Similar situation in Australia, and they practically doubled the unemployment benefits to about AUD $1,200 per fortnight. How does Covid19 affect people that were Unemployed Before the Virus?

Lets face it OZ the authorities are throwing money around like its confetti.

Its going to be fun when future generations have to pay it all back and get taxed to death to do so.

So you still can't nip out and get a haircut yet in the US? Or is that only in some states?

From what we've seen on the news here this week about the US, it seems like everyone is protesting something over there?

I'm going to have a protest protesting the number or protests.

Some is legit, some is paid to create chaos.

Well I'm going to start protesting why this thread keeps showing up in the ''General Toy Soldier Discussion'' section.
And if Marco can find a group to pay me to do it, I'll happily take their money.

Yes it's just crazy the amount of money being thrown around. I can understand payments for a few months to certain people that lost their jobs because of the virus. However it's not something any government can afford in the longer term.

I know so many folks who have lost their jobs and businesses which have closed due to our lockdown here in NZ. We're currently going through a second lockdown phase and have 130x Covid positive cases, most of which will recover and go on to live their lives without any lasting problems.

Its just not practical to keep locking the country down. This is a virus which will keep mutating and keep spreading like the common cold.

Mark, can't believe some of the stuff being reported over here. I see a dark skinned bloke gets shot by US police, but no one wants to point out he reportedly was reaching for a knife! This whole BLM thing is a beat up by the media.

When are they going to show how many cops are shot or injured on the job??

This race thing is spreading even down here.

The worlds gone bonkers.

I don't want to get too political here but the media doesn't help. They are helping to fuel the hatred.

They actually shot him seven times in the back while he was trying to get into his car. Even if the guy were reaching for a knife - and I've heard no evidence of such - the police already had their guns drawn on him. Why not traser the guy instead of unloading a full clip in his back? I don't discount the risks of being a police officer and having to make split second decisions but it is simply not acceptable to shoot an unarmed man in the back multiple times. If any ordinary citizen did that, they would be arrested on the spot. There would be probable cause for an arrest at the scene and an investigation would then be made as to whether to prosecute. For some unknown reason, when the police are involved it takes weeks to make an arrest decision. And during that period of uncertainty, there is trouble.

Well said! I have worked with many great police officers in the PBC and PAL who work with minority communities. But there needs to be better training, more psychological profiling and impartial oversight. Its a very challenging job but its a choice unlike being drafted into the army so if you can't live up to the standards of fair policing don't apply.

Yes, some of the media exacerbates the problems with one sided coverage but without getting "political" there is plenty of other
blame to go around with fueling hatred.

I'm not condoning what happened to this man, but just like the George Floyd incident there's always more going on than what was originally reported and as so often the case, the media are very quick with their assumptions and report them as facts.

If you watch the body cam footage of the Floyd matter and then read the autopsy you get a very different perceptive to what was originally reported.

Trial by media is a very dangerous thing and occurs far more often these days than ever before.

What concerns me the most is how easy it is to manipulate the news and turn opinion into fact before a matter has been thoroughly investigated.

The public have developed this over-whelming hunger for instant answers in these troubled times and it seems to me the media are more than happy to fuel the flames with little regard for the actual truth or the facts.

The consequences for those involved can be devastating, but the media are rarely held to account for their mis-representation or distortion of the news and a growing number of the public seem oblivious or simply don't care to what is actually going on.

Just for the record and not picking sides:

The Kenosha, Wis., police union issued a statement Friday on the police shooting of Jacob Blake, an incident last Sunday that sparked protests and rioting in the city....
The police union statement said that most accounts of the shooting were "wholly inaccurate" and "purely fictional,” Kenosha news reported.
In Sunday's incident, Blake was "armed with a knife" and "forcefully fought" with officers, putting one of them in a headlock, Brendan Matthews, an attorney for the Kenosha Professional Police Association, said Friday, according to Kenosha News.
“The purely fictional depiction of events coming from those without direct knowledge of what actually occurred is incredibly harmful, and provides no benefit to anyone whatsoever, other than to perpetuate a misleading narrative,” Matthews stated.
Matthews said officers first tried unsuccessfully to subdue Blake with stun guns.
“Mr. Blake was not unarmed. He was armed with a knife. The officers did not see the knife initially. The officers issued repeated commands for Mr. Blake to drop the knife. He did not comply.”

I'm not saying the man deserved to be shot, but often in these instances it seems like there is more to the story than we are initially given by the media, and that is really irresponsible, especially in such volatile times. It also seems that these dreaded occurrences are often elevated by someone who will not listen to clear commands by the police. The media complex is often not very forthcoming with contextual information that is relevant, and seems to just want to pour gas on the flames.

Where is the body cam footage?
Hard to justify shooting someone in the back seven times at point blanc range........do the police ever admit a mistake? There is a problem with oversight because of the Union and the "Blue Wall" and Ive heard this from cops and DA's.
Lets see the evidence and then decide.

I agree, but we don't have all the facts. Yes, the police do admit mistakes. Officers get terminated/prosecuted for their mistakes, but perhaps the "blue wall" you mentioned keeps that number at a minimum. I really don't know. I just get frustrated how the media portrays things sometimes when they really need to select their words carefully, especially when all the facts aren't out there. They generally appear to aim to inflame, and it is very dangerous.

The turn of this thread to the shooting in Kenosha was inevitable. Like all things related to the Vid it eventually turns sour.

So I’ll throw this in before it gets shut down:

The constant guessing, second guessing and analysis seems to undermine one of the greatest aspects of American law, we are ALL innocent until proven guilty. All too often we judge too early and draw conclusions based on minimal information.

Kenosha PD do not wear body cameras.

How about some positive news? The NY Times is quietly reported that new virus cases are down 20% in the last two week and deaths are down 15%. And the stock market hit record highs this week.

Massachusetts has a no indoor gatherings of over 50 people allowed rule in place; Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine, to our south and north, apparently do not.

So what are these brain surgeons doing; they are going to those states for bachelor parties and weddings.

Over the past week, a bachelor party in Rhode Island attended by 60 had 60 cases of COIVD break out, a wedding in New Hampshire led to 200 infections and a wedding in Maine has led to about 60 infections, not a mask in sight.

What is wrong with people; the human species cannot be this stupid.

My mothers next door neighbor has a grandson who's getting married in New Hampshire; he and his wife declined the invitation, his daughter is upset they are not going...........his reply "She's going to have to learn to live with the disappointment".........................
