They actually shot him seven times in the back while he was trying to get into his car. Even if the guy were reaching for a knife - and I've heard no evidence of such - the police already had their guns drawn on him. Why not traser the guy instead of unloading a full clip in his back? I don't discount the risks of being a police officer and having to make split second decisions but it is simply not acceptable to shoot an unarmed man in the back multiple times. If any ordinary citizen did that, they would be arrested on the spot. There would be probable cause for an arrest at the scene and an investigation would then be made as to whether to prosecute. For some unknown reason, when the police are involved it takes weeks to make an arrest decision. And during that period of uncertainty, there is trouble.
Just for the record and not picking sides:
The Kenosha, Wis., police union issued a statement Friday on the police shooting of Jacob Blake, an incident last Sunday that sparked protests and rioting in the city....
The police union statement said that most accounts of the shooting were "wholly inaccurate" and "purely fictional,” Kenosha news reported.
In Sunday's incident, Blake was "armed with a knife" and "forcefully fought" with officers, putting one of them in a headlock, Brendan Matthews, an attorney for the Kenosha Professional Police Association, said Friday, according to Kenosha News.
“The purely fictional depiction of events coming from those without direct knowledge of what actually occurred is incredibly harmful, and provides no benefit to anyone whatsoever, other than to perpetuate a misleading narrative,” Matthews stated.
Matthews said officers first tried unsuccessfully to subdue Blake with stun guns.
“Mr. Blake was not unarmed. He was armed with a knife. The officers did not see the knife initially. The officers issued repeated commands for Mr. Blake to drop the knife. He did not comply.”
I'm not saying the man deserved to be shot, but often in these instances it seems like there is more to the story than we are initially given by the media, and that is really irresponsible, especially in such volatile times. It also seems that these dreaded occurrences are often elevated by someone who will not listen to clear commands by the police. The media complex is often not very forthcoming with contextual information that is relevant, and seems to just want to pour gas on the flames.
