great cellebrations in Lisbon on VE day.
